Fuck up a book for me please
  • Thaaaaat's different, eh? Nobody should be opposed to someone writing new works from scratch, even if they are inspired by something else. People do that all the time and should keep doing that.

I'm just opposed to letting software (controlled by people who don't expose their intentions and pretend it's all automated with the best intentions) re-write either Romeo & Juliet or West Side Story, for any purpose, including to assist people.

  • Fuck up a book for me please
  • I think we can help people who need help without re-writing classic novels. Who are you thinking would be benefited by this? I wonder if I could suggest some other technology or approach which does help them without rewriting an author's works.

  • Fuck up a book for me please
  • Oh Ann, you rainbow-infused space unicorn. If we allow this now, what's to stop them from completely rewriting every classic work of fiction to fit their worldview?

I say no re-writing should be allowed. Learn to read, people and learn to love doing it.

  • The Tour de France Explained
  • To add, this is my favorite story on that list:

Sean Kelly of Ireland was described in Willy Voet's book 'Massacre à la Chaine': He won the Tour of Lombardy three times (1983, 1985, 1991 (also won amateur version in 1976)) and on at least one occasion he did it with the help of a corticoide injection. Kelly was controlled positive after Paris–Brussels in 1984 and that came as a surprise because he used the urine of a mechanic. But the mechanic was using a banned substance himself because he had to work long hours at night and needed the lift to stay awake."

  • What are the unwritten rules of the Tour de France?
  • The final stage should have no impact on the overall classification. But this year it will as it’s a TT in Nice, not a stroll down the Champs, so it will!

This! Can't wait to see how this affects the last few stages.

  • The Tour de France Explained
  • Yes, I think (though I have no list handy). But to your point, some sort of enhancement has been used in pro cycling for most of its history.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doping_cases_in_cycling

Notice how that list shows fewer hits in the last few years? I would like to believe the sport is getting better at catching cheaters, but I have no proof of that.

  • What are the unwritten rules of the Tour de France?

I remember asking this years ago on r***** but I'll ask again because I think this is a fun topic. Every sport has them - what are the unwritten rules of pro cycling?

Any answer would be great, but I also want to ask about something I just saw. Is there a rule among cyclists about intermediate sprints that you can try for points, but not very hard? I see mid-range pushing at these things and I always wonder why at least one rider doesn't just go all out to get the points.

The Breeders - Live in Big Sur

Just posted today, recorded last year.

    > Last fall at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur our show was rained out. The sky cleared just as dusk fell & someone said: let’s go into the forest. So in a grove of redwoods we played a few songs for the hermit thrushes and spotted owls. Thank you Mark Satterthwaite & crew for filming it.

I loved them before and I love them now.

Essential Guided By Voices Albums - Bandcamp

    > As Guided by Voices’ resident mad scientist, Robert Pollard churns out songs at a rate that makes the speed of light seem slothful. From homegrown four-track fuzzfests to comparatively high-tech stints with famous producers, GBV’s dozens-strong discography defies easy listening. With Pollard as the only constant, the Dayton band toiled in ‘80s indie rock’s sub-basement obscurity before emerging as the surrealist kings of lo-fi land in the mid ‘90s.

    > Today, they’re a scrappy but stalwart alt-rock institution. At each album’s core are Pollard’s delirious dream-logic lyrics and miniaturist mania, with songs sometimes ending after a single verse. “I’ve tried to write epics, but I’ve got a short attention span from working with kids for 14 years,” the former schoolteacher told SPIN.

It's Propeller, right? The best GBV album? Yeah, OK.

    Two definitions of self hosted

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on this.

I realized recently there are two common types of Self Hosters here.

    1. I work in IT and host some services for my employer so we don't have to rely on the big tech companies, for economic or other reasons.

    2. I self host some services at home or on a VPS, as a hobby or for other reasons, but nobody pays me to do that.

The answers people provide seem to vary greatly based on whether the commenter is in the #1 or #2 camp. I myself have gotten answers along the lines of, "why aren't you acting more like a paid IT person?" and it's a little off-putting.

How to resolve this? Could we refer to one group or the other differently?

Maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of this than is warranted and I'm the only one confused?

If nothing else, I will call out my hobby status from now on when posting/commenting here.

Edited to add: TIL. I'll use these terms carefully in the future. Thanks!
