How can I unmod a user?
Hello, I need to remove a user from the moderation of my community, but I can't find a button to do this. I went to a post they made, clicked on the three dots, and the only options I got are: create report, block user, lock and feature in community.

Upgrade Lemmy.world to 0.19.5
Just wondering when do you think it'll be possible to upgrade Lemmy.world to 0.19.5. Just curious since I know that 0.19.5 comes with many nice improvements including the ability to delete your own image uploads. As well as many bug fixes.

Is it possible to unblock a VPN dedicated IP?
Seems like my VPN has been targeted for blocking by this instance which I appreciate is a security thing and prevents BS accounts from taking over the platform.
However I hold a dedicated IP with said VPN, so is it possible to unblock just my dedicated IP?

broken images
Hello,
Using the default web UI, sometimes post images don't load, both for local and federated posts.
One example: https://lemmy.world/post/20205083
Looking at the console, the requests to both the thumbnail and the main image fail with a 500: https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/45cab39c-d212-4581-bb8f-f9276e631531.gif?format=webp&thumbnail=256 https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/45cab39c-d212-4581-bb8f-f9276e631531.gif?format=webp
The response body for both contains:
{"code":"panic","msg":"Panic in blocking operation"}
Removing both parameters,
format
andthumbnail
, returns the correct media.Am I doing something wrong?

Not being able to see any content in a community
Hey there.
So the most recent issue I've experienced has been being unable to see any (new or old) posts on [email protected]. It's a community that I started, in case that somehow affects anything. I'm accessing Lemmy via Edge browser with ad-blocker disabled for Lemmy.World.
I'm very puzzled as to why I haven't been able to see anything for about a week. I checked again today to see if it was a view filter issue. So I tried all of the view filters for the community and nothing changed. I even opened up community settings to see if something had become activated/deactivated. There seems to be nothing related.
So what's going on and how could I resolve this issue?

Cannot stay logged in on desktop
Since a few weeks ago, Lemmy.world will always log me out when I leave it, and I cannot find a "stay logged-in" tick-box anywhere in the settings. Is this a bug or a feature or perhaps a "me-problem"?
Happens with Firefox and Vivaldi on Linux, if that matters. Emptying cache/cookies did not help. Mobile app is fine.
Thanks for any hint!
ETA, thanks to @[email protected], there is a temporary workaround to this: > I could set the lemmy.world cookie to โlaxโ using a cookie manager extension. Now it seems to work, both with F5 and when I leave Firefox.

Fallout New Vegas Community
Hello, I was wondering if I could be added as a moderator to the Fallout New Vegas community. The only original mod, Lukjam, appears to have been inactive for the past year. I tried to reach out to them directly through DMs two weeks ago, but I have not heard back. I really want to make sure this community keeps going, but I think that will be difficult if there are no active moderators. Let me know if there is anything you need from me.

Ban the MBFC bot
This bot is spreading misinformation.
This bot is spreading rightwing propaganda.
This bot is spamming every post.
This bot is consistently downvoted.
This bot degrades the user experience.
Please ban it.

old.lemmy.world 503
old.lemmy.world has been very slow all day and is now 503'ing continuously, lemmy instance health doesn't seem to cover old.lemmy.world, only the main instance, which seems to be working fine.

Starting guide needs update
The link to https://browse.feddit.de/ is dead and should be updated to https://lemmyverse.net/communities.
Personally i think it would even make sense to link this from the main site sidebar. Not because it is a problem finding communities on other instances from within world, at least this should be the best instance to be able to, but as a function of being a "role model" for other instances.

