It is better than I remember. The visual effects are far better than should have been possible for the time. The story is exquisite. As I watched it all I could think was "For Democracy!'
The visual effects are still good for the same reason the visual effects on the OG Jurassic Park are still good: they knew when to use CGI and when to use practical effects.
Paul Verhoeven also did Robocop and Total Recall before this movie. Regrettably he hasn't done anything as good, since.

I did the same thing! A friend of mine mentioned that the movie had a huge uptick in streaming recently due to Helldivers 2. I don't know where he got that info from, but I'd believe it.
I did the same and had the added bonus of getting my wife to watch it for the first time. And then I went diving after and it was just... Right.
