Thus, Docker was born.
"Works on my machine, ship the machine."
Maintenance complete!
All of the primary Lemmy services have been updated as part of this maintenance.
PosgreSQL database: 15 -> 16 pict-rs image repository: 0.4 -> 0.5 Lemmy: 0.19.3 -> 0.19.5
Also, as part of the migration, the pict-rs image repository's backend has been migrated from its internal sled-repo database to the shared PostgreSQL database, which will simplify backup and recovery in the future.
Please report any issues on this post or a new post in [email protected].
Thanks for your patience as we work to improve your Lemmy experience.
Maintenance downtime Saturday 9 August, 4PM UTC
We'll be taking the instance down for maintenance at 4PM UTC on Saturday 9 August. Use this to convert to your local time.
The instance will be upgraded to Lemmy 0.19.5, which requires upgrading several other services Lemmy relies on.
The maintenance window will be 5 hours
Just now seeing this, sorry.
I'm not sure why the instance would struggle with this, it's running on a modern i7 with plenty of RAM and an NVMe solid state drive.
The only thing I can think of is that Lemmy's blocklist import functionality is incredibly unoptimized. I would suggest breaking the blocklist up into smaller chunks and trying to import them individually, if you can.
Apologies! The host machine was having networking issues early this morning. Everything should be resolved now, and the federation queue should be catching up. This may take some time, given I'm not entirely sure how long the issues were happening. I'm going to be keeping a closer eye on things for the next day or so.
Again, apologies for the inconvenience.
IIRC, Samsung recently announced they're moving to A/B partitioning as well.
The Twitter thread says that the website with the linked keys is a fake imposter site. Not sure how true that is, but if so, that's fucked.
Honestly, it's probably not worth the hassle to try to install system apps elsewhere. Steam and Lutris, on the other hand, can put games on any mounted drive. Install them as normal, and then in Steam, set up a steam library in /Apps
. In Lutris, you should have the option to choose where each game is installed each time you install one.
Maintenance unsuccessful, yet complete
We ran into some unexpected issues upgrading the instance to the latest Lemmy version, and troubleshooting was starting to take too long and extend past the previously given maintenance window. As such, we decided to restore from backup and attempt the upgrade again another day, next time with a larger maintenance window.
Everything should be back as it was before the downtime. The next maintenance will be announced soon.
Thanks for your patience!
Correct. Unfortunately, it's something that each desktop environment or window manager has to implement themselves. But all the button is doing is moving some config files around, so you can probably do some digging to figure out what it's copying to where.
This is the system settings application for the KDE desktop environment.
Literally yes. And you don't even need to know the exact pixel resolution of the TV.
Edit: Here are the problems with you "Wayland isn't good enough" people.
First, you don't use Wayland, so you don't even know if it's fixed whatever weird issue you encountered with it before or if it supports a niche use case, for example.
Second, Wayland won't get good enough for you until you start using it and reporting bugs. You think X11 was a bed of roses when it first started? Or do you think they bumped the version number 11 times for fun?
Not sure if you're a troll, but if you're serious, nothing I say is going to change your mind, so I won't bother.
If you're using Wayland, you can go to Settings -> Colors & Themes -> Login Screen (SDDM) and click "Apply Plasma Settings..."
If you're using X11, it looks like you'll have to resort to hacky scripts, unfortunately.

I played 10 or so hours of base SMTV and really enjoyed it, but I definitely felt like it was hampered by the choice of platform, which turned me off. Tons of FPS drops and performance issues. I'm hoping SMTV:V is at least Gold rated for Steam Deck so that I still have the portability aspect.
I played through SMTIV a few years ago and have SMTIV:A, but never touched it. Is it different enough to check out, or should I just stick to SMTV:V?
Same! Senior dev here with both dyscalculia and dysgraphia. Numbers literally transpose for me, for example when I'm filling out a restaurant receipt and calculating tip+total. It's wild.

I'm curious, my playthroughs of both the original and the remake were so long ago - but does D-pad movement buy the player anything? I agree it's rather silly that it's not an option, but I don't remember being hampered by the control scheme in any way.
I believe you can thank Taylor Hawkins for that. I know he was her tour drummer, but I'm pretty sure he wrote drum parts during his time with her, as well.
Oh nice! I just use Lutris, but options are always good.
So that file can go anywhere you want, but ~/bin
is a good spot (or ~/.bin
if you like a tidy home folder). You can name it whatever you want, but I'd personally name it steam.sh
. And then in the Buddy settings, use that file as your new Steam binary.
What issues are you having? I may be able to help.
There's a host app that runs on the host machine alongside Sunshine that reads your Steam library, and the Deck plugin adds an icon on each game's banner on your Deck. When you click the icon, the plugin communicates with the host app and then automatically starts a Moonlight/Sunshine session that then starts up the game you were on. You only have to add one "app" to Sunshine and set up the MoonDeckBuddy app on the host, and then you have streaming for your entire library available.
MoonDeck is awesome!
A plugin that makes it easier to manage your gamestream sessions from the SteamDeck. - FrogTheFrog/moondeck
I found MoonDeck while perusing the Decky plugin store and it's absolutely awesome. I've had Moonlight and Sunshine set up for a while because Steam streaming is very inconsistent between Deck and Linux, but I didn't use it often because it's a pain setting up launchers in Sunshine for each individual game. MoonDeck takes the hassle out of that completely, and I find myself streaming GPU-intensive games to my living room much more often nowadays.
I highly recommend it!
I disagree, it's a statement of fact. There's nothing inherently wrong with that fact that you're lazy about fiddling with computers. I'm lazy about certain things in my own life.
But it's pointless trying to convert lazy people to Linux when it requires an effort level above 0 and they don't want to put in anymore than that.

