Is it possible to have a Subsonic server that falls back to the YT Music API when a song isn't downloaded?
  • I have no idea, but I’m commenting so this gets traction. I’ve wanted to do the same thing, but didn’t know how you could set up the subsonic api to do that. I think a script that checked for the file first wouldn’t be a problem, but getting the metadata for all of those would be terrible

  • I hate to ask, but help me spec a build please
  • Thank you, do you run this with overseer?

  • Thanks, we tend to watch things once then not again, I figure 12TB across 4 drives should hold that pretty well? I just want a buffer of like, 5 episodes per show. Once watched, auto-delete. This should be enough storage no?

    Background:

Over Covid, I got really into high quality music and purchased the best headphones I could afford (ATH-MX50) and listened frequently. Once I discovered Jellyfin, a whole new world opened up to me and I began to self-host movies as well as my FLAC library.

Present: My parents want to cut the cord and I would like to help them by setting up a server for them. I’m techy and can handle some troubleshooting.

    Requirements:

    • I’d like for it to have at least 5 profiles, no more than 2 concurrent streams
    • I’d like to add things to a “queue” from my phone and manage my downloads like that
    • 4k media, perhaps transcodes to 1080p, but the local media is 100% 4k
    • Be able to SSH (or alternative) for remote debugging

Questions: What hardware should I buy? I’ve built PCs, so mostly, what cpu and how much storage should I go for? I can afford quite a bit, so I’d like to buy the right tool for the job once with upgrades to storage as needed. I know Jellyfin handles profiles, does Jellyseer handle the ability to automate downloads? Is this something the .arr stack can do?

Thank you for all your help, any advice is VERY appreciated. I just want to help my parents cut the cord

AI companies are violating a basic social contract of the web and and ignoring robots.txt
  • Yes, regulations should be in place, but the “legalized bribery” isn’t forcing people, it’s just easier to stick with the status quo than change it. They aren’t forced to die, it’s just a lot of work to not. The social contract is there, it’s just one we don’t like

  • AI companies are violating a basic social contract of the web and and ignoring robots.txt
  • You said “a social contract”. Capitalism operates on one. “The social contract” as you presumably intend to use it here is different. Yes, capitalism allows those with money to generate money, but a disproportionate distribution of wealth is not violation of a social contract. I’m not arguing for deregulation, FAR from it, but the social contract is there. If a corporation is doing something too unpopular then people don’t work for them and they cease to exist.

  • unusable mouse
  • Usability too. The hybrid touch/mouse combo hasn’t been implemented better elsewhere (as far as I’m aware) and I find touchpad functionality like that very good. I have to work on a windows laptop for work and I game on a windows machine, but my personal laptop was an $800 Mac and the touchpad and window management is leagues above my $1400 work Windows

  • AI companies are violating a basic social contract of the web and and ignoring robots.txt
  • Capitalism, at least, in a lassie-faire marketplace, operates on a social contract, fiat money is an example of this. The market decides, the people decide. Are there ways to amass a certain amount of money to make people turn blind eyes? For sure, but all systems have their ways to amass power, no matter what

  • Google’s Search AI Says Slavery Was Good, Actually
  • I think this is an issue with people being offended by definitions. Slavery did “help” the economy. Was it right? No, but it did. Mexico’s drug problem helps that economy. Adolf Hitler was “effective” as a leader. He created a cultural identity for people that had none and mobilized them to a war. Ethical? Absolutely not. What he did was horrendous and the bit should include a caveat, but we need to be a little more understanding that it’s a computer; it will use the dictionary of the English language.

  • DeSantis rocked by Black Republican revolt over slavery comments
  • Republicans aren’t all racist towards black people in the same way that all democrats aren’t all racist toward white people. Those who are racist against black people are likely republicans however. This is a problem with the two-party system. The whole point is to win over voters, and a vote is a vote no matter what

  • Almost like there should be one central hub… that’s what Reddit did right

  • Maybe I need to be on ml then. I feel like world is just full of the same.

  • There is a drop in monthly active Lemmy users (from 65k to 57k)
  • Maybe it’s because the content here just isn’t as vast. I’m nkt going back to reddit for awhile, but there’s so little to see on lemmy to me. Despite numerous subscriptions, I see very few memes and far too much political content. Of that political content it’s all the same. Sometimes this place feels like a hive-mind. Not that Reddit wasn’t, but it depended on the sub. Now it’s shaped by instance and everything here just feels stale

  • Make companies pay consumers for spending time watching their ads
  • This is how the free internet works. We get paid by free access. It’s expensive to host a server for people to access, this is the trade

  • School cops in Minnesota don't like new regulations against restraining students via head, neck, and torso holds
  • It’s not the choking that’s upsetting, it’s putting someone in a prone position or restraining their torso. These can absolutely be done in a way that doesn’t require someone to not breathe

  • School cops in Minnesota don't like new regulations against restraining students via head, neck, and torso holds
  • In fairness to the cops here, some of the maneuvers blocked by this are very standard. It’s something they’re trained to do. I expect that even taking a few seconds to assess what is and isn’t okay could cost an officer their life.

  • Weirdest AC

So I had a weird issue with my AC that I don’t even know how to begin googling. My air conditioner was running perfect for three years then all of a sudden started to go in and out one day. The airflow remained a constant though. At first I thought it was just too hot outside, but realized that wasn’t the case because it was just as hot a day ago. I then took out the cabin air filler, cleaned it, and ran it without the filter for like 30 minutes. It kept me cool the whole time. I put the filter back in, and it ran fine for another 2 days until now. I’m not flush with cash, what could I try as a quick fix? Any advice helps

We should not let the open web die a quiet death
  • Not even a meme…. What was google plus? I’ve had a gmail for like 15 years so I must’ve just missed it.

  • iOS 17 is a lot of little updates that make a big impact
  • It’s currently the best way to sideload content. You simply download the program to a computer which acts as a server that refreshes your apps. You have to refresh once a week. Sidestore is a fork that spoofs a macbook pro and allows you to completely untether from a server. You still have to refresh once a week.