Top level comments sometimes end up as a reply to another random comment
I'm not sure if this is a Lemmy issue, an instance issue or a Jerboa issue but occasionally when I hit the button to reply specifically to the main post and make a top-level comment, it instead replies to one of the already existing top level comments.
I don't know how long this has been happening; I only just now noticed it wasn't me accidentally clicking the wrong reply button when it happened twice in a row and I was making absolute sure I hit the right button the second time.

no downvoting for specific communities? - SOLVED
I've recently noticed that downvotes don't stick for the community [email protected].
Bug or design choice? Is there a work around? My account is with lemmy.world - do I need to log into a different instance to have full downvote capability?
SOLVED - they banned me for downvoting their fascist frogs

Political Memes Unfair Moderation Polict
Lemmy political Memes only seems to care about ignoring genocide and punishing those calling out uncivil accounts. Also more interested in banning those they don't like then locking posts due to reporting then actually moderating posts.
Mods log.
https://lemmy.world/modlog/1384
Examples of terrible removals and bans
And they leave up comments with baseless accusations

Unstickied post in c/[email protected] still stickied on world
Apparently the unsticking of this post in the [email protected] community did not federate and should be unstickied on world's end.

Mods of !news are now banning people for criticizing the MBFC bot?
I got banned earlier today with the message "rule 1", no other information about why, or which comment broke the rule. As far as I can tell it was this one, which just says "We want the bot gone. Thatโs it. Itโs really that simple."
So I checked the modlog for other bans, and @[email protected] was banned today as well, also just for "rule 1", probably either for the comment saying "a stupid bot writing useless bullshit" or "This is what you call "Not listening to criticism."", neither of which are an attack on any person.
(Also earlier today @[email protected] was banned with the message "fuck off", which I'm pretty sure is not a reason to ban someone from a major community, but doesn't appear to be related to the MBFC bot.)
One more today, @[email protected] was banned, again just "rule 1", last comment being this one, again not an attack on any person.
So what's the deal here? I couldn't find any rules for mods on lemmy.world with a brief poke around, but are we letting mods run major communities like little fiefdoms, banning people for criticism?

When I Post using video's URL like YouTube's, the leftside square Thumbnail is always the generic one?
Hello. When I Post by putting the video's URL, say from YouTube, the leftside square thumbnail preview is always the generic one provided by Lemmy World, the one with the the link arrow in the middle. So I simply put the URL of the thumbnail instead (eg. maxresdefault, sddefault, etc.) It's been like such since I joined.
Then just lately, I found out existing Posts in other YouTube-related Communities, the leftside square preview thumbnails do in fact show, and with the link arrow on the top-right corner instead. And I think the Body automatically inherits the existing Title and Description from the YouTube video. Both
youtu.be
andwww.youtube.com
video links work in those Communities.Examples of YouTube-related Communities with showing Thumbnails are:
- c/youtubehaiku
- c/youtube
Here is my latest Post as example (which I have never edited yet), and I posted it via a raw Chromium profile, so no add-ons at all if they would interfere just in case:https:\/\/lemmy.world\/post\/19226604
Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm not sure how this happened or if it's a problem, but the community [email protected] has no moderators listed in its sidebar
Maybe the mod(s) got banned by admins? Doesn't seem to be too active thankfully, but it's probably only a matter of time before moderation will be needed there.

Please allow VPNs
Honestly, in this day and age I consider VPN a basic internet hygiene. There are many many reasons to not trust your ISP and the wire between your home and ISP. You have moderation here, why do you even need to block VPN? I registered this account from VPN, but I somehow cannot comment from VPN? Doesn't make much sense. I'm using paid Proton VPN servers, and btw I've seen Proton having a dedicated community here on this platform.

Asking for [email protected] to be locked

Could you please lock down [email protected] ?
Also, it seems like the creator has a lot of communities https://lemmy.world/u/comcreator
None of them have had any post since at least 4 months.

Asking for [email protected] to be locked
No active mod, last real post was 9 months ago.