0.19.1 to 0.19.2 Upgrade: We are currently being affected by some kind of bug
Requirements Is this a bug report? For questions or discussions use https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy_support Did you check to see if this issue already exists? Is this only a single bug? Do not put multipl...
Not entirely sure what happened, but a routine backend upgrade from Lemmy 0.19.1 to 0.19.2 is causing issues with the past 3ish weeks of activity. The linked bug report has a bit more detail.
I'm going to try to work with the devs to figure out exactly what happened and do my best to recover that activity.
GBA core with RTC?
I've searched around, but the only GBA core that seems to exist is spiritualized's, which doesn't have RTC support and hasn't had a release in over a year. I was actually under the impression that RTC support in cores wasn't possible, but then budude2 just released his GB/GBC core that does have RTC support. So now I'm wondering if it's possible for GBA.
I ask because I play a ton of Pokemon ROM hacks that take advantage of time changes, and it would be nice to have some of the core features of the Pocket. For example, sleep/wake doesn't work for Everdrives, and save states / memories are iffy.
Maintenance complete!
The storage backend for the instance has been upgraded, which means the instance should be faster by quite a bit. It also enables a few new data resiliency features, which is pretty cool. Hopefully we don't need them, but better safe than sorry!
Please report any issues on this post or a new post in [email protected].

Maintenance downtime Friday 22 Dec, 6PM UTC
We'll be taking the instance down for maintenance at 6PM UTC on Friday, 22 Dec. Use this to convert to your local time.
This maintenance is due to a much-needed storage upgrade, which will hopefully speed up the instance quite a bit. The maintenance window will be 3 hours to account for full system backup and restore, but I'm hoping we'll be done quicker than that.
Now running Lemmy 0.19
We are now running Lemmy 0.19! There were a lot of cool changes in this release, definitely check out the release notes if you're interested in the specifics.
The important ones for users are:
-
Improved Post Ranking - Scaled sort! This is similar to Reddit's Hot sort, that is, ranking is based on the proportion of votes to active users, not just votes. This will greatly improve visibility for small communities, which is great!
-
Instance Blocking for Users - Users can now block entire instances themselves. If there's an instance you personally dislike but doesn't technically break our instance rules, you're now free to block it yourself.
-
Two Factor Rework - Enabling 2FA is now a two-step process, so it's harder to lock yourself out.
There may be breakage depending on what Lemmy client you use, so be sure your client supports the breaking changes in 0.19.
lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz - well-maintained self-hosted instance
No local content, but we run several seeder scripts to keep the All feed nice and populated. Sensible rules, minimal censorship, and we're even guaranteed on Fediseer! We also host the alternative front-end Photon at https://photon.frozeninferno.xyz.
Come hang out and lurk, or make the next hit community, whatever you like! Just be sure to fully read the application question when registering, we deny all applications that don't follow instructions.

Implementing defederation lists from Fediseer
In the interest of transparency, we're announcing the implementation of defed list synchronization from Fediseer.
Fediseer is a community of fediverse instances that work together to crowdsource classification of both safe and harmful fediverse instances. This instance has just recently been "guaranteed", which means a member of the Fediseer community has sponsored us to join them. You can see details of our Fediseer presence here.
This enables a couple of things.
- This instance's admins can now guarantee, endorse, or censure other instances.
- We can implement block list synchronization with our endorsed instances.
- Block list synchronization can be filtered by tags.
Given this instance's stance towards censorship, we've been hesitant to implement block list synchronization, as we don't want to block an instance prematurely. However, given the recent influx of loli / pedo content creeping in, we feel it's in the best interest of this instance to at least synchronize blocking by loli and pedo tags.
So going forward, we will sync block lists with our endorsed instances' block lists filtered by loli and pedo tags. We'll also include spam tags, since there's been an influx of that, too.
As always, comments and questions welcome.
Maintenance downtime Monday 23 Oct, 5PM UTC
We'll be taking the server down for general maintenance at 5PM UTC on Monday, 23 Oct. Shouldn't last more than an hour.

Defederating from burggit.moe and a rules update
Hey All,
First point of business, we're defederating from burggit.moe effectively immediately. I'm currently purging all burggit.moe communities, but if I miss one, please report it. The reason is closely tied to the second point of business.
Second point of business, I never thought we'd have to do this, but we've added a 6th rule: No loli / pedo shit. Pretty self-explanatory and straightforward. We don't care if it's "technically" legal, we're not hosting it. I don't even know if it's actually legal where the server is physically located, and I'm not putting that in my search history.
Again, we're staunchly against almost all types of censorship, but if that's the kind of material you're after, we have to ask you to look for it on another instance.
Now hosting Photon, an alternative UI for Lemmy!
We are now hosting Photon at https://photon.frozeninferno.xyz! I've personally used a few different alternative front ends for Lemmy, but this is the first one I liked enough to host myself. Please feel free to leave any feedback here, and enjoy!
P.S. If you don't like Photon, the default Lemmy UI is still available at https://lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz as always. :)
P.P.S. If you want a wider interface (for desktop, for example), go into settings in the top right and disable Limit Layout Width.
Defederating from rqd2.net
I received a user report of (text) pedophilia on a post from rqd2.net. I considered banning the user, but after further investigation, much of that entire instance is dedicated to similar content. As such, I've decided to defederate from the instance.
As much as I dislike censorship and want users to be able to decide for themselves what they do or don't see, I don't feel comfortable hosting or providing access to content like that.
Edit: I'm also in the process of purging all rqd2.net communities from this instance. If I miss one, please report it.
