Today’s the last day for most third-party Reddit apps before they shut down indefinitely. I’ve been on Apollo from its inception and alien blue before that. Countless F5s, comments, “war chests”, ups, and downs during that time.
These apps and r/Gunners are the reasons why I became a “Redditor” in the first place. I really hate what’s going on with the platform now, how greed is seemingly at the forefront of any decision. How the app is becoming less and less about the users and their contents but more and more about squeezing said users out of every quid (avatars, coins/gold, ads, etc).
I know it’s going to be hard to stop getting on Reddit since it’s become such an ingrained part of my daily routine (would literally just whip out my phone and refresh the sub every so often daily) but I’ve decided after today I’ll start to wean myself off it.
The plan going forward is to just check the sub on my PC/Laptop and at least try to use Lemmy as a mobile replacement. I know that’s going to be hard initially as the community here, whilst comfy and nice; is still only a tiny fraction of the sub hence an understandably lower level of activity comparatively. It’s silly season after all, aren’t we all anticipating the latest updates even if they’re just what we know but worded slightly differently, as infuriating as it may be?
I’m very happy to see that we’ve carved out a space for ourselves here, and how it isn’t just dead after like a week. Let’s try to make this place as active as we can! Post whatever you deem to be interest and we can all shit on/praise it in the comments together. On the sub I’ve always been a commenter but I’m trying to make an effort and post any tweets/updates from notable sources here to keep activity levels up.
I’m very glad to see some familiar names becoming regulars already, which is nice! Makes this place feel more and more like a true r/Gunners alternative.
Anyway, guess I’m done here with my little ramble. It’s been a weird week… 🦀🦀🦀
I’m very interested to see what happens when the apps close down. If that shift to Lemmy that people here sense will happen will actually occur.
I know many people that are just going to stop using Reddit after their app shuts down, but I don’t know if they will replace that with a threadiverse alternative.
Always felt that since it was never officially endorsed by the r/Gunners mod on the sub, a lot of people simply aren't aware of this place.
The ones that are, might be put off by the onboarding process - which isn't exactly straightforward nor user friendly...
For reddit, it's sign up -> search for community -> start participating.
Whereas here on Lemmy its like: choose an instance -> sign up (wait for approval, if needed) -> log in (some might encounter the dreaded spinning circle) -> search for community (might not show up if the other instance is unfederated) -> participate.
The ones that have made it still complain about how this site feels outdated, too barebones, "like a website from 2008", etc.
Guess in the meantime while we wait for updates to the platform we'll just do what we do best; shitpost, give our uninformed hot takes and in your case create high-quality poorly drawn art!
Yeah my hope is that the onboarding process here is simpler than the onboarding was from Twitter to mastodon.
On mastodon it was hard to find community or people that shared the same interests. It’s inherently built into it here because you are following topics and not people.
I hope that makes adoption here better than it was on mastodon and I think also once there are apps are released that look better than the site does that should also help.
Yeah, I’ve liked that one. I personally really like Memmy. There’s been almost nightly updates to it as well. I’m convinced the developer doesn’t sleep.
@little_niggle@poorlydrawnarsenal I think it's best to give people the signup link (i.e. https://lemmy.world/signup) for a server where there's a community they're interested in. Removing the analysis paralysis of figuring out which server to join goes a long way to encouraging people to give it a go.
Yeah I was actively promoting this place during the early days, but I didn’t want to risk spamming the sub or annoy people…
Think the way to go now is if the r/Gunners Reddit mods create an official pinned post or add it to the sidebar then perhaps we’ll see a higher influx.
For now we’re still seeing day on day growth, which is encouraging!
Yeah, a fair few people have already left. This caused some complications for one of the subs I moderate, as the absence of those people skewed a poll and let the nay-sayers get their way with basically no further protesting to the reddit overlords.
I don't understand how some redditors can just roll over for this.
People are dumb. They did the same with Netflix. Also, people being lazy, just loginto a website and see everything but with Lemmy they have to do prep work so they just give up and go back.
Same here, it's honestly kinda depressing when I deleted everything. Ironically making me use Twitter a lot more which isn't great either, but that's where the journalists post shit.
Well said. Obviously the Sub is huge to me. Like you said, I don't plan on installing the official Reddit app on my phone, so I'll still be doing my job when I'm on my computer (which to be fair is incredibly often), but I downloaded a Lemmy app yesterday and that will be my alternative when I'm on my phone.
I’m in the same boat. Tonight’s my last night of browsing /r/gunners on my phone which was a daily thing for quite some time. Hope lemmy takes of in the upcoming months
