Police and fire personnel responded to the report of a fire at the strip mall containing the congressman's office at around 1 a.m. Sunday.
Summary
A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly setting fire to U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman’s office in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, citing anger over the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding a TikTok ban.
The suspect admitted to the arson, which caused no injuries as the building was unoccupied.
The ban, upheld due to national security concerns about TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, has sparked significant public reactions.
Grothman had supported legislation to ban TikTok earlier in 2024.
A lot of people don't seem to realize that a lot of small businesses and sole proprietors rely on tictok to generate business. For most people it's just a stupid video app but for tens of thousands of americans, their livelihood just got ripped out from under them.
I think those people have a right to be pissed.
I think people with publicly searchable addresses shouldn't try to actively fuck over large swaths of people in one go. We should all act with integrity anyway, but boy when you're public, it's a really good idea to put in a little more effort on that front.
I get the sentiment but there's people that actually make their living on this platform. So for someone shouting at someone else to get some perspective maybe you want to curtail your messaging.
I'm pretty new here but this seems like a Lemmy bubble take from what I've seen so far. An L take at that. Just because you were told it's just a silly dance app, doesn't make it true. The flow of information there is wild and it serves as a great source of 1st account world news and a great place for small and start up businesses to gain footing in the market. You are being overly reductive and I can't figure out WHERE the vitriol is coming from.
What’s more dangerous to me is the fact that the government is trying to restrict our sources of information. People are PISSED. And should they be setting fire to congressmen’s offices? Nah but there’s a reason people have fled to another Chinese app in protest.
