Agreed. Power to anyone who wants surprise porn intermixed with their memes and tech news, but I’d like the choice to keep that separate without blocking all NSFW content.
i hadnt really thought of it until now, and was kind of expecting lemmy/kbin to get infected with porn, but you state some great reasons. i want to be open that i have used porn subs in the past, and i think that porn should 100% be legal. every adult should have the right to express themselves as long as they are not infringing on someone else's rights or safety.
before onlyfans, /r/gonewild was actually pretty appealing. once the amateur porn scene took off, reddit porn subs became advertisements ("check the comments for my onlyfans 😜🍑") and spam bots reposting other people's porn. i really would prefer to avoid that. if someone wants porn, they can go back to reddit or whatever porn dedicated site there is.
btw, i knew a girl who ran one of her own onlyfans-type things. i know it's annecdotal so my one experience isn't representative, but she ruined it for me. that girl was complete trash. she still lived with her parents at 24 years old with no ambition other than to live off of others. she proudly stated this. she didn't work. she had multiple sugar daddies that would financially support her while she would insult them and her customers behind their backs openly to anyone that would listen to her garbage. she had multiple separate ig accounts, each dedicated to a sugar daddy. she would then friend her real friends to show off the "losers" that would support her. the rest of her sisters, while not as bad, were near the same level of toxicity: highly predatory, psychopathically manipulative, and vindictive af. they shared the same social circle that was all the same crap. i fully expect to see at least one of them in the news or jail blotter eventually. i ended up blocking them all on all avenues of communication and recorded me on video telling them that they arent allowed on my property. i also created a highly detailed journal of our interactions, recorded conversations, and kept evidence in case they ever felt like attacking me for setting boundaries.
anyway, in my experience, the persona we see them display on the internet is fake. they're not some horny person just dying for some internet stranger to hook up with. theyre not a victim of the circumstances theyre trying to escape. they don't get turned on by being "slutty" just for you. they get turned on by the power to manipulate others at other's expense. that their real kink: abuse. it becomes disgusting.
again, i know not all online sex workers are this way, and there are certainly the fantastical pornstars and couple's that aren't terrible people but some definitely are horrible and we dont actually know which one is which because the public gets a false presentation of who they really are.
thanks for attending my ted talk. ill have a spicy chicken sandwich pls.

@Marv IMO we need some NSFW instances. It wouldn’t be a problem with the rest of lemmy/kbin because it’s easy to filter out communities/magazine or entire instances.
There is a legitimate demand for NSFW content. And NSFW content can be a decisive factor in the success of a platform. (See Tumblr vs Twitter, photographs on instagram, etc.) Sex workers are also a vulnerable group and one of the goals of the fediverse is to provide a place for marginalized groups.
@Marv
BUT, it needs moderation and moderating NSFW is hard, exhausting and time-consuming. Not everyone wants to do that. Also when I say NSFW content, it doesn’t have to be porn bot posting content they don’t own. It could be OC only, a photograph community that allows nude models, etc. Unlike porn dumps communities, those are important places to have.
Edit: Also research the history of switter, it’s very interesting. And one of the big failures of the fediverse. We should learn from it.
The porn would be on it's own instance not federated with the common Lemmy servers. So it wouldn't show up in /all.
Those who want porn would have to actively seek it out by connecting to those instances. More over, if one instance starts allowing unacceptable material, the other instances can blacklist it.
So far Reddit seems to have avoided getting into a lot of trouble by not really hosting images itself much (this is changing, as is imgur's policies) and by being mostly NOT for it so it doesn't get noticed. Making an instance for the purpose invites a ton of scrutiny and liability that few people want to deal with. That said nothing's stopping anyone from spinning up their own instance.
Seems completely unnecessary since there are many porn sites online already. Also it would take quite a lot of server resources since it's all images and video.
The point of Reddit, and now Lemmy by extension, is a sort of link aggregator + comments. As with all content: sure, general sites all exist for that porn, but sometimes if you want more specific categories it's a lot easier to have community collected content that is sorted.
If someone wishes to spin up an instance for it, so be it. You are welcome to ignore it and not federate with it. That's the point of the fediverse.
The question isn't "do we want Reddit users who want porn here?", but rather "do we want Reddit users who see no value in a space unless it's full of porn?".
There should absolute be spaces for sex workers, both online and in meatspace, but maybe the produce aisle still has value even if it's not surrounded by strippers. And maybe. People want to buy produce sometimes without seeing said strippers.
Now, whether there should be instances that are all sex workers or not is a different, and complicated, question. Sex work is often criminalized, and even the legal forms of it are highly scrutinized. Putting them all in a confined space makes it really easy for authorities who are looking to send a message to unilaterally shut down their infrastructure. We've seen it on the Fediverse before. They need some kind of smoke screen in order to be protected from the Delores Umbridges of the world. But that doesn't mean people who are unable or unwilling to handle the added stress and responsibility needtl to be the ones doing the screening.
