Why all of a sudden tech companies are not being favorable to their users?
  • I don't think reddit started out as a for profit company. iirc it started as some dudes sharing links. I knew a site like that back in the day. Link aggregator and forum made by one dude because he liked the community.

  • PSA: Lemmy.ml is not Lemmy
  • Oh they're absolutely tankies, dessalines website is crystal clear on that. To me this is simply a test of the fediverse. If it works as intended, the devs political orientation shouldn't matter. We'll see.

  • Almost broke 2.5 million daily total users on Lemmy in the last 24 hours.
  • It seems that those of us who look beyond the hype are a minority. Lemmy has potential but also serious problems. Bots are an obvious one, meta and co invading sooner or later is another. Tankies are something that we need to keep talking about and keep an eye on any politically influenced moderating, esp. on lemmy.ml

  • Scicomm.xyz admin explains why their Mastodon instance is proactively defederating from Meta's Threads
  • Indeed. Email is a good analogy to explain the federation principle, not to argue about the finer details. But going along with it, spam email is being blocked. Whole IP ranges are blocked ("defederated") by spam filters, because otherwise, good grief...

  • Scicomm.xyz admin explains why their Mastodon instance is proactively defederating from Meta's Threads
  • We absolutely do not need meta. The fediverse is doing just fine. There must be exactly zero tolerance for their likes. Nothing, absolutely nothing good can come from meta if you have been paying any attention at all. They do not benefit users, they milk them.

    As the saying goes...

KILL IT BEFORE IT LAYS EGGS

  • How do pre-reddit influx lemmy members feel?
  • This is worse than sycophants making excuses for Huffman. Dessalines compiled this list to make an argument, how are you sweet talking this reality? This isn't some exercise in political science, this is a dude making the point that the Uyghur genocide is not happening. There is no discussion with such an entity. There are many subtleties to be discussed about any of these topics, but once you're in that level of conspiracy, there's no subtlety, this has nothing to do with critical thinking or questioning authority. This is blatant arrogant vile brainwashed shit, and nothing else. The result you will find in Lemmygrad.ml. Study this instance closely and strive to not become that. Free speech does NOT mean hatespeech should be tolerated. By being neutral you are supporting the wrong side. Inaction is action. Let me put it this way: when two Nazis sit down on a table with eight other people and these people say nothing, there are ten Nazis sitting on that table.

  • How do pre-reddit influx lemmy members feel?
  • Conspiracy? One of the devs has a website where he literally openly denies the Uyghur genocide, Tiananmen square massacre, "Mao did nothing wrong", "Ukrainians are Nazis", denies every single critique of USSR and China, and a whole lot of other vile shit. Read for yourself: https://github.com/dessalines/essays/blob/master/socialism_faq.md#did-mao-kill-millions-of-people

This is the real test of the fediverse. Can software written by a piece of shit like that exist without being influenced by their garbage political views?

I think it's possible and I like Lemmy to thrive but it's important to keep an eye out for tankies and to not close your eyes to the reality of who started this.

  • Was the lemmyverse/threadiverse aware that Mastodon has been convulsed for the past 2 days?
  • While that is true, I anticipate that as a user you can choose to block all of that, just like I could have a reddit experience without r/conservative and without ads. We will always be able to find our niches, the size of which is determined by how many people share your values.

That being said, it's indeed up to us to make sure the largest communities don't end up on some weird fork that has ads.

  • Can no longer post. What happened?

I'm using Jerboa and while I was able to comment initially, it first started saying "deleted" immediately after posting and now it says "language_not_allowed" and the comment is gone, irrespective of content. What's up with that?

    Filtering out posts/comments by keywords?

Without that level control over my feed, I'll probably go back to the other place. I thought self-determination is part of the fediverse mission, but so far that is much easier on reddit. Is that feature in planning for any of the major hubs (kbin/lemmy/beehaw)?

How can I block all Lemmygrad content? As a user can I block an instance? Are there instances that already block them?

Yes, so I want to browse all but actually control the content, block instances, block keywords, etc... currently using Jerboa, but not married to it.
