  • My great grandmothers were: Lola, Layla, Eula, Lulua. For real. They were born around 1900.

We have a cat named Lulu.

  • Basic American etiquette
  • I carry a LCP, (subcompact .380). I practice two hand, right hand, left hand. I also always try and shoot a magazine or two with sunglasses on at an indoor range to simulate low light conditions.

It has like a three inch barrel, so it's not the most accurate or easy to aim. I only shoot it at seven yards.

It's nasty to shoot, lot of kick. I call it the Angry Cricket. Trigger pull is heavy as it is a double action with no safety. I carry it with one in the pipe.

Hope I never have to use it, but if I do, I will be as accurate as possible. That's the ethical thing to do as I see it.

  • Nature is beautiful
  • This is so stupid. It cracked me the fuck up. The kid and I are sitting giggling like a couple of morons.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • Thank you for the advice.

We haven't had much time this year, so far, to go. Went to Lake Ouchita in Arkansas for the eclipse. Carried 200lbs of gear or so and used my boy's old sit on top child-size kayak for cargo.

Glad there are bluegill, we eat some pretty small ones so maybe it will be alright. Big cats will make my wife and myself happy.

Believe it or not, Alabama has a lot of clean rivers and I'm not used to worrying about pollution. There are some areas of the Tennessee River where it is a concern but that's big water and we haven't gone there. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the heads up.

Water moccasins aren't a problem, used to them, there's a 10' gator in one of my favorite ponds.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • Yeah, they do have inspections and that is probably what does it.

Atlanta is great, culture wise, but fuck driving in that abomination. Peach Tree!

Huntsville was our more progressive city, but it has really changed, and not in a good way.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • Thanks! Our former neighbor ran a meth lab for years, can't be much worse than that.

Kayak questions, if you don't mind.

My son and I like to go kayak camping and fishing. We have big old sit on top Lifetime fishing kayaks. We don't do rough water or big rapids. I think level I/II is our thing.

Where should we go in the south west part of the state?

I fish for bream and catfish. Not into sport fishing, don't care about bass. Eat what I catch. Was into fly fishing when I was younger but got over that sickness.

What should I fish for and what sort of tackle?

    Thanks!

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • $165,000. Pictures were awful, and it has poor curb appeal due to asphalt shingle siding. However, the asbestos in the shingles mean it will last forever and it has hardwood floors throughout.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • A little play farm near the big city has been our dream for a long time. We'll have chickens, rabbits, maybe a steer. There are deer everywhere. Love venison but hate deer hunting, so efficiently and easily harvesting them will be great.

My wife works from home as a RN, I've been doing manufacturing consulting. Consulting has been miserable, so I'm just going to start my own machine shop.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • Mobile is pretty different from the rest of the state. We're from the northern end. Gulfport is in Mississippi, IIRC.

It's a beautiful state, I'm really going to miss the land. Have a jar of the red clay dirt to take with me.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • It's so much quieter there. The muffler laws seem to actually be enforced. In Alabama, the penis trucks have become so loud they interrupt conversations inside.

At the voting booth, politics are about the same, however, our neighbors have become scary here. There have been major fascist changes in the state and it has gotten real spooky.

While rural is very much red in Pennsylvania, the cities are blue and that influences lots of things in rural areas. The schools are also way better, my son has been doing online school for a while due to how bad they are here. It will be good for him to actually go back to a physical school.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • Yeah, the politics aren't great there either, but it's no where near as bad as what we've been dealing with.

I'm really looking forward to actually having seasons. First time we were there, people were talking about how bad a heat wave they were having and it was still better than Alabama.

I'm a redneck, and from what I've seen so far, I'll mostly be at home with the people there.

  • Our rusty lathe
  • I was about to say, some elbow grease, and it's probably pretty okay under there.

Takes way more rust than you would think to ruin cast iron.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.
  • Near Pittsburgh, close enough to go to the big city, but far enough out to be in the country.

