I'm just a guy that loves #gaming and #opensource, despite not understanding how it all works π Super fascinated by the fediverse and what it's capable of.
I'm hoping that I can find the time and energy to learn more about coding, so I can contribute to FOSS projects in the future π
My posts will delete themselves after 2 months, unless they contain media or get pinned by me.
If you're looking for content, try Sepia-search! https://search.joinpeertube.org/
It searches across 800+ known instances for content. But there could still be tons of unknown instances out there, which is why I'm asking around the Fediverse about any new channels/content.
@favrion @phil299 @fit6529 Well, with TILvids.com it's meant to be an instance with mainly Edutainment-content. It's selectively curated, so most of what is there is not too politically inclined. But much of it is tech-related.
But since anyone can post anything on their own instance, you would certainly find many instances with lots of political content.
Personally I post edited gaming videos in Norwegian, from sessions with my friends (some texted to english): https://peertube.linuxrocks.online/a/bloodaxe/video-channels
@favrion @phil299 @fit6529 It's basically a Peer2Peer version of YouTube, that also communicates via ActivityPub. This means I can use my Mastodon account (or any other ActivityPub service) to subscribe to PeerTube creators, and recieve their content in my feed.
Videos are pulled from an instance, and multiple instances can share their videos between each other to increase their reach. If multiple people watch a video at the same time, they share the serverload between eachother using P2P-tech.
@phil299 @fit6529 What TILvids is doing isn't wrong though. They want you to only discover a certain type of content when you visit their site (edutainment). And I like that, having more specialized instances. Then you know where to go to find quality.
TILvids only federate with one instance ATM, neat.tube, which is owned by TechLore whom produces Edutainment-content.
@phil299 @fit6529 Wait, this is only partially true. Whilst you can always sub to other PeerTube accounts accross instances, TILvids will not actively federate with everything and everyone. This directly affect what videos you can discover directly through TILvids, and that seems to be the most popular instance ATM. Or it's the one I keep hearing about at least.
We have Sepia-search that helps with discoverability, but not every instance has it activated. Again, this hurts smaller instances.
@GreenZero @cheeseblintzes @brenomartins Ok, that certainly is a step in the right direction! π It just needs to work across more services.
But hey, it's free and it works! π
@cheeseblintzes @brenomartins It's amazing how intertwined these services are thanks to using #ActivityPub π Commenting from Fosstodon.org right now! π¬
Now I just need a #BrowserExtention to smoothly reply and upvote across federated services without having to copy-pasting the link manually into my instance search-bar π€
@fm0d @vreraan Haha, this was basically my journey over to #Linux π And frankly, it was also my journey over to the #Fediverse as a whole!One day I just decided that enough was enough, and I had to practice what I preached.
So here I am, Linux, Fediverse and all!
@Ipodjockey @brenomartins What do you mean by this exactly? Lemmy is a federated platform, so if a rogue leadership for instance took over lemmy.world, you could spin up your own instance and migrate your community over there, and still connect with the broader network!
Now for the power of federated democracy to work properly, we need to not centralize on gigantic servers... π€ And that's hard to do properly, whilst still keeping things user-friendly enough for most folks.
@WhoRoger Let's not forget the fact that Lemmy and Kbin are both connected to the broader Fediverse, thanks to the AcitivityPub protocol! In other words, might be 1 mill Lemmy-accounts, but many more mill potential users that could interact with the content even without Lemmy or Kbin! π
@iameru @liaizon @fediverse I'm replying to you right now using Mastodon π I can also view the thread of the OP in Mastodon, if I have the fediverse-link to the post. So it shares posts, boosts, upvotes etc across services, regardless of software. As long as they all speak ActivityPub, we should all be able to do basic interactions.
For instance, I'm unable to downvote via Mastodon, but I can always upvote (on Masto it's called a favourite) and "boost" a post.
@rosatherad @polaroid This is very much how it works with Mastodon, you can basically export your data and hop to another instance whenever you like!
Honestly this is how it should work, for all of the #Fediverse. Migration should not be a second thought, but an integrated and assumed part of using the fediverse. I've jumped servers 3 times on Mastodon, because I kept finding a "better" home for myself and my interests. Finding the right place takes time!
@zauri27 I've been burnt too many times by fancy trailers and beautiful graphics... I mean, I'm a Star Citizen backer, I was fooled by pretty JPEGS! π
Most of the innovative things happen within the Indie community it seems, with people who are truly connected to their projects. They are driven by love for their craft AND the profit, unlike AAA-studio executives that focus only on the profits.
@GreasyTengu @Dasnap But my convenience is more important than immersion! π π
And they do have to tell you ASAP about the amazing content you've unlocked with your hard-earned cash, right? π
@Dasnap Well this is oddly relatable xD
@Bluetreefrog
@IronTwo
I've got to say, Linux and FOSS in general has really come a long way just these few last years. For me it has gone from tedious and problem-ridden to mostly frictionless. But the times that I do stumble unto an issue, it still takes a while to figure out a solution π So, not perfect yet, but a looot more user friendly these days! π
