How do you decide what treasure to give players?
  • I use ABP so that we can skip the less interesting +X stuff.

One of my players is very into crafting, and they work as a group to be able to afford things, so one of the best treasures I can give are uncommon or rare items, or even just the formulas.

I tend to focus more on fun than utility items, though this varies. And I like to give out thematic stuff. Recently they fought a Skuln, which is described as having adamant claws and teeth. But it has no listed treasure, so I gave them adamantium chunks as treasure from scavenging the body.

  • Are ranged weapons just worse than melee?
  • Combat is not still, depending on the rest of combat, someone may move into your line of fire.

But it does in general take a lot of actions to set up a fire-from-hidden situation.

Or get a wizard to upcast invisibility to let you stay invisible while sniping. :)

  • Now that RoE's been out for a second, what sorts of characters have you thrown together?
  • It looks like a lot of us are still running the characters that we already have in a campaign. :) I'm enjoying looking things over, but I haven't built anything yet.

  • Question about non-magic healing
  • Not breaking at all. Heck, alchemists get to use crafting, and a class feat can be used to make Nature the skill check. You should probably look at Herbalist archetype for wording.

  • How does the maths work out with Agile attacks?
  • From a GMs perspective, there are occasionally mobs who are trying to hit above their level, and have nothing better to do than go all out on their attacks. I usually have them switch to their agile attack for their second and third attack, because they are trying hard just to hit.

  • What are some good "sticky" monsters/npc's to use as frontliners?
  • Ropers are very good at denying movement. For the right party, even just one roper can be a challenge.

  • Links to common tools in sidebar?
  • It seems like a good idea to me.

  • When it comes to rules, what makes you say "I recognize that the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid-ass decision, I've elected to ignore it"?
  • I completely ignore the activation action for magic ammunition. You are already spending an action to fire it, and burning money before finding out if it hits, and then there is usually a save after that.

  • Remaster Core Preview now available
  • Oh, my players are going to be disappointed if is still capped at three. That seemed like am interesting potential to have a lot of points, and more motivation to get the level 12 feat.

  • Is there any way to spellstrike with Tengu feather fan spells?
  • Sparkling Targe seems the obvious answer to me, given that you have a natural weapon available. Starlit Span also works when using 1-handed range weapons.

That said, you can't generally use items for Spellstrikes, though there is a feat that lets you use scrolls.

The problem is that you don't cast directly, you activate the item, and that activation casts the spell for you.

    The flow is spellstrike->cast->attack

    An item is Active->cast(from item)

Spellstrike doesn't have the opportunity to activate an item, as that is a separate Action.

Mind, if I was your GM, I would allow it with a Tengu Feather Fan, as other races have innate spells, but not with other items. But you will need to talk with your GM about that.

  • [Crosspost] How to make Imaginary Weapon feel good at 6, no free archetype?
  • My first thought is to make sure you start off with Amped Shield and use the block each turn if you would get hit, that gets you three turns of reducing the damage of one hit each turn. And buy scrolls / a wand of Mage Armor. You do not want to take up a Spell-Known slot for it.

Hmm, Automaton has reinforced chassis, but unless you were already planning on having a strength of 16+, that seems less than ideal.

A human can just simply grab armor proficiency at 1st level (Via General Training). If you really want to commit, spend your first general feat to then upgrade it to Medium armor. Watch that Strength requirement for armor though. You might be better off getting the toughness feat for that general feat. Ouch, just realized proficiency does not auto-scale from this feat.

Spending two class feats to get Mountain Stance seems expensive (martial Artist archetype -> Mountain Stance), but does stack with Mage armor.

1 class feat for Sentinal dedication gets you light & medium proficiency up to Expert.

You could be a Well Spring mage, then no one will want to be near you in case you blow up! (just kidding .... or am I?)

That's all I can think of at the moment.

  • What app or tool would you recommend for building characters to use around the table?
  • I admit it gets confusing. At the time we ran into each other over on Reddit, I was living near Brisbane, CA, and he lives in the vicinity of Brisbane, AUS. We both play D&D/Pathfinder, both subscribe to random interesting things like r/etymology, etc.

So he is my Australian Doppelganger. :)

  • How would you rank the classes by complexity or difficulty of play?
  • I do not know, sorry. I just wanted to point him out in general as he is my other go-to on YouTube.

Though there is a third that might be useful for your players to understand certain parts of the system. Frizz is the name.

    https://youtube.com/@nochessyfrizz

He does short, generally very focused videos. I know you are converting your whole group, so I figure a bit of extra help could be useful.

  • How would you rank the classes by complexity or difficulty of play?
  • The Rules Lawyer is also pretty good, though his delivery is a bit drier.

  • How would you rank the classes by complexity or difficulty of play?
  • Some of the rage powers make it a bit more complex, like a feat that lets you use a rage-tagged ability for free when you activate rage, etc.

  • Question about the free archetype optional rule
  • Playing with free archetype almost inevitably requires making house rules to accommodate it. You level 4 issue can actually start at level 2, as there are sub-classes that can grant a multiclass dedication feat as a class feature, and at least 1 racial feat that can grant a multiclass dedication.

  • Paizo & Mirrorscape announce collab to bring Starfinder & Pathfinder to augmented reality
  • This is awesome tech. Unfortunately mutt gaming group is scattered, so I won't be able too use it, but I hope lots of others can!

  • What app or tool would you recommend for building characters to use around the table?
  • No, I'm doing it for a distance game. But with everyone on the discord, they just ping me if they want to work with a character, and I always set aside extra time during level-up to make sure everyone is good to go.

I have heard of people using Foundry (and other VTTs) for table games. You create 2 logins, DM logs in to his via the Foundry app, and the other is logged into through a browser and displays on a big monitor (possibly laid horizontally if you have the money to mod a table and have a glass insert). Control of the party token(s) will depend on the setup. If both monitors are being used by the DM's computer, the DM controls the party map directly, otherwise one of the players logs in on the second PC and controls the party tokens.

There are a lot of variations.

  • What app or tool would you recommend for building characters to use around the table?
  • Wait, I posted ... Oh, it's you again. :) unfortunately I can't help here, I use a VTT, so I don't need an external builder.

Well, I suppose I could use one, but it feels easier to spin up the VTT if I want to play with builds. That's what I get for GMing and hosting

  • Has pathfinder.social had an outage recently?
  • I was having issues, and it looks like no one was able to post or anything for a couple of days.
