Small dogs are a big problem for posties, as Australia Post reports over 55 attacks a week
  • This is why many of our packages weren't delivered. We have a low front gate with a latch, and we have had many parcels taken to the post office without a delivery attempt.

After calling aupost for the umpteenth time, they have told me that their drivers have been instructed to not enter any sort of gate because of dog attacks, unless they know the house and that there is not a dog.

The second line of our address for everything now says "NO DOGS! Thank you!" and since doing that no problems.

  • Microsoft removes Copilot app ‘incorrectly’ added on Windows PCs
  • People have commented that it's crazy that I have completely disabled all updates on my win10 machine. This sort of thing is why.

Edit: I haven't had a virus or malware since... I was a teenager. It seems like if you use an adblocker, don't click links from unknown sources, and are aware of your network activity, you are pretty safe. The writing is on the wall, I am aware that I will need to switch to Linux soon, but I am also aware that Linux has compatibility issues with my particular machine and doesn't work with certain activities I like to do. I am hoping these issues will be mostly sorted by the time I make the leap.

  • Budget green light for Gympie Road bypass tunnel to move to next stage
  • Ugh, yeah. We live close to and commute along Gympie Rd.

The construction along the Kedron section has traffic slowed at all hours of the day and night, exacerbating an already obvious issue with those living in the Northern Suburbs being forced to commute along a road that has houses and schools on it.

A North/South highway is needed - not another toll road.

Especially since these toll roads are sold on the promise of "It's only a toll for x years, then it will be free!" only they have all made back what they cost to build and more, some many times over.

Many have been sold to a private corporation with no plans to make good on the original promises.

  • Microsoft to test “new features and more” for aging, stubbornly popular Windows 10
  • I know, just today on my lemmy home page was a w10 user who had their desktop background image changed and the stupid search bar added to their task bar again after an update. This is why I don't allow my machine to update. It's rediculous!

Linux will be so much better, but it will require some effort and time, and probably some help. I will have to get there, and once I do I know it will be a relief to have an OS that only does what I tell it to!

Thank you for the kind wishes stranger. I wish you health and happiness as well. I am sure you will see me again after I have made the leap, with some silly question or another. :)

  • Microsoft to test “new features and more” for aging, stubbornly popular Windows 10
  • I am the user above, and the writing is on the wall - I am aware that I will need to switch to Linux when I can no longer make w10 work for me, or when it is no longer supported by the games and programs I use.

The reasons why I don't switch now are more complicated. I use a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 as my daily driver, as I was in an accident and can no longer sit at my desk with the pc I built. This laptop is on a rolling desk over my bed.

Anyway, while some Lenovo laptops support Linux, this one does not, and my reading tells me that I may have difficulty with certain things. I may have trouble with drivers for the graphics card, I may have trouble with adjusting the monitor brightness or the second monitor, I may have trouble with sound. or even the keyboard.

There are github pages devoted to helping with utilities to fix many of these problems, but they definitely require troubleshooting, thinking, and planning.

I have also had a friend who recently switched to Linux, who tried to stream a game for me. Before he switched his streams were flawless, this time we spent a while figuring out how to get his game audio, then the stream quality was abysmal, freezing, and in the wrong resolution, so he played while I googled solutions he could try on the fly.

Streaming games through discord on Linux is apparently a whole thing. That more than anything keeps me on win10, because I cannot play most of the games I used to play, they require too much movement, so my husband or friends will stream for me.

I am hoping things become easier as more users join Linux before me.

This is all a long winded explanation that I am sure you didn't ask for, but I just wanted to let you know that sometimes even people with a somewhat good grasp of tech have reasons keeping them from switching.

  • California comedown: how illicit cannabis farms have left a wilderness where ‘you’re lucky to see a lizard’
  • This is less a problem with legalizing marijuana, and more a problem with a pharmaceutical medicine not having proven origins and certifications. If a pharmacy sold other medications without proof of origin and certification they would be shut down.

  • I went down the rabbit hole and tried to type out the youtube links he posted, here is what I found:

Video of Mattias Desmet: https://youtu.be/Egq5Y0taok4 A professor in Belgium who has published books spouting nonsense about mass mind control which have been debunked as pseudo science by his peers, went on American talk shows comparing Biden to Hitler, and is an avid covid denier. His duties as professor were reduced in 2023 after admitting he lied on the talk show, and after students publicly testified that his courses included his conspiracy theory book as the only required reading material, telling students they must repeat his opinions in order to pass the class. My curiosity is now sated, and my youtube and search history is now contaminated.

  • I just wanted some insights from other fathers...
  • Ugh. Remember when you could search for a video on youtube and it was just a page full of results? I remember.

I had this same issue recently when I searched for something innocuous (ways to put up my long hair in a bun) and was served clickbait shock videos of anorexic women and other nonsense.

You are getting plenty of amazing advice on fathering from other dads here, but I wanted to pop in with a suggestion regarding youtube.

After that last interaction with youtube I ended up down the rabbit hole looking for a fix. I tried a few browser addons but none seemed to work properly, but then I heard about youtube front ends.

    This one is "invidious"

    And this one is "piped"

In both you connect to an "instance" like lemmy does, which can impact their performance. I haven't chosen my favourite yet, invidious seems to perform better sometimes, but I like the ui of piped.

Congratulations to you and your growing family. <3

Edit: Here is a bonus screengrab with your search terms, there is still a lot of "how to have a boy" stuff, but some videos with general advice, being supportive, and fertility in general.

YSK you can use Imagus or any hover to zoom addon to quickly view images and gifs on your Lemmy front page

Why YSK: It makes viewing images fast and easy, with no clicks.

I got used to this on the site that shall not be named, sometimes I don't want to open the whole image or post. With the addon if I hover over the image button that would expand the image, it will show the image full size for as long as I hover over it, no clicking needed, this works with gifs as well.
