An Important Distinction [Saturday Morning Breakfast cereal]
  • That's a fair point. I can try to avoid politics in this community in the future.

As for this post, I'll defer to the community mod to either leave it up or take it down. No hard feelings from me either way.

  • Getting Their Attention
  • It's a TikTok meme that blew up a few days ago. Google "hawk tuah".

  • I can see your rule from space
  • Somewhere in the northwest US. I don't want to be more specific, lest I give away my location too easily.

  • why do a bunch of gas stations have 88 octane cheaper than 87?
  • That cheaper 88 octane fuel is a blend of 85% unleaded gasoline and 15% ethanol. It's also known as E15 fuel.

The ethanol is an oxygenate: it adds oxygen atoms to the fuel mix so the fuel burns more completely. That's good for vehicle emissions. However, the ethanol is less energy dense than gasoline so you will get slightly worse mileage.

"Trans Rights Matter!" spotted on Google Earth.

Also painted on there: Eat the fuckin' rich!! No human being is illegal Nothing short of revolution will save us

"So many uses!" (Black Leaf 40 ad from Country Gentleman magazine 1939)
  • It's amazing humanity has survived. So many old products were like "Here's some concentrated poison. Spread it in your house, on your food, and in the air you breathe. It also makes a great toothpaste and eyeliner!"

  • This came to me in a vision.
  • We went through all this trouble to develop the F-15. It would be a crime against humanity to leave it on the ground.

  • What did people do before smartphones to pass the time when you were bored?
  • Some people had magazine racks next to the toilet. There was a whole Seinfeld episode about George taking a book into the bathroom.

  • Tight fit rule
  • Lllllllike a glove!

  • Tip?
  • Why not gif? It's basically a universal format. The file size is reasonable. And gif is lossless if you stay within a limited color palette, which this comic does.

  • Nature is Fucking Lit
  • There is one, but it's quiet: [email protected]

Blaze's suggestion seems like the way to go. That's a much more active community.

  • How can I get into the sailing scene?
  • Contact your local sailing club/yacht club. They often have classes and rental boats. Even if they don't, you can sometimes find someone with a boat who is willing to teach a beginner.

  • What's the easiest song or melody someone with not experience can play on an acoustic guitar?
  • "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys is the same Ab7 chord for the whole song. Lock in that one chord shape and then all you have to do is get the strumming pattern. Put a capo across four strings on the first fret to make life even easier for your left hand.
    https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/beastie-boys/sabotage-chords-3688055
This page says there are slight changes in the chorus. Just don't strum the low E string for that part. If you or your friends are belting out the lyrics then it won't matter anyway.

The intro and verse to "About A Girl" by Nirvana is also easy. You go back and forth between Em and G, and it's a relaxed tempo. To play the chorus you have to learn a few bar chords. https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/nirvana/about-a-girl-tabs-36242

  • Name this monstrosity
  • Blyat Hat

  • Name this monstrosity
  • Tense Fence

  • CAD "best practices" that happen to avoid the toponaming problem?
  • I'll use datum planes rather than drawing directly on object faces

I haven't had a chance to try FreeCAD, but this is generally good advice in other parametric CAD tools, too. Create "skeleton" features early on (planes, datums, simple sketches) and define later features by referencing the skeleton as much as possible. It avoids creating a long chain of feature dependencies where Feature A changes and breaks Feature B, which breaks Feature C, etc.

  • [Weekly thread] How are you doing with your communities?
  • I have essentially given up on the one and only community I created. I opened [email protected] when I first came to Lemmy, and did my best to regularly post interesting things. It was really exciting when I hit 500 subscribers, too! Unfortunately, I ran out of steam before the community took off. I also moved my time and attention elsewhere. At this point c/engineering is dead unless someone else picks up the baton.

Sorry for the rant. But it felt good to get that out.

  • Some days it'll be like that, take 2

I lost four spokes on my morning commute when the chain decided to jump off the big cog. Of course I don't have a spoke protector. (Who needs a dork disc? Bad things won't happen if you keep your bike maintained. /s) I was lucky to skid to a stop rather than crash when the rear wheel locked up.

PSA: keep a few zip ties in your repair kit.

    Whale fall

    >A whale fall occurs when the carcass of a whale has fallen onto the ocean floor, typically at a depth greater than 1,000 m (3,300 ft), putting them in the bathyal or abyssal zones. On the sea floor, these carcasses can create complex localized ecosystems that supply sustenance to deep-sea organisms for decades.

Buddhist flag spotted in the wild

I didn't expect to see this in the rural western US.

Please pardon the water drops in the image. I was shooting through a car window.

A better picture of the flag is on Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_flag

This three-sided pole on an airport tram

I had never seen one of these before today. They're great. Way better than reaching for a single pole in a crowded car and wrapping your hand around some stranger's fingers. And If you have the whole thing to yourself you can hook your arm through it.

    What are your weather limits?

I was excited to ride to work today in the sunny spring weather. Then I saw the wind forecast. No thank you, I'll pass. I ride directly into the wind on my commute home, and am completely exposed the whole way.

Edit: For people who use proper units, 43 miles/hour is 69 km/hour.
