Oh boy here we go
  • I'm not a conspiracy theorist in the least, but the fact that some random guy in the crowd saw the shooter on the roof but not one of the many Secret Service agents there noticed a sniper has me at least open to the idea that it was fake. It's not like Trump's team don't know that plenty of Republicans are just looking for an excuse to violently support their dear leader.

But I agree that it's more likely that someone just snapped.

  • Sovcit has a problem.
  • It's not the only reason, just the first and easiest. Also, they can say they're not citizens all day, but unless they legally revoke it (expensive and difficult without dual citizenship because no one wants to deal with a stateless person), the Department of State knows they are. They think that they're citizens of the state in which they were born, and they want the passport American Samoans get, which is for American nationals, not citizens. They pretty much take real things that exist and try to twist them into whatever alternate reality they're living in.

As for the birth certificate, I'm 99% sure what that means is that they requested an apostille. It's basically a certificate signed by the (state level) secretary of state saying the document is authentic that's attached to certain legal documents. It's required by certain countries, so I'm assuming they said they need it for a non-Hague country and they think that does something a lot more interesting than just saying it's a real birth certificate.

  • Sovcit has a problem.
  • I mean, that probably IS why they were denied. Anyone in arrears more than $2500 receives an initial letter saying to fix it within 90 days, and if they don't, they get denied. In the state I live in, they don't release the passport until the full balance is paid off. Other states might make payment plans. The venn diagram of sovcits and people who owe back support has a decent amount of overlap, so it wouldn't be at all surprising if this person owes.

The Dept of State would normally either send them a regular ass passport, or a letter saying, "Your sovcit nonsense is nonsense, you can either get a regular ass passport, or we're keeping your money and you get nothing," but no point in that since this moron is probably not going to pay their past due support anyway.

  • Foods that don't have to be refrigerated/heated?
  • I'm driving, so weight isn't a huge concern. I don't know why I didn't think about stuff for backpacking - that's a great idea. Probably because the closest I get to hiking these days is the trail behind my house.

  • Lauren Boebert clocked at 19 mph over speed limit and now faces court date: report
  • In the mountains? Yeah. That's dangerous anywhere, but there are plenty of places on I-70 where that can get you killed real quick. Lots of curves and steep drop-offs. Not to mention that not paying the ticket is just another example of her being a dumbass who thinks the rules don't apply to her.

  • Foods that don't have to be refrigerated/heated?

I'm going to a conference next week and while they asked everyone for dietary preferences, I don't have high hopes based on experience (sure, I'd love another "salad" that's just iceberg with no dressing!), so I'm trying to plan ahead and bring some things with me so I don't starve. Unfortunately, the hotel room doesn't have a microwave, just a mini-mini-fridge and I'm bringing my small kettle, so I mostly have to stick to things that can be stored/eaten at room temp, or prepared with just hot water. So far, I have some soy curl jerky to take to long sessions, a couple of ramen bowls, and some bread and packets of almond butter, but I'm kind of out of ideas. There is a Trader Joe's within walking distance, so I can at least grab some fruit or salad when I get a chance, but is there anything else I'm not thinking of that I should pack and/or plan to buy? The conference is a full week, so I'd prefer not to eat crap (like the ramen) the whole time if I can help it.

Etsy loses its “handmade” and “vintage” labels as it takes on Temu and Amazon
  • Sometimes I get curious when I see the exact same item sold by a bunch of different sellers and I see how long it takes me to find it on Ali Express, or to find the original product they all stole the pictures from. Etsy has sucked for a long time.

  • 70%
  • That goes along with apathy, I think. Being an informed voter takes effort, and an unfortunate number of people don't make it. I knew that was happening and was appalled, and a lot of people on Lemmy knew, but for plenty of voters, they just knew the names and saw some ads and said good enough.

People always say Democrats are worse at messaging than Republicans (though it's arguably a lot easier to get the message of, "vote for me, I'll hurt people you hate," across than it is to communicate actual policies), but I'm not sure progressives are that great at it either. There's a lot of internal division and impatience with anyone who isn't immediately on board 100%, and it's off-putting. I'm not immune to those things by any means, so I understand the impulse, but it's probably not the best way to attract voters.

  • Pastor Robert Morris’ lawyer blamed a 12-year-old girl for initiating sexual contact
  • But didn't you know that if a child initiates sexual behavior with an adult, the adult has to participate? What other choice could they possibly have? /s

God, it made me sick to even type that out. If a 12 year old was trying anything even remotely sexual toward me, I'd shut that shit down immediately and I'd be extremely concerned about whether they were safe. Because I'm a normal adult, unlike this sick fuck. What really infuriates me is that they think this will sway people to his side, and even worse is that it'll work on some people. I hate everything about that.

