Reddit is in danger of a death spiral
  • I think the word "data" also supports the theory that this is actually about training data for LLMs rather than ad revenue. If it was actually about 3rd party apps, then why not just require all apps to feed the ads? But according to the Apollo developer, there wasn't even a way to fetch the ads through the API.

I think spez saw what OpenAI/Microsoft were accomplishing using parsed data and got dollar signs in his eyes. The irony is that OpenAI probably already ripped every comment off Reddit up until now, and don't really need more going forward.

  • It’s official — LCD TVs won’t see any further development.
  • Because it's a real problem. I have a decently bright LCD TV, but i live in an apartment, and my living room has a lot of windows in it. I don't think this is an unusual situation. If i had a basement with a theater room, then sure, brightness wouldn't matter so much.

I just feel like a OLEDs are good at one thing - color reproduction. But they're worse at literally everything else including cost.

  • Does the Defederation of lemmy.world With Beehaw Make It So That Beehaw Posts Will Not Show In My lemmy.world Feed?
  • Why doesn't lemmy.world read new posts from beehaw? The local users here wouldn't be able to send comments back to the beehaw version, but we could at least browse the posts, and even leave comments that other lemmy.world users could read.

  • Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?
  • I think i would just use both. There are some niche communities on Reddit that probably won't be on lemmy for a while, and i will miss them if spez follows through..

I am very hopeful for the future of lemmy, and i think the fediverse is a great solution to the problem of corporate greed infecting social media. But I'm concerned that if spez backs down, then people will conclude that we won and it's safe to go back to Reddit.

  • It’s official — LCD TVs won’t see any further development.
  • No, they still get burn in. They also aren't very bright out of the box, and they get dimmer over time. They're also more expensive than LCDs despite having a limited lifespan. I've never been a fan of OLEDs for these reasons and my theory is that manufacturers want to sell them because they have a limited life span so they can sell more.

MicroLED I'm super pumped for though. No clue when we can actually expect to buy them though.

  • Why does the frontpage of kbin.social work so much better than any other server?
  • It's definitely broken for me, I've been trying to figure out what the problem was. Basically the only way for me to browse is on new. Hot or active only give posts from two days ago. I'm also on jerboa so i wasn't sure if that was the problem.

  • *Permanently Deleted*
  • Every day, I open jerboa and see like 5x more communities with a lot of activity. If we can keep up this level of growth for another week or so, then i don't think I'll miss Reddit much. Especially if i really have to download the official app. On the other hand, if Reddit backs down at the last minute and agrees to allow third party apps, then i could see lemmy users going back to Reddit out of habit.