  • We're finally moving! Been planning this since 2020.

Have lived in the deep south my entire life. Things went really badly during 2020 and we realized we needed to get out. Started saving and preparing, our plan was to move before the next election.

We have bought a 1920's farmhouse that still has 9 acres. 100 year old apple trees, blueberries, vineyard. It's amazing. Part of the land is industrial zoned with power and I'm going to build my machine shop there. We got a steal of a deal, it would be a $500k house and land here.

I bought a '98 Chevy box truck. The boy and I will be making our second trip tomorrow.

    What’s happening with my cactus?
  • Looks like it is showing some etoiliation on the new bud. It has to bud to continue to grow as it was cut of when planted. Aerial root may mean that it is root bound in that pot.

Larger pot with the correct soil for dragon fruit, more sun.

  • This union was not meant to be.
  • 35 is for when the kid is in the truck.

45 is for my damaged hearing by myself.

60 is all the way up, bass boost off, most songs don't distort the sub.

  • Move over, Ford and Chevy: Kei trucks are pulling up as customers opt for smaller, cheaper vehicles
  • I drive a 98 Ranger XLT, it has a 5900 lb towing capacity. I'm pretty much going to keep fixing it forever.

  • OPENSCAD tool for custom printed strap clamps.

If you’ve ever used a CNC router or mill, you’ll know how many little things need to go right before you get anything resembling acceptable results. We could (and probably should?) run …

Pretty nifty. Using several clamps, I could see this working just fine for short run aluminum jobs.

Lemmy, how do you kill a ton of black widow spiders in a garage, without touching them?
  • I second this recommendation, was going to post the same thing. Just watch out for cats and permethrin, it is neurotoxic for them.

  • What's the worst natural disaster you've been in?
  • Dikes or pair of dikes also refers to diagonal cutters. (Look like pliers with blades instead of jaws at the end) They are used for cutting sheet metal, also, wire cutters are also called dikes. Can also be used as a verb: Dike off the corner of that piece of steel, or, dike out that part of the circuit.

My wife is bi and it always messes with her when I say it. Just a trade term.

  • Trailer brake circuit breaker advice.

We're preparing to move about 1000mi.

I'm getting my truck ready to tow a trailer for our three potbelly pigs, two cats and a dog.

'98 Ranger XLT with 4.0L V6, auto trans. Rated for 5900lbs tow, 9500 gross. Even has the overdrive disable and good rear end ratio.

I'm adding a Redarc Liberty brake control. The 7-way plug kit I got includes 30 and 40 amp auto reset breakers for the control and trailer power.

Here's the thing. I don't like the idea of an automatically resetting breaker at 30 amps or more due to the risk of fire or frying the electronics in my truck. I would prefer to install manual reset breakers. I understand that an auto reset might allow some brake capability in the event of a short and that is why they are used. I just don't feel like the auto breaker justification is that likely vs the other risks of auto breakers.

How long does it take the auto breakers to reset?

What are the real world risks using manual reset breakers?

    Opinions/thoughts greatly appreciated!

    Recommendations for cherry blue keyboards.

I use a Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate with cherry blues and love it. Have a good friend who likes using her grandson's gaming keyboard that I think is a nice membrane keyboard. She was interested in my keyboard as it is mechanical like the old keyboards she used back in the day.

We are both office users, not gamers.

I don't want to spend the $179 for a keyboard that might not be what she wants and there are better options now, from what I understand.

Can you please recommend a cherry blue mechanical with a number pad and a steel back plane?

    Squirrel of a lifetime.

Sixteen hunts over three weeks to take her. She was so wiley. Grey squirrel, eyes are dark red with white around edges. She stayed in heavy briars and would run out of trees without lingering. Taken freehand at 35 yards with scope at 7x, .22lr, through a hole in Trifoliate Orange briars. Public land.

Scared to death a hawk would get her.

    I've never hunted harder.

