How should I do backups?
  • As mentioned already, Hetzner is a very big Hoster in Germany. I am a customer since nearly 15 years now and in all that time they also rised the prices only once for the package I use (and I think it was only recently in 2023 or so where it went from 4,90€ to 5,39€). Also their Storage Box seems to be not only one of the cheapest out there I have seen, but as far as I remember, you do not have to pay for the traffic if you want to restore your data, like it is with other hosters. Also they had a good service, were responsive if I opened a Ticket in the past and I can not remember if I had ever problems with the service I use (Web Hosting package).

  • What to do with a Z69 Android Box?
  • I always have the feeling I should know k8s more, although I am sure I do not need it. Can you mix Architectures in k8s Clusters? Like my Homelab (x64) has the Pi-Hole and the Z69 Box (ARM) takes over with a standby Pi-Hole if the homelab goes down? Or do k8s Clusters need to be uniform regarding CPU architecture?

  • What to do with a Z69 Android Box?
  • Haha :-) I was seriously considering hosting my own KBin or Lemmy Instance on my Homelab for a bit, but then I figured it would be just for fun (which is not a bad thing) and will just consume electricity and space for something I use once or twice a day and I use almost exclusively alone. So it won't even contribute to the community. I am not even sure if it would be fast enough, but that sounds like a nice Sunday afternoon project to just prove that it works (or doesn't) for fun :-)

  • What to do with a Z69 Android Box?
  • That's a good Idea too. If I find nothing else, before it sits here any longer, I will ask around my friends and colleagues and ultimately it will go to a thriftstore. I do not like to throw away stuff that still works, so this is a really good idea. Thank you :-)

  • What to do with a Z69 Android Box?
  • Hmm... Smart Mirror like Magic Mirror? It's the first time I hear this... looks really interesting! I will look into this. I always wondered where to put a panel you easily see, but is not intrusive to show some information you should know for the upcoming day... Smart Mirrors sounds like they tick all the boxes!

  • What to do with a Z69 Android Box?
  • It could have been a cheap entry into the Z* topic, that is why I asked specifically for those 2. I have no real need currently for Z* devices at the moment, but I am curious and might start with a USB dongle in the future... but that one then can go directly into my Homelab anyway. Thanks for the suggestion :-)

  • What to do with a Z69 Android Box?
  • That is what I did until recently with my other Box that has an AMD T40E... but then it had to run Nextcloud that I wanted to move from an external hoster to my Home and it was just too slow to be usable. So my Homelab (just a MiniPC) has to run anyway 24/7 for the family and it has all the other Containers as well. To save a bit of power on that one, the Minecraft Server (that even in idle consumes quite some CPU cycles) can be turned on / off by the family via a button in Home Assistant :-)

  • What to do with a Z69 Android Box?

I have a spare Z69 4K Android TV box here and no use for it at the moment. It served for a few years as exactly what is was sold for, later I flashed Kodi on it for a while and after that it served as a WFH RDP Client for another while with Armbian flashed on it.

The box has a S909X SoC, 3 GB RAM and 32 GB Flash, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, LAN, USB and HDMI.

I have a homelab already and I wondered if I could use it as a Zwave or Zigbee gateway maybe. But this does not seem to be possible in "software" only. I thought because we have overlaps in Frequencies between WiFi and Zwave (\860/\900 MHz range) and Zigbee (2.4 GHz range) it might be possible on Software, but I was not able to find such projects.

So I wonder... if you had this thing sitting around being useless, do you have any clever ideas what you would use it for? It would be sad to scrap it since it is working fine.

Not all of my renown was carried over to the season

    Hi there,

I just finished the campain and started a season character right after that. But somehow only part of my renown got carried over. I had over 2.000 in the fractured peaks, but in my new seasonal character, I have around 400 now. I thought all of your renown carries over? The map I revealed in my eternal realm character seemed to have carried over, also the altars... to some extend. I guess i should have a few skill tree points right from the start, but it is also set to 0. Oh, and I started the season with the story skip checkmark set.

Did for you renown carry over completely? Also, did you have skill points right from the start?

How to get to those peeps?

I think the map shows where it is... I did not find a way to those guys. I searched for a hidden switch to open a passage, but could not find anything. Did anyone come across those guys or was this just a bug spawning mobs where there should be none?

What is the math behind that?

The dagger above the staff had 20 DPS and showed +2 in the Tooltip. This is something I can understand. But the staff has 40 DPS and only shows +4. How is this calculated?

