I totally agree with you that PTA is a-must to control finances but it not easy to analyze or understand in depth the financial situation (something that goes beyond the monthly or anual expenses, revenues, p/l... ). But information is there in the journals.
I also migrated to just and it was a big change. I can think about the most useful-complex reports and make them available with a simple command to never forget them. And even when the report is displayed, the hledger command is displayed so I can remember/verify the meaning of the report. I have a bunch of reports I use often:
just common-expenses: all the discretional expenses (excluding taxes...) with my partnerjust my-expenses: my personal discretional expenses (excluding taxes...)just is: my overall inconmestatementjust is-job: my incomestatement of all the expenses (including taxes) against the revenues of my job. This report gives me my savings and I like this report because I prefer to assign the revenues of my investments to the ROI of my investments.just roi:hledger roiROI report of my investments- ....
I tried hledger-vega but it was a bit complex to maintain and to modify, but savings graph was really clarifying. It help me to understand what was really a saving in my journal.
I will check https://hledger.org/scripts.html#hledger-combine-balances and https://hledger.org/scripts.html#hledger-bar. hledger-combine-balances is the first report I was interested in :).
Trends to analyze expenses and revenues
This is a brain storming I want to share with you 😆 .
I feel that PTA is very good to track every transaction but sometimes it is difficult to "understand" the evolution or if I am in the right path of my finances. It easy to know your expenses one month, year... (hledger bal expenses -p 2023 or hledger bal expenses: -M -p 2023). But it does not provide a good and quick picture if I am expending more or not.
I think that many use graphics to try to understand the trend of our personal finances. But I think it could be also achieved with text reports. I am thinking in two kind of reports:
- Balance Report to compare the same period of time in the last years. For example, compare the Q1 (or months, or weeks...) of the last 3-4 years

- Moving Average Report. For example, I can obtain the average expenses in the last 12 months with

The idea would be to have a report to know if I am spending less in average in the last X months and, not exactly month to month or quarter to quarter.

These are a bunch of ideas. Perhaps it should not be directly linked with the reporting capabilities of PTA. Perhaps it should be scripted with bash, with org-mode...

I track the investments with the "@ notation" since I came to hledger from ledger-cli and I don't see any clear improvement to convert it to "standard postings with equity:conversion accounts". Any improvement? only to get to balance the book?
better investment tracking with hledger roi 1.31
The last version 1.31 of hledger came with an improvement to the output of hledger roi that makes easier the tracking of investments to even take decisions. They added the "TWR/period" column to the report.
Until now, "hledger roi" provided the annualized IRR and the annualized TWR but not the real return of the desired period. The difference between return and annualized return is key, because if I earned 5% for 6 months, I earned an 10.25% annualized return but what I really have in my pocket is an additional 5% of my initial investment.
The next screenshot is the output of the first 9 months of 2023.
Now for every month I have the anualized IRR and TWR, but the most interesting column is the "TWR/period" column which display the return of the period. Finally, the last line provides the return of the first nine months of the year (TWR/period) and also the annualized TWR and IRR.
AFAIK immich organize photos with albums not in folders. So, If i move from immich to another software (librephotos, photoprism...), the new software is aware of albums? I am worried on organizing my photos every time I change of photo management application.
this is more or less my current workflow but i feel that is quite difficult to use/find photos in my android phone due to the lack of one android app.

I need to put some order with the photos I take and I receive with my android phone. Just now I use Nextcloud sync client to upload and Photo/Memories Nextcloud Apps to manage photos.
However, I am not very happy with this setup because of the lack of one Android Application for photos and, thus, the photo gallery of my phone is totally different to the Photo/Memories timeline. And photos are not deleted from my mobile phone when I delete them in Photo/Memories. Which selfhosted photo manager do you think is better to backup and manage photos in sync with the phone?
A second question, is it better to manage the photo gallery with a folder structure or with the album functionality of the Photo application? Which is the best interoperable solution? If I use albums in Memories then I can export those albums to Immich, Librephotos... ? Or I would have to create all the albums again after the export?
Yes, you explain better :-) The idea is that shell.nix is my development environment so I would like to use that shell.nix to interactive shells (nix-shell) and to run scripts (non-interactive use). I understand I could use a nix-shell shebang in every script, but that requires maintenance (when I modify the shell.nix file, modify the shellbang of all my scripts) and it is prune to errors (for example, modify the shell.nix and forget to modify the shebang of my scripts).

I have a personal source project I created a shell.nix file for. However, in the project I have also scripts I want to execute periodically non-interactively. Could I use the nix-shell shebang pointing to shell.nix file in order to have the same programs when I use nix-shell interactively and when I launch the scripts?
Firstly you must understand what is double-entry book keeping. Then, you can do double-entry book keeping wirh many tools, one of them is Plain Text Accounting (PTA) tools such as hledger.
My personal path to PTA was firstly read the manual and use Gnucash. It is also a double entry accounting tool but not plain text. I understood accounting principles and then I moved to PTA.

I just created the community but I lack of experience moderating other communities. So, I think it would be advisable to have more moderators, perhaps, two or three additional moderators.

It seems that lemmy.ml is a FOSS and privacy focused lemmy server run by two of the delevelopers of lemmy. Descripton of lemmy.ml is "A community of privacy and FOSS enthusiasts, run by Lemmy’s developers". Due to that, it seems to be more limited: NFSW blocking, account (like in the mastodon instace of fosstodon.org) and community creation is reviewed to avoid creation of accounts/communities not related to the server.
And lemmy.world would be a more widespread server with the advantage that account and community creation is not reviewed. One new fediverse user that want to post to the PTA community would probably select the same server of the PTA community for its account and it would create the account without review.
(I am the author of the comment in Reddit) AFAIK there is no instance of lemmy in fosstodon.org and there is no FOSS-only-purpose server in Lemmy.
I agree perhaps lemmy.world server is one of the best options to locate the community due the size (size is important in the fediverse because higher servers are supposed less tending to disappear or to have funding problems) (https://lemmy.world/post/579472) and as @[email protected] said it includes the lemmy word. However, so far, there is no way to migrate one community from one lemmy server to another one and the only solution would be to create a new community in a new server and remove this one to avoid confusion (there are few posts so I think is a good time to do it).
