Thank you to /u/anon_smithsonian in particular for taking care of everyone on /r/redditisfun.
RIF, you're quirky and rough around the edges, but you've always gotten the job done. You know how to get out of the way and show people the articles, discussions, pictures, and videos they came for.
You have the silliest name, but we love you all the more for it. RIF will always be fun in our hearts.
RIF has been so much of my life.
I'm honored that so many of you have felt the same way.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me. It's been fun.
Your app was the only way I could effectively use reddit on mobile. Not because of any physical difficulty, but because I became so accustomed to it, the features and powerful simplicity. The engineering addage: "the product isn't complete when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away" rang so true with your excellent app.
Cheers, and I can't wait to see what you can do with Lemmy and Tildes.
A Reddit (was) Fun user since 2009
Without RIF, there's no fun in Reddit. I don't think I've ever used another app in my 11 (wow, sounds like more than I thought..) years on there. Wishing you all the best and thanks for the meme, laughs, insights and info.
Reddit Is Fun was how I started using Reddit before there was an official Reddit app. For nearly a decade I have used RIF almost every day of my life, and I will miss it dearly. Thank you for all the good memories. This thank you message will be my first comment on lemmy, and I truly hope this community will thrive.
Thank you so much. RIF was Reddit for me. Thank you for all of your hard work and for being a part of our lives in this space. When I'll look back on my 12 years on Reddit, it will always be through a RIF filter. Best of luck for anything you may pursue going forward.
RIF was the true no-nonsense Reddit app for sure. Thank you for many many years of service. I hope the Tildes site opens up at some point, and will likely be using your app again should that come to pass. Make some noise if you ever make a kbin or lemmy app, I know for sure you will have plenty of users from day 0.
I can't remember why I switched to RIF exactly, but it was my go-to Reddit mobile experience for many years. I never bothered to look at anything else as it perfectly fit what I was looking for in a Reddit app.
Thanks for putting out such a great app, and best of luck in the future!
I can. I had been using Bacon Reader and something changed with it that made it so annoying to me that I looked for alternatives and found RIF and the rest was history.
Thats really sad. I started using the app about 13 years ago, in a time where I had very little frends and thought a girlfriend was never an option. Now 13 years later im going to marry in july and have all my friends around me. So thanks Reddit is fun for filling a hole I had all these years ago.
I REALLY wish another app would use the same drop-down menu RiF had. I loved that I could just type "fli" and it would sort thru all my subs and show "flightsim" and "microsoftflightsim"
That was the main reason I stuck with it the entire time.
I've had the RIF app for over 10 years. I never taught an app stopping it's service would affect me but this honestly hurts. Thank you for everyone that developed and maintained the app, you have a special place in my heart.
App will be missed, starting to migrate to new lands. Reddit may be dead but hopefully we all find a new home. Thanks for the memories Reddit is Fun and all the support from the crew to make an awesome app.
Just to let you know how ingrained RIF was in my routine...
I just woke up, grabbed my phone, unlocked it and tapped "RIF is Fun golden platinum". Your app was the first thing I opened on my phone every morning.
Your app was the perfect way to digest Reddit without the noise. My experience of a neatly curated internet on mobile is gone.
Unlike a lot of people here, I admittedly will probably continue to use old.reddit on desktop (with certain browser extensions of course), to get me to the closest thing to what rif golden platinum was. But my Reddit usage will definitely plummet, as I refuse to use that disorganised, pro-advertiser-anti-user mess which is the official app/new Reddit.
Thank you TalkLittle for navigating us through the noise for all these years and getting us to the news and content that mattered to each one of us.
13-year redditor here. RiF has been my most-used and most-loved app that whole time. The elegantly simple and intuitive UI also shaped the way I expect apps to behave. It truly felt perfect to me.
Thank you for all the bacon, friend. Looking forward to supporting your future endeavors.
I'm currently using connect for Lemmy, but rif had so many quality of life features I didn't realize were so nice until now. soooo we ever gonna get Lemmy is Fun?
When I was first introduced to reddit in around 2008 or 2009, I found rif and thought it was the official app. I have used it ever since and it's the only way I knew reddit. Even using the reddit website felt weird. Now I can't imagine using reddit without it, so I have moved here to Lemmy and I'm trying out the app options. All are better than the official reddit app so far! I'll miss you rif 🫡
RiF was BY FAR my most used app for 10+ years. RiF was Reddit for me... And now Reddit is dead.
Thanks for bringing me 10 good years. You changed my life in so many ways. I'm sad but hopefully after this turmoil we can find a bright future together.
RIF was a daily for me. I never really cared too much for advertising on reddit. However the office I work has absolutely terrible signal. RIF would absolutely power through efficiently browsing reddit. Now that i have switched to the official app, the majority of my day is just waiting for content to load.
A real shame. The volume of people, and niche content on Reddit is incredible. I have a huge love for railways, model railways, virtual railways and... there are no communities here. Niche within a Niche.
I only started using reddit frequently in the past 2-3 years, but found the official app incredibly buggy and prone to freezing. RIF was an awesome app and very well-optimized, always ran like a dream for me and was very easy to use. Thanks for all your hard work.
It seems weird to be sad about an app. My reddit account is 13 years old and I honestly couldn't tell you when I started using RIF or how I even found out about it, but it was the one and only reddit app that I used and it followed me across 5 different Android phones over the years.
