Why Is This Election Even Close?
  • You know, I'm extremely tired of hearing people piss and moan about the Democrats not accomplishing legislative miracles with the barest of majorities. The GOP is almost gleeful in being a bulwark against anything and everything that might possibly be seen as a Democratic win. We can't have nice things because 49% of Congress just wants to watch the other party suffer and cling to power by calling them ineffective.

What the fuck have the Republicans done that have helped the average working class American in the last twenty goddamn years?

They're nothing but rhetoric and religious fundamentalism. They had full control of both houses and the presidency and assured us we would have some great replacement to the ACA and literally nothing ever came of that. The Republicans don't want to help Americans, they just want to be in power. Why isn't that relevant? The Democrats can't pass sweeping legislation because of obstruction and that's the end of the world, but the Republicans have literally no ideas beyond removing rights from whatever flavor of "other" they're targeting this season and they get a pass.

Our country is fundamentally broken. One party's politicians say they want to represent all Americans and the other wants to use the military against their political rivals. And somehow the election is still close? Yeah. This whole country is fucked.

  • Over 200,000 subscribers flee 'Washington Post' after Bezos blocks Harris endorsement.
  • Newspapers are allowed to endorse candidates because the first amendment protects free speech. While I may agree with you that endorsements and news media stumping for ANY candidate is problematic and reeks of propaganda, it is, for better or worse, protected by the constitution.

  • YSK: Google is Killing uBlock Origin. No Chromium Browser is Safe.
  • Makes sense. We send everything through it by default and then we have a separate device group for non-Pihole DNS handling. Devices such as work computers that might get weird or have issues get put in this group. Everything else is by default put through Pihole until we have a reason otherwise.

  • YSK: Google is Killing uBlock Origin. No Chromium Browser is Safe.
  • Pihole has always worked as expected on my Pixel phones. To the point that I have to drop off of our wifi to visit some sites when they don't load correctly. Pihole is happening at the router level though, not a setting on my phone. Unless Android starts tunneling around it (I wouldn't put this past Google), then all traffic will continue to go through Pihole since it's going through our router. Any device connected to our network has Pihole as its DNS.

  • TIL miniblinds with pull cords to raise and lower them are now illegal to sell in the United States
  • Many cats die every year from them actually, just like children. I am super vigilant about hiding mine out of the way so ours can't see them to play with because I'm terrified of it happening. I really just need to replace them, but they're the nice heavy wooden white ones and throwing them out seems like such a waste.

  • You'll have to use pto time to drown, but make sure it's approved first
  • I would rather risk homelessness and starvation rather than drowning. If the water around the place I am is rising I am going to get to safety. Full stop. No job is worth risking my life for.

I understand what you're saying, but at the end of the day if you are dead, nothing else matters.

  • Maggie Smith, star of stage, film and 'Downton Abbey,' has died aged 89
  • Dame Maggie Smith was a gem in everything she was in. Her performances elevated every piece of media she performed in. I would watch movies just because she was in them, and I never regretted that. Today is truly a sad day. Rest in peace. She gave the world countless masterful performances and now the curtain has closed.

  • Survey: 73% of Amazon workers are considering quitting after 5-day in-office mandate
  • When my last company said we had to go back 3 days a week I found a new job. I agonized over the decision for days because I had been there 8 years, but knew I would be unhappy going back. Am happy as a lamb now though and work fully remotely for a company who's nearest office is over 2000 miles away. Best career decision I've ever made

  • Steam does the opposite of forcing Arbitration on its users
  • Instead of Steam forcing any disputes with them to go through an "impartial" 3rd party company they choose and pay for to oversee and rule on disputes, they are saying that disputes must go through the courts.

Basically forced arbitration has always been seen as anti-consumer and unfair because the company is paying for the arbitration and is thus considered more likely to be found in favor of. Steam is doing the opposite and as such this is seen as pro-consumer and a good thing

  • I don't mind paying for YouTube Premium.
  • I agree with this, though part of it is that I am still grandfathered into the $7.99/mo original Google Music launch promo price. It is worth it to me not to see ads to continue paying for it. The current monthly premium at $14/mo for new users is insanity.

