I haven't come across a smart switch before as I generally try to minimise the number of smart devices in my home. I presume you have to pair your phone with something. It sounds quite intriguing.

  • iFixit is breaking up with Samsung. ‘Samsung’s approach to repairability does not align with our mission,’ says iFixit’s CEO.
  • I fully agree. Like even 90% would reduce the amount of waste significantly without really impacting usability.

I got a reasonably high end phone for my last one (about €500 at the time) and it survived so so well and I only learned about the 80% thing about 2 years into it and still was charging it to full occasionally.

This automatic 80% thing that just came in is great.

  • iFixit is breaking up with Samsung. ‘Samsung’s approach to repairability does not align with our mission,’ says iFixit’s CEO.
  • You're welcome. :)

I had learned about the "only charging to 80% extending battery longevity significantly" thing a while back and got over 5 years out of my last phone because of it.

I did switch to lineage OS after OnePlus stopped doing updates. Still... Not having to try to time it myself is a really nice feature now.

  • Some newer phones allow you to stop charging at 80% which will essentially extend the life of your battery for as many years as you want it.

    Settings->battery->stop charging at 80%

I get a full day out of 80% and I'm nearly always near a charging source so I use it and haven't found any issues with it.

I am pretty sure this only showed up in Android 14 for me. OnePlus phone.

  • Do Christians really think that being educated is sinful and should be avoided?
  • This is also my experience exactly.

  • What are the things / events which had the deepest impact in your life?
  • A few for me:

    • Death of my father.
    • Getting married. Hitting 20 years in August. Hopefully many more to come.
    • Realising I didn't enjoy the business course I was on in college, burning the two years already spent and moving to computer science which I loved every minute of.
    • Having kids. They bring me so much joy.
    • Leaving a well paid job that I didn't really enjoy and starting my own business.
    • Travel. It's so important to experience different cultures and viewpoints.
    • edit: Finding a sport that I loved. I wasn't a sporty kid but decided to start trying different things in my 20s.
  • Back in the 1970s when we switched to unleaded gas, what did the vehicles that ran on leaded gas do?
  • In Ireland they had something called LRP or lead replacement petrol for a good while. Eventually it just fizzled out as people had their old cars converted.

I believe there was an additive you could buy at a parts shop for cars that couldn't be converted.

  • What are you currently excited for?
  • Also some asshole at a party last night said something stupid to me to make me feel unnecessarily unwelcome

Fuck that guy. He's the problem, not you. Try to look at it from that perspective and you may ease your mind a little.

Who does that? It's horrible to treat someone like that.

Hopefully we can figure out a way to stop buying the blood oil.

  • This reminds me of a Malcolm in the Middle episode. They're not really a thing where I live, but nearly everyone lives near the sea here.

    Is it outdoor?

Keen to hear any novel ideas (or just the humdrum of your weekend).

Planning on watching Raiders of the Lost Ark and / or Star Trek Voyager with the 10 year old myself. Going on a decent hike and playground with the gang also in the mix.

    The usual sports stuff.
