Acanthamoeba keratitis - a rare disease in which amoebae invade the cornea of the eye; affects up to 1 in 10,000 contact wearers worldwide.

*the 1 in 10,000 number is very high end estimate. From the study:

The estimated rate of Acanthamoeba keratitis is 1 per 250,000 people in the United States, although rates vary among studies: from 1.65-2.01 per million population up to 1 per 10,000 people who wear contact lenses.

  • That doesn't sound fun at all.

The treatment is often initiated by instilling drops onto the surface of the eye every hour, 24 hours a day, for at least the first 48ā€“72 hours. If an appropriate response to therapy, this may be reduced to hourly administrations during the day only, which is continued for several weeks to months.

Sleep deprivation for 3 days sure beats permanent blindness, but that must still suck.

    • Fuck that. Desperate times, desperate measures. Iā€™d happily pay a doctor to knock me out with sedatives every night and a nurse to administer the drops on schedule while I dream of playing hopscotch with Hunter S. Thompson.