  • To Americans: How far apart is everything in the US?
  • I live in suburban Kansas City and these are the distances to the things you mentioned -

    • Convenience store - 1.2 miles (1.9km)
    • Chain supermarket - 2.8 miles (4.5km)
    • Bus stop - 1.2 miles (1.9km)
    • Park - .4 miles (650m)
    • Big supermarket - 5.5 miles (8.8km)
    • Library - 1.9 miles (3km)
    • Train station - 7.4 miles (11km) (trains are not really a viable transport option here)
    • Airport - 29.1 miles (46.8km)

The closest publicly accessible business to me is a fast food restaurant about a mile away.

Basically if I need anything, it's a 30 minute walk one way to get there. It just isn't really viable as a regular thing to spend an hour walking to get to/from a convenience store, or 2 hours for a grocery store. Instead, I spend 10-20 minutes in my car for those errands, and save the extra time for walking my dog (since he couldn't go into any of the places mentioned above either, so his walks would have to be in addition anyway.)

  • Random cats love me and it makes me happy. They always just approach me and want strokes.
  • Part of why cats like you is probably because you don't like them and seek them out. Most cats are wary of people directly trying to approach them without invitation or greeting. In general cats will find the person ignoring them the least threatening and most approachable.

It never fails that cats tend to flock toward the person that is allergic to them, because that person is typically entirely disinterested in them lol. Not being interested in the cats is likely why you make friends with them so quickly!

  • How a Child Got 65 Years for a Murder the Police Committed: lawyer explains broken US justice system (10min 14 sec video)
  • While I agree that felony murder in theory is just, I do take objection to trying a minor as an adult with it. The whole reason we have a separate justice system for minors is because they are too stupid, impressionable, and gullible to know what they are doing, and understand the potential consequences and outcomes of their actions. Couple that with the adolescent feelings of invulnerability, and trying them as adults is just wrong in most cases in my opinion.

Should this kid be punished? Absolutely yes. Should he live most, if not all, of his adult life in prison? No. Unequivocally no. This situation is exactly where and why we need better rehabilitation and education in the American justice system. The whole notion of him being in prison for 65 years is just absurd to begin with in my opinion - instead of wasting 65 years spending tax dollars feeding and housing him, let's educate and rehabilitate and get him out to be a productive member of society. ...whole situation is stupid

  • Density saves nature
  • So um, why are the houses and nature mutually exclusive? I live in a suburban detached single family home, and my whole neighborhood is filled with trees, wildlife and even a tree lined creek that separates the back yards on my street from the back yards on the opposite side. You can't even see my actual yard from google maps because it's nearly entirely covered by tree canopy (at 6pm in summer my yard is 100% shaded). We have all sorts of wildlife including deer, foxes, owls, frogs, mallards, rabbits, squirrels, etc.

While I agree that we do need more housing options of all sorts, I don't for a second agree that nature and suburban housing are mutually exclusive. We just need to stop tearing down all the trees when we build, and plan better.

  • Borderlands' theatrical run grinds to a halt with just $31 million worldwide, which is barely enough to cover the marketing costs
  • Crazy that they spent that much on marketing and I still had no idea that movie was coming until I read articles about how badly it bombed. Did they blow the marketing budget on hookers and blow and call it good?? What the hell happened here?!

  • Steam Families is here
  • I'm really glad to see this. My husband and I game together a lot so we will still buy individual copies of a lot of games. Theres some games though that I'd like to try but never will because I won't buy them, and his library is basically never available when I want it to be. Happy that we can now share some of those really weird one off games!

  • French rule
  • While I agree with your sentiment, there is a difference between not understanding and actively disparaging. The former is fine - there's plenty of stuff I don't understand, and I just don't comment on it because I have no business doing so. Where I take objection is when the lack of understanding transforms into bigotry and disparaging remarks.

By all means be ignorant (and I don't mean that in a derogatory manner - we are all ignorant about various things), but don't let your ignorance manifest into negativity.

  • Is there any proprietary Android app for which you wish there would be an open-source alternative?
  • Sleep As Android is hands down the #1 app on my phone I cannot give up. It's THE reason I could never switch to Apple. I've gone beyond basic use and now have it automating things based on sleep actions and I kind of love it.

  • YubiKeys are vulnerable to cloning attacks thanks to newly discovered side channel
  • I would argue that if the attacker has physical possession of my yubikey, that alone means the accounts tied to it are vulnerable. While the information isn't technically wrong, I feel like that headline is misleading and this isn't as big of a deal as some would like to make it out as.