Mastodon was for a while flooded by p0rn and hentai with some very edgy content. That was ridiculous. It was a reason why I left mastodon in the beginning.
My salutations to @nutomic and others mods, that's a crazy idea to provide an open access platform.
When you say "this site", do you mean lemmy in general, or lemmy.ml(your home instance)? Because lemmy in general DOES allow nsfw content, its just that no one (to my current knowledge) had been willing to start+moderate a NSFW instance yet. If you think you are up to it, you are more than welcome to spin up your own instance. Just remember you still have to follow all the laws regarding server hosting where you live(or where the server is hosted maybe? Idk I'm not a lawyer).
Thanks for the response. Still learning how lemmy works. I just followed a link I was sent thinking it was lemmy in general and not just this instance.
all good dude, it's easy to get that confused. lemmy.ml is actually just one of a number of websites that make up lemmy and the fediverse at large. while you interact as a user almost exclusively through your home instance, much of the content you can access is actually hosted on a different website, even though you still access it through your home instance, think if it like email in that sense. even if you don't have a gmail.com email address you can stil send and receive emails to people who do. that's why my full handle is @[email protected], yours is @[email protected], and we are communicating with each other on a public form via the individual websites our accounts are hosted on. If you have ever used or plan to use mastodon, that works the same way and actually uses the same protocol (activitypub), there are also other currently less popular social media alternatives that use this protocol as well as speculation that it may be added into some mainstream social media platforms(though I wouldn't hold my breath on them federating with lemmy/mastodon). If you ever join a smaller instance (which I and the devs recommend to help the network scale better), you can use this link to find communities on other instances(they won't show up on your home instance if no one is subscribed to them or they are blocked by your instance): https://browse.feddit.de/
I'm just going to take your response literally, because I honestly can't tell if you're joking or not. when you join a lemmy instance, in OPs case, lemmy.ml, or in your case, lemmy.world. your profile is hosted on said instance, and therefore anything you put on your profile is subject to the rules of whoever owns/moderates that instance. if you don't like it, move to another instance, or start your own, that's the benefit of a federated system!
There is one now, there wasn't when I wrote that comment like 2 weeks ago lol. The nsfw part of reddit seems to be embracing lemmy pretty quickly now that its up.
Because that would end up making a good portion of potential users feel uncomfortable using the site. There is no lack of pornography on the Internet, go look at it elsewhere.
A great question, porn/sexuality is a great deal for many users (me, included) and Reddit tried to make them go away or at least hide them; I have no idea why is it not allowed in so many Lemmy instances (if not all of them) but I hope that changes in the not so far future, otherwise we're going to be missing one of the biggest reasons people use Reddit and might not move to a Lemmy instance.
I have no idea what kind of person wants to do that sort of thing, but they do exist.
Perhaps we should send PMs to all the porn subreddit mods and ask them if they'd be interested in moderating a porn reddit on lemmy?
I'd be curious to know which porn subreddits are scheduled to go dark on the 12th. Are there any reddit porn connoisseurs here that can do that research and let us know which subreddits mods might be upset at reddit and interested in migrating here?
So we need two lists:
List of porn subreddits with upset mods
List of lemmy instances that would be down to host some porn communities
because this is lemmy.ml , if you want porn go to one of the nsfw friendly instances like lemmy.burger.rodeo (but I think you need to be logged in for nsfw communities to show up)
Exactly. Is it too much to ask to see consensual picture shared by age appropriate people on their own volition? I guess this is why we can't have nice things.
Personally, I don't see why we'd want to bring erotica to Lemmy.
There's already an abundance to be found on other platforms. Why load moderators with the tasks of filtering porn? If one must watch porn so desperately -- why not go to porn sites? I don't see the point.
I find it better to use my imagination anyway. Not thinking any less of people who want to watch porn, you do you, but I find the industry itself rather appalling. In the end, I don't see why we'd want to bring all trouble porn entails here.
Many of us do not want porn, so it only makes sense that porn goes into specific instances that people who do not want porn can block out. It's a freedom of choice thing.
You know you can just join an instance in another country right? :)
I don't go for porn either but just realize what makes this platform awesome. You can join any instance in any part of the world or set up your own and contribute to all discussions from your own.
while i don't necessarily disagree that porn can destroy the meaning of sex and wreck one's brain, i really would prefer the state stay out of my business. i think a better approach would be to provide education on how porn affects us and avenues to seek help should someone fall into an addiction. however, getting the state involved on what people can and cannot say is too much control for my comfort.
I understand your POV but porn is as bad as hard drugs (because it is). We clearly can't regulate it given how many children get sucked into it.
So letting government block this isn't the same as government overstepping into other spheres of freedom.
Excessive freedom that hurts our species isn't "freedom" but a hidden addictive trap that hurts us on a multi-generational level.