Display picture of one of my posts in Koalawalla Woods is again going 404, even after updating it to try to fix it.
I'm not sure what is going on now, but the image on the same post has gone to 404 again with the following message, and I'm wondering if this is a false flag to be looked into.
code "not-found" msg 'Invalid status 404 Not Found for Some("01/91/67/bd/82/19/7f/c6/a9/5c/0a385494f4e7.webp") - <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>\n<Error> <Code>NoSuchKey</Code><Message>The specified key does not exist.</Message><Key>01/91/67/bd/82/19/7f/c6/a9/5c/0a385494f4e7.webp</Key> <RequestId>95E0597B8123B6BB:B</RequestId><HostId>cW87R9FPpdPoU+Pzi/Qq+hqAKrlMYTFknX5U9FA/5ufaGNYc3u0FOwytmiH8S3pjHLd6Q6etLoxL</HostId> <CMReferenceId>MTcyNDcxMjk0MzYzOSAxNTQuNDkuMjE1LjEwMyBDb25JRDo0MjY0MzI1MzIvRW5naW5lQ29uSUQ6NDEwNzg2Ny9Db3JlOjY3</CMReferenceId></Error>'

I recently just noticed that one of my posts, the one to a petition on Care2, had its display picture from the petition itself get deleted as it was coming up as 404. I have changed it to a direct link to the image on Dingo for now while I'm wondering why I wasn't even notified of the reason why it was removed.
Edit: Now it looks like it is 404 here as well.

/Politics starts banning any mention of the Democrats complicity in the Genocide in Gaza
With the elections nearing and the Biden-Harris administration still being complicit in Genocide there is but one way for crocodile tear liberals to fix the issue: Start banning anyone who comments about the Biden administration being complicit in Genocide.
/Politics mod JordanLund who also mods /WorldNews decides Biden has nothing to do with the Genocide in Gaza
JordanLund banned users in the past for questioning israel's right to exist. JordanLund now takes it one step further and is now spreading misinformation about israel not running out of weapons without American support so Biden and Harris are "not complicit in Genocide":
I link him a guardian article proving he is lying (JordanLund has deleted my comment which just quoted a Guardian article debunking his lies):
> Biden must force Israel to end the war
> Recent reports in the Israeli press make clear that because of a global shortage of ammunition that started with the Ukraine war, Israel would not be able to sustain its bombardment of Gaza without the US resupplying the Israeli military.
JordanLund responds by calling TheGuardian misinformation, promptly bans me and says he supports the "rightful defense of israel".
He also piles on more lies and claims the only weapons being sent by Biden are Interceptor missiles which are "misappropriated by israel for the use in Genocide"?
> Reuters Exclusive: US has sent Israel thousands of 2,000-pound bombs since Oct. 7
> Between the war's start last October and recent days, the United States has transferred at least 14,000 of the MK-84 2,000-pound bombs
Lemmy.World has reached /Politics and /WorldNews communities which differ little from their Reddit counterpart.

banned from political memes with no recourse available
After being left on read by the mods this is the next step in my attempt in getting clarification on how my comment could be read as 'racist', the cited ban reason.
Context:
This comment: https://lemmy.world/comment/11028531 which was (posted exactly as it was): *** readsettlers.org
CW for genocidal racism
> "I can hardly believe that the South and North can live in peace unless we get rid of the Negroes. Certainly they cannot, if we don't get rid of the Negroes whom we have armed and disciplined and who have fought with us, I believe, to the amount of 150,000 men. I believe it would be better to export them all..." - Abraham Lincoln https://archive.org/details/autobiographyper0192butl page 903
***
This comment was removed as 'racist'. See the modlog https://lemmy.world/modlog?page=1&userId=199626
Attempts at getting clarification:
Seeing no official appeal process I messaged the first mod on the list that had activity in the last couple days. Here is the message I sent @[email protected] on 07 Jul: *** Hi,
this is about my ban from Political Memes on lemmy.world . I donโt see an official appeal process nor the mod who banned me so I am messaging you rather randomly. Sorry if I oveelooked something.
I am not sure how my comment was racist when Pugjesus is the one dismissing black voices with a โlol stop being melodramaticโ. Fairly certain there is a misunderstanding which I hope to rectify.
Thanks
mathemachristian *** after receiving no response, this is the message I sent to the next mod with some activity on the mod list @[email protected] on 17 Jul : *** Hi,
this is about my ban from [email protected]. I donโt see an official appeal process nor the mod who banned me which is why I see no alternative to DMโing you directly. Sorry if I overlooked something. I also messaged Rooki over a week ago but never got a reply.
I am not sure how my comment can be seen as racist. Iโm hoping to clarify what surely is just a misunderstaning.
Thanks *** They at least promptly replied 2.5h later with: *** I havenโt taking any mod actions on your account but I will ask around. *** My "Appreciate it" was the last communication between me and anyone on the mod team.
Why I care
I am hoping to at least get an explanation on how my comment could be read as racist, because to me this seems like a willful misunderstanding at best (I am quoting Lincoln, those are not my words or views, as should be obvious from the CW I applied to it). Especially with no mod actions taken against the person replying to me linking readsettlers.org with a dismissal of the author, who has been very active in black liberation (though themself not black, that was a mistake in my first message), as "melodramatic".