From deep down, I just want to say thank you talklittle. You could argue that I probably spent way too much time on reddit, but so much of that time was spent on the app that you created. I found endless things through RIF that I shared with friends over the years. It got me through airport layovers, ferry sailings, hospital waiting rooms, breakups, late nights, and so much more. All those little moments in life where you need a quick escape, a laugh, or just need to check in on the world. The app and all your efforts will be deeply missed.
Without exaggeration the best Android app I've ever used, and the most used one on my every phone for over a decade. Thank you so much for working on it for so long and giving us all the best damn reddit experience there was. See you around on Tildes!
I appreciated all the work you did, mate. RIF was fantastic, did the job, and now the only time I'll see reddit is from random google results. Maybe I'll suddenly become more productive now.
Got started and introduced to reddit via RIF 9 years ago and never tried anything else. First day here and hope to see lemmyisfun one day and bring LIF to this community. Thanks for all the hard work!
RIF was such a great app. I used it daily, and I will miss it fondly. I remember checking for Reddit apps 7 years ago; people liked RIF, and it seemed like such a simple one to use. Installed it, tried it, and never looked back. Thanks for everything.
Thanks for the app over all the years! It was a sad moment seeing the 429 error message pop up. RIF was the only way I accessed reddit on mobile. It'll feel weird not tapping that icon anymore. 💚
It was the best of times. I remember downloading rif for the first time, so many years ago now. I never looked back. I really appreciated how simple and minimal it was. Well done, and keep us updated as to whatever you're working on.
I don't know why, but I'm still in shock it actually happened. RIF is the only way I've ever used Reddit. Spez is burning down one of the best and most informative communities just to up his future net worth a few percentage points. It's disgusting.
Thank you TalkLittle, RIF was an amazing app and I spent a lot of time with it. One of the first things I did was get premium for it and that was an amazing value for how much I got out of the app. You are a skilled developer and I hope you find success in both your Tildes app as well as other future development projects. RIP RIF and the Reddit that we knew.
Thanks for all these years, RiF was my most used app and it was always a pleasure to use, it will be missed! I'll keep hoping you someday decide to do a remake of it for the Fediverse as well; but if not we'll see you over at Tildes
Thank you for everything, RIF was all I used from the first day I used Reddit to the last.
I did try other more "modern" apps but always came back and got the GP.
Lemmy feels kinda like RIF as a website, very simplistic but none of the BS. Exactly how I want it.
I've used Reddit Is Fun since around early 2011 when I got my first Android Phone. A few months later it was on sale on the (then called) Android Market and I got Reddit Is Fun Golden Platinum.
It's been my only way to access Reddit since I installed it and I've been on Reddit since around November 2005 when friends showed it to me.
Thanks for making an app that was so easy and pleasant to use. I tried Alien Blue and Relay since others were using them, but they lasted a few days and each time I was going back to RIF.
Thanks u/talklittle !!!
(I don't know how to use Lemmy yet so I don't think this is how you ping users)
RIF was reddit to me, so I guess that's it. Feels kinda weird right now, opening the app and seeing it no longer works. Sad day. I'll make a home here moving forward
Thank you @talklittle for all your work, as many others said here, RIF was probably the most used app I had and it was my main tool used for Reddit.
All the best man.
I have really enjoyed your app, and am sad that era of my life is over. It is really what got me into Reddit so much. Sure I moved over from Digg, but was only a light user till RIF.
I know you will do a great job with the tildes app, and maybe someday I'll get an invite over there.
Loved RIF, was simple, easy to use with nothing stuck in it that wasn't useful. It was the only app I ever used to browse Reddit. thanks for everything, I miss it already
Although I was a Sync user, I played around with RIF quite a bit. I'm going to miss it, but looking forward to seeing what you do with tildes and lemmy.
I'm going to miss RIF so much. It's been part of my daily life for longer than I care to think about. I wish you'd do a kbin app but I understand it's probably a bit saturated at this point. Everyone is racing to get a good app out. I wish you all the best with Tildes. Thank you so much for all the work you put in over the years
Thank you, Talklittle. Thank you for absolutely everything.
Reddit was fun while it lasted. There's some things I must still use it for, but I'm hoping to make a full switch otherwise later on. I refuse to use the official app.
I got one 2 weeks ago and checked it out, it's not for me tbh. The way communities work over there is that you can't just create a communtiy (basically a subreddit), it has to be created by admins when a topic sort of organically grows out of an existing community. So it's a cool idea i guess but it won't have the same vibe of anyone can create anything that reddit had.
Thank you, RIF was my main source of entrainment for 11 years. I guess you can say all good things come to an end, and RIF was most definitely something I enjoyed.
Reddit has made it clear that profit is above all and users be damned. I say launch your IPO and let us watch the firey demise of what was once a good platform. Reddit will become a glorified hell hole of corporate shills (1000x worse than it is now). This may be a blessing in disguise, and create new opportunities for the development of better apps, like an app for Lemmy!
Anyway, rant is over, and thank so so so much for RIF. I cant wait to see what you develop next!
I'm convinced that there is more going on behind the scenes. Like Twitter was gutted recently, reddit follows. The ones with power don't like the masses having as much access to information and the ability for like minded individuals to talk with each other. Elon Musk was a scapegoat as is Spez now in an effort to shape global access to information.
