PSA: the OpenStreetMap-community has arrived to Lemmy as well

HI all,

Sorry for spamming, but seeing that the other OSM-post got quite some traction, I wanted to point out that the OSM-community here is coming to life as well.

You can post your beginner questions into the newbie friday thread or brag about your mapping projects into the showoff sunday thread

At last, please post OSM-related content over there! We need to get this party started...

All hail OSM!!!

OSMAnd has literally saved my life when my Garmin died and my hiking buddy's phone also died and I remembered I had saved off-line maps for the state we were in and could traveling-salesman our way out of the mountains safely.
- OSMAnd is pretty nice, but Organic Maps is just way better IMHO.
  
  Better how? I've only played around with OSMand a little but it seems very full of features and options.
  
  I can never get search to work. I can find addresses on the map, but when I type them in nothing comes up.

Yesterday I've seen the other thread, curiosity got the best of me so I registered in openstreetmap and in Organic Maps I've added a missing cafe and a restaurant in my area. Fascinating!

You can help map roads, buildings and other features for disaster zones and other areas in urgent need of accurate mapping.
Is there a good user guide for osmand? Iwant to use it but it seems WAY too difficult
- What are you trying to use it for? If you just need basic mapping, you might look at Organic Maps.
  
  My primary use is driving directions. I've used organic maps, I'll try that again.

- It took me a long time to learn it, but once I did, it is an incredible mapping app that is so customizable. While you are getting used to it, Organic Maps is great and really intuitive. Just slightly basic for my needs.
I've purchased OSMAnd on Android and I love it. But would like to try out Organic Maps.

I wonder: Is there a way to share the maps between the two? Or am I forced to keep both copies?
- No. Both package the same OSM-data, but they use a different binary format.
  
  That's a shame! Maybe there's a place for an "OSMService", serving maps to apps.
