Got an old, cold house like Laine's? Here are seven ways to make it warmer and cheaper
  • Just a point of note about insulation.

    It works both ways.

If you seal up your house to keep it warm overnight, keep in mind that if it's warmer outside the next day, that same insulation will keep that warmth outside and things cooler inside.

I did an experiment by applying bubble wrap to windows as a cheap, removable insulation layer. My conclusion was that it works, but it is probably more useful if you are actively heating/cooling.

It's not as useful for passive heating/cooling, as it stopped you opening windows to take advantage of the better outside temperatures. Eg, in summer it would keep the room a bit cooler during the day, but it would stay warmer at night. In winter, it would be the opposite; it would be warmer at night, but be cooler during the day.

The cheapest way to stay warm is to only heat the person, not the room. Beanie, ugg boots and an electric throw rug will keep you toasty warm and cost relatively little. I got a cheapy electric throw from kmart that I don't know how (or why!) I ever lived without it! And I don't need AC/heating at all during winter any more....

  • Labor branch in Albanese’s electorate passes motion supporting Fatima Payman
  • idk much about politics or how the ALP works, and didn't even read the article, but unless there's something specific about Labor branches that have voted to support Albanese's position, it's one sided reporting by definition ...

Edit: I scanned the article and there appears to only be reporting on those 6 branches that were against the PM. For all we know, every other branch (hundreds?, thousands?) supports the PM. One sided.

  • What’s really inside vapes? We pulled them apart to find out
  • It's insanity. Rechargeable batteries were the default. You could switch out for a better battery. The whole vape scene looked to be a big win for decreasing smoking and reducing costs.

Then big tobacco and the government got involved.

It's literally buying rechargeable batteries and throwing them away after the first use. (Yes, I have also yelled at someone when they did that with some AA Eneloops 🙄).

As an aside, I don't smoke or vape, but had an interest in batteries, and some of the info that would come from some of the vape sites was fantastic.

  • 'A king above the law': US Supreme Court's Trump ruling prompts judges to warn of 'nightmare scenarios'
  • It staggers me that in reality so much of the operation of various countries democracies have relied upon good people acting in good faith.

Was Scomo making himself anything less than a king by secretly appointing himself as the minister in charge for every key portfolio? Roll out martial law, and congratulations, you have a new dictator. Surely, he could have done it with the panic around covid.

I always thought that looking back through history, with the lessons from ancient Egypt, Greece, the Roman Empire and even the rise of Stalin, Hitler etc we would be aware of what to look for and wouldn't fall for the same thing over and over.

But it still seems to be so incredibly easy to achieve. It doesn't seem to matter how 'democratic' you are, or how democratic you think your society is.

    I am disappoint....

  • The simple way is to dual boot or even simpler, set up a Linux distro in a Windows VM.

Let's you play/see if the distro works for you.

  • I love ice cream, and a 1l or 2l tub is lucky to make it past 2 days.

But I struggled with my last tub. It's the first time I can remember that I went 'Nah, I don't want any. It'll be too cold and just unpleasant'. I could only bring myself to eat it at lunchtime.

And now I've actually stood in front of the fridge at the supermarket and gone 'Brrrr, no I'm not buying that. It'll be cold'.

Somebody help me. I'm now literally softer than ice cream sitting in the sun on a summer's day 😢

  • ‘I have to stand up’ — Wayne Bennett takes aim at refs, bunker in stunning NRL plea
  • Also, IIRC one of the key points for introducing the sin bin was to penalize foul play and make it easier for refs to apply it because everyone was too scared to send someone off, and everyone whinged that having 12 players for all or most of the match was too harsh.

I'm for sendoffs and sin bins. If those aren't in place you are going to have professional hit men out there to take out the opponents best players. And their team will get the 2 points, or they win the GF or SoO then they get suspended.

Consistency is what's needed. And you see the lack of it in plenty of decisions, sometimes even within the same game.

Overall, I like the review system and challenge system. There are plenty of sports where it's an absolute shitshow. EPL and NBA come to mind. The issue is only around consistency of decisions.

I use old.reddit.com, and had trouble logging in from there today. "Too many redirects". I also use the Redirect to old.reddit.com extension. When I disabled that, the login link it now takes you to is https://www.reddit.com/login/. That, of course, takes you to www.reddit.com.

The old 'popup' login box has been removed. I also noticed that the in sub logins where they used to have username/password entry boxes have been removed.

    Best Tomato Sauce/Ketchup?

Ok I have a confession to make. I often don't put tomato sauce on things that are expected required by Aussies to have tomato sauce. It's a shameful thing, and I don't want to talk about that.

But, sometimes I must have tomato sauce. The bottle is almost empty, and after upgrading my BBQ sauce and Mayo, surely there is a great bang for the buck tomato sauce.

Choice rated Community Co A Squeeze of Tomato Sauce, available from IGA, as number 1 in 2019 from a list of over 20 tomato sauces/ketchups.

Anyone tried this and can give me a recommendation and reasons on why I should try something else over this?

Ima have to apologise in advance for being a questioning beotch that expects a reference to a scientific study for every statement...after quoting Choice 🤣

Reports of electric vehicle fires might lead some people to fear the growing numbers of these vehicles will increase fire risk. In fact, replacing petrol and diesel vehicles is likely to reduce it.

Electric vehicle fires are very rare. The risk for petrol and diesel vehicles is at least 20 times higher

I thought that the media was a little over the top with reporting every electric car fire.

Little did I realise just how blown out of proportion it was:

"...electric vehicle battery fires are rare. Indeed, the available data indicate the fire risk is between 20 and 80 times greater for petrol and diesel vehicles. "

So, it appears the first SMR project in the US was scrapped due to rising costs.
