  • Who went "full fedi" yet?
  • I'm in Lemmy and Mastodon. I left Twitter for good about a week after the Tesla guy acquired it and made his first flex on the app. I don't even remember what it was, but I didn't want to be a part of his toy, and all he has done is prove me right over and over. I left Reddit within a couple days of the announcement that mobile app developers were getting screwed, and I'd essentially have to switch to the native app to use a full-featured Reddit. It seemed like a crappy thing to do since developers like LJ Dawson (Sync), the Relay person, etc are who really built Reddit since Reddit was slow to get into apps.

I use Discord but only because it's what's required for a gaming guild, and my dynasty fantasy baseball league uses it too. I have no interest in using it outside of that.

I've never really used Youtube, so I haven't checked out Peertube. Likewise, I never really used Insta, so I haven't looked that closely at Pixelfed. I'm considering Pixelfed since I'm a hobby photographer, but I share my pics on my personal website (I don't care who sees them tbh, it's fun for me) and on my FB. I can't seem to shed FB with so many people I know using that to stay in touch and schedule events, and the Marketplace is leagues better than Craigslist.

  • What are you looking forward to in 2024?
  • I got tired of jumping around between streaming services to get deals and save money. I noticed that a couple major music streamers seemed to collude to raise rates at the same time, and I'm tired of that. I'm setting up my Plex server with some Black Friday deals and am looking forward to enjoying having that at my disposal.

  • I hate chromium
  • I remember using Netscape (my Google keyboard didn't know that word) before Firefox and SeaMonkey. I mostly used SeaMonkey to edit HTML and Firefox for my casual browsing.

  • Americans Are Falling Behind on Their Car Payments
  • Used market used to be better-priced, but I felt it was sketchy unless you were handy or "knew a guy" who could repair it. I decided years ago to only buy new so that I knew it was well-maintained and not abused. I make payments into a savings account and pay cash, or if the best offer is a financing offer, I'll take the financing and either make payments or pay it off right away, depending on whether my savings interest is outperforming the rate of the loan. I only buy pretty basic things. Last car was a base model 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer. I'm in a 2022 Honda HR-V now. My next car will probably be something that takes advantage of the EV tax credit before it expires in 2032. Wife and I share one car, for what it's worth, since we work in the same place.

  • Lazy meal
  • Why don't you already have chopped onion in your fridge for when you're feeling lazy? Be kind to your future self when you have the time and motivation. I chop a sweet onion or two every weekend and use it throughout the week on whatever. Gotta do peppers a couple times a week though. I put that stuff in everything.

  • We No Longer Need a Big Carrier’s Wireless Plan. Discount Ones Are the Way.
  • Team Visible here too. I wanted unlimited so I can stream at work and do some things the firewall would forbid. It's also just my wife and me, so we don't need four lines. They've been excellent for the three months we've had them. It's my first experience with e-sim, and that has been smooth. I'm a little apprehensive about switching it over when we upgrade phones, but we'll figure it out.

  • If linux distributions were tools.
  • Real question if I can sneak one in. If I want to buy a machine suitable to run Darktable for photo editing, which Linux distribution would be ideal for that? Other than photo editing, I might watch movies in browser while browsing other sites on a different screen. That's all I really use PC to do these days. Advice? I don't want to accidently use a butt plug.

Edit for additional context if it wasn't immediately apparent: I am a casual who just doesn't like Microsoft. But I don't use anything else that concerns me for a switch to Linux. I just want easy setup and use for my purposes.

  • Full power (:
  • I'm admittedly not well-versed in international affairs, but hasn't Israel been waiting for an opportunity to do exactly what they're doing for decades? We've armed them to the tooth, and that has always been at least a little concerning because we understood this to be their disposition. I fully expected some light genocide after hearing about the Hamas attack. It's looking like they might exceed expectations too. I'm a little shocked at our indifference.

  • Wait, not like that
  • They've maneuvered themselves to the point where they're just another cable to cut. I'm about to hop in my big ship and cut the cable holding it to the dock. It's the high seas for me!

  • Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?
  • I'm going to complain about not having a primary option for president, vote for the left-most person I can in the primary, and then vote down-ballot (D) in November. There's nothing I need to research with respect to these modern conservatives. Most democrats aren't really much better in most ways, but at least I can look my marginalized friends and colleagues in the eye after the election.

  • ‘Pure greed:’ Etiquette expert explains why tipping has gotten out of control
  • There's only one thing I still do that requires tipping, and that's because I want to get tattoos. After I started seeing tipping screens at restaurants where I pick up my food at the counter, I stopped eating out entirely. I don't even do fast food. I'm tired of trying to remember or decipher what is socially expected and am just done participating in that system. Just pay people a living wage, charge what you need to charge for that, and if you're offering a worthwhile service, you'll be fine.

  • Bemoaning Ohio results, Santorum says ‘pure democracies’ aren’t how to run a country
  • This is the perfect situation where a purely democratic vote is appropriate (not that we should even have to vote on this, but I digress). This doesn't affect your wholesome, small-town voter at all. All they have to do is not have an abortion, and they can make abortion illegal within their own life just like that. Of course people are going to vote for the freedom of their own choice as to whether they have to carry a parasitic body within their own. They should have that freedom to do it or not to do it.

  • www.thegazette.com Voters resoundingly defeat Cedar Rapids school bond

Superintendent Tawana Grover said she has ‘no regrets’ about the $220 bond question, as it gave the district a chance to ‘reengage our community.’

Voters resoundingly defeat Cedar Rapids school bond

I really wish they'd break up these initiatives into line items, but there are probably reasons to do them all together too. My biggest gripe is that I wasn't a fan of turf. We have enough data at this point to be relatively certain that turf is attributed to more injuries than grass (16%). I think the health and safety of children is more important than the aesthetics and convenience of turf.

I also didn't quite understand the math, and I have a degree in that, so I suspect there's something else going on, or the reporter is wrong.

"The bond, if approved, would have raised the Cedar Rapids school property tax rate from $14.67 to $17.37 per $1,000 of taxable value. For an owner with a home assessed at $200,000, the property tax increase would be $282 a year, or $23.50 a month."

That would have been more like $540/yr for a $200,000 house, right? That's $2.70 per $1,000 taxable value. $2.70 * 200 = $540. My only thought is that taxable value vs assessed value isn't the same thing, but I couldn't find anything to verify that.

Regardless, I was a no vote, and I'm a little ashamed to admit that. Either price tag seemed like too much with the recent increase to our property tax, how much MORE we already pay in property tax than the rest of Iowa or the rest of the country, and all the recent inflation without wage increases to match it. It seemed like too much to commit to, and if I'm given the opportunity to prevent a little more bleeding at almost any cost, I will. This referendum didn't seem entirely necessary, but I hope they find a way to trim some fat and resubmit it to a future ballot.
