A modern use case: I like RSS in my terminal so I use newsboat but hate it opening firefox and swapping me out of the terminal when I want to read more. So I have it use lynx instead.
I also have a computer without a DE that can browse the web (lynx), look at pictures (JP2a), watch movies (I don't recall the name of the program but it converts the video to ASCII), edit word docs (take your pick), and send email (mail).
Invidious, newpipe, and freetube are really just alternative front ends for youtube.