[D4] 1080p players, do you see a difference with the high res textures?
  • Thank you! That is what I thought, probably not noticable during normal gameplay. I saw some pixelated textures when creating my character yesterday and I had the impression some textures looked better during the cutscenes which are zoomed in very much, but this is like less than 1% of the game. I think I will just save my bandwidth and ssd space for now.

  • 1080p players, do you see a difference with the high res textures?

    Hi there,

after 2 betas and waiting up until today, I pulled the trigger now and got #D4 (gifted by Wifey, yeah! :-) ). Now I wonder if someone playing 1080p did a direct comparison between playing with high res textures on and off. It is a 40 GB difference and they say you should activate it when playing on 4K and very high settings. I am pretty confident that in normal gameplay, it should not make a difference in my setup, but from the beta I have the impression that some cut scenes are rendered in-game and are zoomed very far in into the characters and landscape, where higher res textures might have an impact even on 1080p maybe?

So, is someone of you playing 1080p and saw a difference between the 2 options?

    Thanks in advance :-)

Liftoff not available an all Android devices?

    Hi there,

I installed Liftoff this morning on a super old Android Device (Android 8.1) via Google Play without any issues. So next step was to get it on my Smartphone running Lineage OS with Android 13. I was not able to find it in the Play Store, so I used the Link on the Github site of #liftoff and then Google Play tells me that this app is currently not available. OK, next step is F-Droid... can't find it there at all.

The Screenshots in Google Play look like they were created on a Smartphone, so my problem should not be Tablet vs Smartphone, but something else, right?

Edit: Forget about my question for F-Droid, I just read that it is not there, but the issue with Google Play still exists :-(

Pre-register to get notified when Boost for Lemmy is available to install
  • I'm glad to read that! Boost was the Android App that did not melt my ancient tablet and drain its battery within 45 minutes. I am happy to see that it will come with Lemmy support... and 2nd that wish for Kbin support :-)

  • Same users posting same content on all instances
  • I do not think this is what happens. At least not for me for the posts I checked. The double / triple posts I currently see on the "frontpage" are all posted in different Communities. The problem (at the moment?) ist that people of different instances create communities with basically the same topic. Like "tech" and "technologie", both are on different instances. Or Games, Gaming or whatever. Now when you create a post, you have to decide in which community you create it. There is currently also no way to crosspost with a single post. So if you want to make sure that people of the tech and the technology community can see your post, you have to post in both communities. And since we now have 2 posts in different communities (also in different instances), they can pop up in the frontpage.

Currently I do not see that there is an easy solution for this. I understand that people are posting the same in different communities to reach the biggest amount of people. Personally I tried to subscribe to all communities that seem to be related and have some activity, but not everyone might do this. Also for newcomers it is not obvious that once you subscribed to let´s say gaming on Beehaw, that they also should subscribe to games on let´s say kbin, so they can read all of this.

As long as there is no way to link communities together or to crosspost (one post that is seen on different communities), I think we have to live with seeing either multiple posts of the same topic (each with their own discussions going on) or stop creating multiple posts, but live with the fast that not everyone interested in it can read it.

  • Why we need to move on from kbin.social
  • That is also holding me back. I am hosting tons of stuff myself, all dockerized, but I was not able to get kbin up and running yet. I wish someone would manage the images, so we can just pull, edit a .env and run / upgrade it.

For me the whole process always hangs at a step that seems to have something to do with the php setup. I tried on different servers, even created a fresh Ubuntu 22 LTS and still had the same problem. I am sure I am doing something wrong (probably editing something incorrectly in the settings), but the process it not as easy yet as it is for the other services I am hosting at the moment.

  • A Visual Guide to SSH Tunnels: Local and Remote Port Forwarding
  • SSH Reverse Tunneling is super useful to get remote systems connected which only have very limited internet access through mobile carriers. They usually do NAT and you have no chance to connect to these sites with a dial-in VPN or other technologies that require YOU to connect to the remote system. So we just create a reverse ssh tunnel with autossh that is kept alive by the remote system itself and we connect back to the system to the ssh tunnel. Since ssh is installed anyway, that is one of the simplest and most versatile options to connect to these systems for us.

  • Should we be cross-posting to equivalent communities between instances?
  • Thank you, using tags is a good idea. Unfortunately I did not find a way yet to "follow" tags or "subscribe" to them like I can do with Magazines. If this is possible and people would use it, then this would be even more powerful than crossposting. I'm learning new stuff every day, this feels a bit like the early, magical days of the www. There´s so much to learn and discover :-)

  • Should we be cross-posting to equivalent communities between instances?
  • OK, dumb question probably but a quick web search did not help me (also my fault probably). But how do you crosspost? Do you need to @ place the other community names in the Subject or in the Tags or in the Text of your post?