Edit: Dang. Albino squirrels have short lives, hawks take them out and they don't live past the first year. This squirrel lived in an island of trees in a field and is likely albino due to inbreeding. The genes are in no way advantageous and are only rare due to the extreme predation they cause.

I regularly eat fish and game that I kill myself. This is the only trophy I've ever taken. Unless you're a vegetarian, I doubt you have the same respect for animals that I do. I've worked in factory farms and understand, at a shit on boots and pants level, the horror involved with most meat that is eaten. Do you?

Alcoholic. Detoxing myself. Down to roughly two 100 proof shots every 4 hrs during the day. 8 shots in cabonated water last night. Went to bed at 10:30 PM, up at 2:00 AM for two shots. Two shots at 7:30 AM. Lowest I've been in at least a year.

    Fucking hurts.

I need to stiffen up and pull some more.

I hurt. I hurt all the the fucking time. My belly hurts. I'm reducing my drinking but it really sucks. The withdrawals suck real bad.

Lost my colon to U.C. Have a bag on my belly.

I have to move my family out of the south. I have to be physically able to do it. We have to get out.

If I get them out maybe I they'll be able to live happy.

I just want to die. I want the pain to stop. I don't let my people know. They can't do it without me.

I'm tired. I hurt all the time. I'm tired of hurting. I could turn it off, but I don't for now. I'm tired of the pain. I love them and they need me. I just want to make sure they're in a good place, away from here. Then I can finish it.

    Small fan switch sanity check.

Circuit is for controlling the fan on a Raspberry Pi, just on/off according to temp, no PWM. Not sure about the diode as it has a .7V drop and it's a tiny brushless DC motor. No markings on the fan so I measured the current with a multimeter when hooking it up to a USB charger. Circuit was adapted from here using what I have on hand.

Suggestions? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

*EDIT: Confirmed, this circuit works on a Raspberry Pi 4. Base was wired to GPIO 17 and manually tested using commands:

    raspi-gpio set 17 op dh

    raspi-gpio set 17 op dl

I didn't use a breadboard, just hack-n-slash with the wires coming out of the fan, the leads on the thru hole components, a jumper connected to gpio 17 as a socket for the base/resistor lead, and heat shrink tubing for insulation. Folded it up as I closed the housing. Case combo including heatsinks and fan here.

Sound of Freedom: indie movie that Qs are getting wound up about.

    www.rottentomatoes.com Sound of Freedom

Sound of Freedom, based on the incredible true story, shines a light on even the darkest of places. After rescuing a young boy from ruthless child traffickers, a federal agent learns the boy’s sister is still captive and decides to embark on a dangerous mission to save her. With time running out, he...

A good friend's q-lite mother and sister are apparently raving about this movie. Stars Jim 'Jeebus' Caviezel, who is going to Q cons and talking about adrenochrome and such. In theaters now.

It's, supposedly, a true story about Tim Ballard, who runs something called O.U.R. Operation Underground Railroad. Tim Ballard is a Q. I don't closely track Q mythology, but it sounds like the standard child sex trafficking and adrenochrome torture stuff.

Here's a Rolling Stone article about it.

Anyone got the scoop on this thing?

This trend particularly concerns me because it's so easy and appears in the Turner Diary. I figured it's likely to become more frequent as we approach the next election.

Are there any communities tracking qanon/fascist/magat terrorism, threats, and laws?

I used RiF to keep an eye on what is happening around us. My wife is still on Reddit. I was born and raised in the deep south. In 2020, we realized it was time to leave and came up with a plan. We basically lost my extended family and most of our friends.

This is a safety issue for us. These people are dangerous. I need to be able to keep my finger on the pulse of what they're doing and saying.

We'll be moving summer of '24 and have been saving.

Are there any communities similar to /r/qanoncasulties, /r/qult_headquarters, /r/parler_watch?

I'm not great at Lemmy yet, and have tried searching but haven't found anything. My apologies if this breaks a politics rule, I'm not trying to debate or anything. Again, this is about the safety of my family.
