This just shows that Sony has lost the plot. They discontinue vita because people have phones and don't need handhelds. Now with success of steam deck and switch they want a new psp.
It feels pretty in-line with how they have been trying to push streaming games instead of running them natively.
PS5 isn't practical.
Just do a handheld PS4. That's achievable and opens a huge library.

I wonder how far off this is planned for. Handheld PS5 obviously isn't viable now, but if this isn't hitting shelves for a few years maybe it eventually will be.
At some future point, it will be, for sure. But it draws 200 watts, so you're going to need to improve the efficiency by a factor of ~10, costs haven't decreased like normal due to a bunch of global factors, and it's looking like we're getting closer to the point of needing new techniques to continue shrinking. If you wait long enough it will be an option, but you could very reasonably match the PS4 and scale up production in the next year or so if you wanted to.

Tbh if they didn't learn from last time (vita) it deserves to fail if they're not including a usable microSD card slot. We're at a point where the cat is out of the bag even for the average consumer, when games can be 100GB+, noone will buy it if they screw about with being an overpriced console + overpriced games. The console needs to be affordable, with affordable memory and then they'll make their profit from the games.
They will probably have it all online, cloud etc.
Which, given they actually have competition in the market, might mean they price competitively.
When you consider that a major feature for the PS5 was a highly optimized I/O controller for a very fast SSD, I have no faith whatsoever that we'll be seeing SD cards as a viable game storage mechanism. Unfortunately.
This won't exactly be like the PSP or Vita, because it's not going to have its own separate software library. A large part of what held those platforms back was the fact that developers were too busy making console games, but if this just runs PS4/5 titles then at least that part is sorted out.
It's the same as what Nintendo is doing, one software platform for titles that can be played handheld or console.
Gonna have a tough time competing with Steam Deck if they are up to their old proprietary tricks. Only way they could undercut that is by slashing the price, but considering what a PS5pro goes for, I doubt it.
Sony has twice tried to make a handheld work, twice did fantastic with hardware with features ahead of its time and then... nothing. They immediately give up. I loved the Vita and see the Switch as basically Vita 2. A bit more work and that could have been yours, Sony.
I would love for them to get into a handheld fight with Nintendo, as both Nintendo and Sony put out much more quality stuff when they are trying to prove themselves against someone and both have been coasting in their corners for a while now.
Steam deck and it's derivatives exists, this is like a 1000 second latency market chase. Especially since Sony releases their games on PC.
What games though
If I had bought a portal I would be disappointed if they offered a standalone device so soon. It would feel like a bait and switch.
I'm all for them offering the best products they can at any point in time but it would feel like they started with a gimped starter model so people who upgrade end up buying both.

Portal is cheap for what it is. I wouldn't be upset. I'd like a standalone device for when I go camping. I don't have starlink and cellular is not sufficient
