For those in the US, Tire Rack can shave down a new tire to a specific depth for you. You just need to measure the other tire(s) to give them a measurement.
Had to do this for my Subi once and it worked like a charm. No mechanical problems after (although I did sell the car, like, a year later).
Maybe the appeal is the "cool factor". Here's 2 examples I could think of. At work, you want to stand out from the "water bottle" people. At parties/bars maybe you don't want to drink alcohol, but still want something in your hand while you're mingling.

Edit: double sucks cuz I just remembered I had a friend we called the "Master Bageler" cuz he worked there. He lasted less than 2 weeks before our unnecessary cruelty caused him to quit (teenagers are assholes).