Also, to be clear, I don't believe him for a second. She almost certainly didn't initiate a damn thing.

  • Step one is that people need to show up for more than just presidential elections. The only way to move left at a national level is to show the establishment that progressive candidates are winning in local and state races and it's more than just a couple of them here or there. Get more progressives in the kind of offices that can set them up to be governors and senators - those are the people who generally end up as president. There's no overnight solution, which is what a lot of people seem to expect.

Buuuut voter turnout in non-presidential election years sucks, and it's even worse outside of midterms. I don't know how to solve that part. I've voted in every single election I could since I turned 18, and I don't understand the complete lack of engagement. I know how to solve the things that prevent willing voters from doing it, but I don't know how we fix apathy.

  • What age to people begin to like colors?
  • I always did, but I pretended like I was above it for a long time. I think it felt uncool to care about that kind of thing? I don't know, I was insecure. Now that I've run out of fucks, my house is really colorful and I love it. Beige everything makes me wish for the sweet release of death. Depending on how old your kids are, they might be going through a similar phase, and maybe they'll outgrow it too.

  • Project 2025 was supposed to boost Donald Trump's campaign — but now it may be backfiring
  • The backfiring isn't because Republicans are upset about it. It's because other people are finding out about it and are rightly horrified. It may (hopefully) convince more people to vote that might have stayed home otherwise.

  • Costco’s contributions
  • The guy in the picture is Ben Carson, not someone from Costco. I can't tell if the caption is implying that Costco gave Ben Carson money or if they're just using him as a stand in for giving Trump money.

  • House Democrat is proposing a constitutional amendment to reverse Supreme Court's immunity decision
  • What we need is for a Democratic president to do something bananas and claim immunity. I bet at least the less crazy Republicans would suddenly see how that could be a problem. Maybe if Joe set one of the conservative justices on fire as an official act.

But seriously, they have no problem with hypocrisy so that probably still wouldn't help.

  • Now taking suggestions on what to do with soy curls

Finally sprung for the 12lb bag because we love these things. I usually make buffalo soy curls and throw them on a salad or mac and cheese, or make lemon "chicken" orzo with them, but I'm open to other suggestions from anyone else who likes them since I have enough for about the next decade.

I looked up the ones he shows in the video and basically all of them are the equivalent of 30 year old participation trophies. He's posted the video on every city fb post for days, and he calls volunteering slavery every chance he gets. There's a reason his own political party disavowed him a couple of years ago.

    InsanePeopleFacebook frickineh

This is somehow one of his saner posts

This guy has been running for local office and losing every election cycle for years. His latest thing is that he is a victim the same way George Floyd was because DEI has made it hard to be a white man, I guess?

For the record, his "wife" literally left the country over a decade ago and I think his son has also moved to her country. The last picture he has with them is easily 15 years ago, so I don't think they really give a shit if anyone votes for him. Oh, also, they're Asian so he regularly refers to himself as a "person/father of color."

    How to choose a model?

I don't do much handheld gaming, but I'm going to have some overseas flights and long-ish train rides later this year, and may also be having surgery that will keep me fairly bedbound for about a month. I'm just not sure how much money it's worth spending on a deck that I likely won't use much outside of those specific cases - I bought a switch when I got covid in 2020 and used it a ton at the time but I've only used it a few times since, though I miiight use a deck a bit more just because I already have a pretty extensive steam library.

Is it better to stick to the cheapest model or is there enough of a difference that it might be worth spending a little more for a nicer one?

    Getting wild on NYE

This is one of the first kits I got really excited about and I finally grabbed it on Black Friday. I've never done buttonhole stitch and it's a lot of fun now that I have the hang of it. It's a party at my house, as you can see.

Yeah, definitely don't put any of those profits toward a living wage though. Make your employees trauma dump for the chance at a few extra bucks! Probably comes as an Amazon gift card, too.

    Considering calling this one finished

I don't know how to cross stitch (and did absolutely zero research before starting this kit), but this is a mood, especially after I realized I miscounted and put the s one space off and now have to pull it back out.

Well...mostly. I need to fill in a couple of gaps on the bear, but I lost my mind and decided to try to finish a whole new pattern by 10/1 so I'll have to worry about that later. I'm overall really happy with how both came out. I can see mistakes up close, but I think from a distance, they're both nice. Also, this was before ironing both, please disregard any wonky satin stitch - the thread moves when I wash off the pattern.
