For me, I kept my last phone for 3 years and upgraded because I didn't have enough storage. New phone is a little nicer, has a few new features, but I may well keep it for a few years again.
I use Black Masking tape to cover them a bunch. It cuts the blinding glare, but you can still see them, as they're often integral configuration.

I think part of it has been watching Twitter just completely abandon any attempts at treating users and developers well, and seeing that people are still active there.