Asking for moderator Rooki's removal for misconduct
In my view as a long-time moderator, the purpose of moderation is conflict resolution and ensuring the sitewide rules are followed. As reported today by !vegan@lemmyworld, moderator Rooki's vision appears to be that their personal disagreement with someone else's position takes priority over the rules and is enough to remove comments in a community they don't moderate, remove its moderators for the comments, and effectively resort to hostile takeover by posting their own comment with an opposing view (archived here) and elevating it for visiblity.
The removed comments relate to vegan cat food. As seen in the modlog, Rooki removed a number of pretty balanced comments explaining that while there are problematic ways to feed cats vegan, if done properly, cats can live on vegan cat food. Though it is a controversial position even among vegans, there is scientific research supporting it, like this review from 2023 or the papers co-authored by professor Andrew Knight. These short videos could also work as a TL;DR of his knowledge on the matter. As noted on Wikipedia, some of the biggest animal advocacy organizations support the notion of vegan cat food, while others do not. Vegan pet food brands, including Ami, Evolution Diet, and Benevo have existed for years and are available throughout the world, clearly not prohibited by law in countries with laws against animal abuse.
To summarize, even if you don't agree with the position of vegan cat food being feasible, at the very least you have to acknowledge that the matter is not clear-cut. Moreover, there is no rule of lemmy.world that prohibits those types of conversations unless making a huge stretch to claim that it falls under violent content "promoting animal abuse" in the context of "excessive gore" and "dismemberment".
For the sake of the argument, even if we assume that the truth is fully on Rooki's side and discussions of vegan cat food is "being a troll and promoting killing pets", the sitewide rules would have to be updated to reflect this view, and create a dangerous precedent, enabling banning for making positive comments about junk food (killing yourself), being parents who smoke (killing your kids), being religious "because it's not scientific" and so on. Even reddit wouldn't go that far, and there are plenty of conversations on vegan cat food on reddit.
Given Rooki's behavior and that it has already resulted in forcing the vegan community out of lemmy.world and with more likely to follow, I believe the only right course of action is to remove them as a moderator to help restore the community's trust in the platform and reduce the likelihood of similar events in the future.

The sorting algorithm ("hot") does not favor new posts. It's keeping two 1-hour-old posts below posts that are 6-days-old
In case people might get the wrong idea, I only post pics/clips of female martial artists who who have given me their permission. I do not steal content from Instagram.

Is there an update schedule somewhere?
I'm wondering if there are any plans to upgrade to a newer version of lemmy. There was a change made a few months ago to have saved posts sort by the saved timestamp so that it will be chronological based on when things were saved instead of whatever it does right now. I tried looking around at the mastadon account and a brief search on lemmy.world but I'm not seeing anything that indicates when the next update might take place or what versions it will include.
