What does Airplane Mode do?

It turns off anything that emits electromagnetic radiation. (Well, that emits largish amounts. All of the phone emits a little bit.)

Some times most of the stuff that only receives it too (like the GPS). But devices are getting smart about that, and actually only turning off the things that matter.
