September 2023 Megathread
  • I'll just need to get less scared of dying-- it's never actually happened on my current account, but I'm not hcim so it doesn't really matter. Thank you for the offer of help!

  • I was setting my sights on Prime because of the dragon axe (unless I goofed and it's one of the others). Priority #1 is probably just unlocking ancients and grinding fletching to get magic short, haha 🙃

  • I'm a regular ironman that just got 1500TL the other day... and I feel so frustrated with the wiki. Looking up strategies that they describe as "low level/beginner" for things like Dag Prime, and the gear it recommends is full specific Barrows and other things that would themselves need gear setups to get.

I think I might just go and get my ass kicked a bunch and try to keep from that feeling of "man I really should be using this gear..."

  • I need to use my google play rewards - what great, paid apps do you use?
  • I like Diarium, journaling once a day has helped me feel like I'm not "wasting" my days doing nothing. I started out with just 2 or 3 sentences at first, and now I'm writing down frustrating bits, cool interactions, or sometimes still just a laundry list of what I did. It helps me feel like I'm not just floating through life.

I also like using my credit to offset the cost of the season pass in Marvel Snap once a month, but that's more for just whatever phone game you feel deserves a few bucks now and then (if any).

  • Barbie earns $1 billion at the box office worldwide
  • Got back from the theatre about 10m ago, and I see why! It was a lot of fun, and while it did have some serious things, it also didn't take it's humorous parts seriously. For 2 hours and the cost of a ticket, I'd definitely recommend it.

  • How does someone with no experience learn to make food?
  • While maybe not super cost friendly, I second the meal box angle. I wasn't bad at cooking, but was definitely super slow with knife skills, not comfortable with some stovetop methods of cooking, etc. We used Hello fresh and Plated (before they went out of business), and that really springboarded us into feeling like we could cook. Haven't ordered any meal boxes in like 5 years now, and make homemade dinners 4+ times a week.

  • Spotlight Caches
  • Saved my 2 that I've earned for this week, and opened Echo (cool I guess because it's new, but it's not really useful, per se) and then a dupe Nebula which gave me chibi Zero 🤮

A week also feels like not nearly enough to have them available for, I wish they were 2 weeks each, or were just 3 stated options instead of "oh ho ho, we're hiding the last one!"

  • What is something really stupid you purchased that turned out far better than expected?
  • An Aeropress Go.

I'm far from a coffee snob, but figured I'd give this $25 piece of plastic a try because a good friend was raving about it. In the year since, it's been my favorite way to make myself a cup of coffee-- the ritual of it helps me structure my Saturday morning, the coffee tastes better than I thought coffee could taste, and I'm more excited to look at the flavors and whatnot from locally ground coffee.

  • Jean Grey releases tomorrow night! What are you planning on using her with?

    Card text:

Jean Grey [3/3] Ongoing: Players must play their first card here each turn (if possible).

What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?
  • I always get myself to do things I don't want to by thinking "Future-me is going to be much happier when he finds that present-me did this already."

Helps me find the motivation to exercise, make myself a good cup of coffee instead of a kcup, do the dishes after dinner, lots of things. And past me is such a bro, saved me from present-me having to do those things.

  • What podcasts are you listening to?
  • The Omnibus -- a weird collection of obscure knowledge and topics, hosted by Ken Jennings and John Roderick. I've learned about the Charge of the Light Brigade (and why a cardigan is called a cardigan), I've learned about John Wayne's yacht that was converted from a minesweeper ship, and about the Hillbert Hotel way to visualize infinite numbers. It's good shit.

Also will always recommend This American Life from NPR. Sometimes it can be a bit of a miss, but usually it's my favorite way to start the workweek drive.

  • Do you think that Lemmy will last or will it die in a few weeks?
  • I think the app part is the biggest factor. I'm using Jerboa, and while it's still good and useful, it definitely has some bugs (crashing when uploading photos has been annoying). I'm still sticking with it, but I can see a more average internet user getting frustrated with that or with the somewhat weird sign-up process and learning how federation-y stuff works.

It'd be sick to have a standard "this is how you sign up" tutorial built into each app!

  • Shouldn't all the instances show the same community content?
  • I like both, in their own time and place. For memes, news, etc? I don't usually need to comment on those posts, but I do like there to be a steady stream of new content from a bunch of people. In that case, I'd love there to just be a bigger community, even if I don't feel like my comments (if I made them) would be read.

However, if I'm trying to have discussions about Magic, Zelda, teaching, or cooking, then I would rather have the smaller community to actually have discussions. Even it that case though, having one place as a "news aggregator" for that hobby would be nice.
