Anon tries watching nu-Trek
  • I agree it doesn't exactly capture the vibe and tone of the 90s show, rather it "gets at" them since it's a lot closer than other nutrek productions. Visually though it gives Star Trek 2009, which is a fun bit of continuity

  • Yes, watch Strange New Worlds! It really does get at the vibe and tone of TNG and the other 90s Trek shows. It's a breath of fresh air

  • Is this the future of Windows?
  • This product is not for you, individual consumer. This is for corporations who don't want the overhead of managing individual PCs and everything that can go wrong with them, instead relying on virtual workspaces and roaming user profiles.

  • In the US, is this actually the moment past the point of no return?
  • Soldiers knocking down doors to arrest millions of illegal aliens and everyone who looks like an illegal alien and shoving them into camps, what could go wrong?

  • They may not have real federation, but they do some things well
  • How about we have some control over people cyber stalking us? Especially from trolls and bad actors

  • What is the longest you've been awake without sleep? When and why did you do it?
  • 72 hours, insomnia. They first put me on benzos, then trazodone, then finally Lunesta was able to get my brain working fully again. The benzos were interesting because I didn't really feel like I slept when I was on it? Like it just erased my memory of the sleepless night

  • Ooh cyborg zombies, very cool. The detail on the ceiling with that device is also intriguing

  • Wales’s 20mph speed limit saves lives and money. So why has it become a culture-war battlefield?
  • but going much slower for no reason could get you pulled over

I feel like this is something everyone says but how often does this actually happen? Not often I'd guess, unless the police officer is bored, or it's at an hour where they're out looking for drunk drivers anyway

  • Niche Communities won't be able to reach their true potential until lemmy adds a sort that takes engagement into account.
  • Mastodon has a pseudo-algorithm (sort of, unless there's a better name) in the Search/Explore -> Posts view, which shows you posts that are trending on your instance. I wonder if Lemmy can come up with something similar based on your instance activity

  • What's Mastodon precious?
  • Because how else would we feel superior?

  • Popular Culture
  • Millions of American children are (were?) given these in the third grade and yes they all call them that

  • An excerpt from "They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45", an interview with a German after WWII on why they didn't rise up against the regime due to incrementalism.
  • Given the crossover of people displaying "thin blue line" flags with those showing "thin red line" flags (which is stupid, who is against the fire department??), and with their success in harassing corporations into dropping DEI initiatives, I wouldn't put it past right-wing crazies to try bullying their fire departments into ignoring incidents for their progressive neighbors

  • Discord admin gets 15 years for “one of the most significant leaks” in US history
  • I love how his last name is pronounced "to share a" and he did, in abundance

  • Bluesky users five years from now
  • This "just open the source code and change a few variables" github energy isn't good enough for a big boy platform.

Honest question, who is doing this? All android apps I've used have been completely fine and usable out of the box, and you can just go to your instance web address on your computer. Are you on some ancient alpha version of a client that hasn't been maintained?

  • Trump picks RFK Jr. , anti-vaccine activist, for Health and Human Services secretary

  • Bluesky Might End Up Defeating Twitter Once and for All
  • I think it's easy to understand Mastodon, or any federated service, using a metaphor for a country or large place, where you can say "I want to move to X country" but then you have to actually pick a place IN that country to live, like a specific city or rural district. Once you decide on your instance, it's really not that hard

engaging-data.com Visualizing California's Water Storage - Reservoirs and Snowpack - Engaging Data

California's snow pack is essentially another "reservoir" that is able to store water in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Graphing these things together can give a better picture of the state of California's water and drought.
