Your thoughts on compacts cars like this?
  • It looks similar to what I drive. I like it. It is spacious enough for a family. It is also roomy enough for a tallish person (around 190cm) to drive comfortably. My partner uses it for their commute daily, and we use it for family outings or shopping.

I do also walk or cycle for certain things, but where I live a car is a necessity if you have a family.

They use a lot less fuel and have a much smaller footprint, which is good. But have just enough oomph to go on the expressways here.

  • It’s not about losing face. It is the fact that seishain, or permanent employees are very hard to fire. The company needs to keep a record of the employee’s failures.

In addition, the company needs to implement and execute improvement plans. The results of those need to be reviewed. The next plan has to be implemented. And so on.

Only when they fail to show improvement a certain number of times (I don’t know exactly) can they be legally fired. You can’t just fire someone like in the U.S. style of at will employment. That would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

So it is easier and cheaper to “persuade” the employee to resign.

However, this terrible behavior is considered to be power harassment, and all large companies now have ethics hotlines. Also, companies have to provide annual trainings on issues like this. So, I hope this practice is decreasing.

  • [Discussion] Anyone else wish that iOS has an opt-in feature for earthquake detection like android has?
  • I think this is something that is better provided by government. I think the question should be why doesn’t California have an early warning alert system similar to the likes of Japan, which will notify all cellphone and smartphone users in affected areas regardless of their brand of device?

  • Any unofficial YouTube clients?
  • I recommend a combination of the following Safari extensions: Stop the Madness Pro, UnTrap for YouTube, and SponsorBlock.

Total cost was about the same as one month of ad free YouTube. Works beautifully.

I can finally enjoy YouTube again after giving up jailbreaking.

Making some shortcuts retrains muscle memory. I set a dedicated tab in Safari just for YouTube so it doesn’t clutter up my regular browsing.

  • Thanks for the heads up. I rarely have a need for photoshop these days, but I grabbed the iPad only version of Affinity Photo just in case as it was so cheap in my region.

I’m sure it’ll get some use. Once or twice a year I try using a combination of smartphone apps to do some editing as I can’t be bothered dusting off my old slow laptop. So this will be cool. And it still runs on older hardware. iOS 15 is still supported!

  • I’m a dad of two. I really enjoyed the book “The Expectant Father” by Armin A Brott. It really helped me understand how I was feeling and what my wife was feeling and what she was going through, too. You can find a PDF online I’m sure if you don’t want to buy it.

    But anyway, congratulations!

Oh, and babies don’t need as many things as we imagine they do. So avoid buying everything you think you’ll need and just prepare the basics. You can buy things when you find out you need them. And don’t be afraid to buy used clothes etc. babies grow up super quickly.

  • Bicycles are frequently stolen here in Japan. I’ve experienced it myself.

The difference is that most bicycles are registered with the police and the police take theft seriously, so you’re likely to get it back.

Also, the majority of bicycles here have a dinky little lock attached to the frame over the rear wheel, so it is easy to lock in seconds.

Although the locks are not very strong, they decrease crimes of opportunity I would imagine. In fact the one time my bicycle was stolen it had been left unlocked.

  • Can I use a Broadlink RM4 (Pro) to learn IR codes AND store them somewhere I want? Would be amazing if the format can be transformed with IrScrutinizer too. (Using Home Assistant)
  • I have RM3 models and I use homebridge. The broadlink plugin works as you’d expect. Using the learn command, you then point the remote at the broadlink device and press the button you want to learn. The IR code (a long string) appears in the server log. Then you can copy and paste it to save it wherever you want. So in theory your idea is sound. But the official broadlink app won’t support revealing the codes.

  • iOS 17.5 Attention Aware bug

Has anyone else noticed that alarms and timers don’t reduce in volume if you are using the device, or when you pick up the device and it recognises you with Face ID anymore?

It’s really annoying to get a full volume alarm when you’re using the device.

iPhone 13 if it matters. Toggled attention aware on and off and also restarted the phone without luck.

  • Apple sales fall in nearly all markets
  • Yeah the (lack of) difference in price between generations is ridiculous. I just bought a 13 after using my 8 for six years.

The only difference between the 13 and 14 was once graphics core. So there was no way I was considering the 14.

But the 15 has USB C, which don’t get me wrong is great, but when you have a ton of lightning cables that will need to be replaced, it doesn’t seem like such a good idea (especially when family members are still using phones with lightning).

  • Conservatives in LDP lash out over same-sex marriage ruling
  • The politicians worry that same sex marriage will result in an even lower birth rate, which seems ridiculous! It’s not like those people are currently making babies. And they might consider surrogacy or other options if they were able to marry. So same sex marriage could actually increase the population.

  • [bug] viewing saved comments crashes the app

Hi there, thanks for the great software. Currently on 0.4.1 (4), but I’ve noticed the bug on a few previous versions.

When viewing saved comments under the user profile, everything appears fine. However, if you try to scroll it instantly crashes back to the springboard. I have a suspicion that it is something to do with the fact that I have saved many comments which include YouTube links. Has anyone else noticed this?

Edit: switched to another account to play around, and I could replicate the crash just by saving a comment which contained an embedded picture.

Denying same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, a Japanese high court says

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/13104054

A Japanese high court ruled Thursday that denying same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and called for urgent government action to address the lack of any law allowing for such unions.

The court does not have the power to overturn the current marriage law, which has been interpreted to restrict marriage as between a man and a woman. Government offices may continue to deny marriage status to same-sex couples unless the existing law is revised to include LGBTQ+ couples, or a new law is enacted that allows for other types of unions.

[bug] swiping back doesn’t honor text size

First, thank you for building this wonderful app.

This is my favorite feature of the app: the ability to return to the previous post by swiping from right to left.

With the latest TestFlight version, I noticed a new bug: the text size on the returning post is set to the system size, and once complete open, switches to the user’s choice of text size. The result is a little jarring.

To replicate, set the text time to something other than the system size. View a post, go back. And then swipe across to return to the post. You should be able to see the effect.

Suggestion: Thumbnails in the feed should have an overlay to indicate what kind of content they are

I love this app, and keep coming back to it after testing other apps, too.

However, I find myself tapping thumbnails which I think are images, which instead open another site. Maybe it is my way of browsing, but I have noticed that other apps I display the content type, which makes for a more desirable browsing experience for me at least. Is this something that is in the works?

How can I extract an IPA from my iPhone?

I have a hardware device which allows me to stream live free to air tv over my wifi network. The manufacturer has decided to retire to product and has removed the app from the AppStore!?

So, next time I get a new phone I’ll be screwed.

I am not jailbroken, and the last time I was was a while ago.

I have a windows pc, iPhone 8, and iPad Air 2 at my disposal. Both devices have the app in question installed.

Ideally, I would be able to download the IPA and move it to a new device without having to side load it. At this point in my life I don’t really have the time and patience to jailbreak.

Do you guys have any ideas?

    Not remembering default feed

I’ve got a bug that I haven’t been able to pin down. Set the default feed to subscriptions but sometimes upon launch (after killing the app) it is set to all. I haven’t been able to figure out what is causing it as it seems random. Has anyone else noticed this?

[bug] Fonts are odd sizes, missing sort by new

Thanks for the awesome update just now. I’m sorry, I haven’t gotten around to figuring out how to use GitHub. I hope this will get seen.

When not using the system font size, some parts are rendered in an odd size compared to before.

Also, I can’t find the sort by new option anymore.

Also, long post titles are making the compact view less compact (maybe due to the font issue).

On an unrelated note, my .world account still cannot enable notifications but my other ones can. It just hangs on the spinning progress wheel. I am not sure how to go about fixing it anymore.

I really appreciate all you have done. Also, there was no reason to apologise for taking a hiatus. This should be a project of passion not a job.

I hope I have not come across as demanding. I am loving what you guys are doing.

I’ll try to learn GitHub so I can post bugs in your preferred manner.

    Thank again!

    Shredded cheese recommendations?

    Inflation sucks!

In the last year, shredded “natural cheese” had almost doubled in price. The cheap alternatives branded as “97% cholesterol cut shred” are complete ass, and cannot even be legally called cheese.

I was used to paying ¥1,000/kg then ¥1,000/700g for shredded gouda (max value store brand), but now it is ¥1,000/600g cheddar/mozzarella mix.

I have a variety of supermarkets nearby. Also kaldi, Gyomu super, a-price etc. I just don’t want to have to keep buying 1kg bags when it is hit or miss. If you have any solid recommendations please post them here.

Im in Kyushu, but location isn’t important. Any leads are appreciated.

[bug] changing passwords on one account logged me out of all accounts

In an attempt to fix the push notifications not working, I changed the password for one account via safari. Upon opening the app again it said all of my session tokens were invalid.

Not a big deal but kind of funny since the server instances were different.

What did you learn in Japan this past week?

Let’s kick up the participation in this community with some general discussion.

So, what interesting tidbit did you come across this week?

Kind of random, but I learned that bull bars on vehicles we banned in the late 90’s for safety reasons.
