[The Althletic in-depth analysis] Ange Postecoglou successfully ushers Spurs into the inverted full-back era
  • It would be interesting. I'd guess Porro just ends up being quite a bit too direct for it to work out, but I'd be curious to see what would happen. Deki is clever enough to give it a run. Not actually expecting to see it but wouldn't mind a half or two just for the sake of seeing how it plays out.

  • Just realized SONAF buffs VIG/STR/DEX by 5 when Equipped. Whoa! What next?

Title. I'm mid/late game and decided I wanted to try out some new weapons that I've been sitting on. Had no idea this attribute buff was the case but just spent some time farming my Faith up so I could try the SONAF that's been in my inventory forever. I realized my vigor strength and dexterity jumped by 5 and was confused and now realized it's only when SONAF is equipped. And it seems to apply to other weapons equipped at the same time? Or at least the attributes stay in place even.

How can I beat take advantage of this. Is there something I'm missing? If it's basically like having half of another radagons soreseal when equipped, maybe I need to beef my strength/dex a bit so I can carry the SONAF as a buff to other weapons, too!

  • Ugh, this band is so good. Saw them live a couple of months ago or the first time and they just tore it up, top to bottom. Still feel like I'm recovering from it.

  • Does it feel like the fediverse is exclusively used by older tech nerds?
  • DiCaprio wouldn't ever date me...wait, is "older" code for "ugly"? Oh you little...

  • obligatory lines post
  • First of all, I think lines are going to change a lot early in the season. But I'll throw these out anyway...

    Razor - Larkin - ADB

    Fabbri - Compher - Perron

    Sprong - Copp - Berggren

    Fischer - Ras - Kostin

    Veleno/Kasper

    Seider - Walman

    Ghost - Holl

    Maatta - Chiarot

    Lindstrom/(Edvinsson)

    Husso

Lyon/Reimer (pick 'em, but I'd rather run with Lyon)

I could see several combinations of the first line. I don't prefer Perron there but guessing Lalonde will give it a shot, too. Guessing the top 6 should end up modestly stable, though, since they'll probably all spend a lot of time on the PP and we may want to come back with a tough line thereafter to combat a team fresh off a kill. Likewise for Copp/Fischer/Ras/Kostin on the PK, though, we may get some Larkin time there, too, situationally. I really liked how we we deploying regular linemates on the PK a bit last year (larks/razor, e.g.), but it didn't stick. While it worked for chemistry, surely we'd rather save guys like that for ES and PP time.

Defensively could be hard to say. A chiarot-Holl pair gives me some pause, but I really like the idea of Ghost and Maatta, so hopefully we get to see that at points. But we got a lot of Maatta-Chiarot to close out last year so guessing we see a bit more of it. Seider-Walman seems like it's theirs to lose and only may get disrupted depending on how the PP plays out, since seider, Walman, Ghost all likely spending some time there.

  • [DRW IG] UPDATE: The #RedWings today acquired forward Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 1st Rd pick and a 4th round pick in 2024
  • I'm okay with it in context. He started the year hot and then tapered a bit. 10 goals in first 24 games, then 10 goals in his final 56.

Truth is probably somewhere in the middle but the reality is that he was never someone to generate much on his own. He has a great spot but his play away from the pick always left a ton to be desired. Happy to give him up to get a 2x 40 goal scorer who is also nearly 2.5 years younger and a right shot.

The extension was already posted but not the trade. This is a really solid deal for us. Great option on the 1st rounder, an expiring/expendable Kubalik, and a mid-range D man in Sebrango (whom I liked but is also at best currently 4th or 5th on our defensive prospect depth chart). No Berggren/simlar. Overall, nice piece of business.

Fans outraged as Tottenham increases Match Day Prices by a staggering 20%
  • Love to see how it compares to the league more broadly. I don't know if it's better or worse but the same, genuinely, but I have a feeling things are going up in most places.

YSK: lemmyverse.net is the best way to find active communities
  • And to add, if you want more directly to see the data on activity of the instances and communities, switch the view to "List" from the default "Grid"

  • Old games with interesting perspective switches were neat.
  • It absolutely did! When you'd get into the "rooms" with the gray walls and the electric-y fencehy thing Infront of you, you'd have to dodge left and right while holding the gun in front of you in first person view. That game was so fucking hard...

  • [Friedman] Zadina and Andreoff clear. Zadina will go through the process of picking his next NHL team. Believe Andreoff is headed overseas
  • Wish for the best for him. If nothing else, the kid is regularly bet on himself. This is a pretty big bet, but hopefully a change of scenery in a different combination of surroundings and lineup can help him produce more.

  • Yeah definitely a huge instance after the 18 upgrade!

  • Is there a way to subscribe to all communities with the same name?
  • I'm not sure if it's for the same reasons, but Andro.id is another example of an instance around a common intent/subject, with communities based on topics within that subject area.

Interesting concept but agree that if that was the intended means of propagating the fediverse, it doesn't seem like it's happening as planned (but still in a very viable way).

  • Way-too-early 2024 Mock Draft
  • I'm with you. Honestly, though, anything between roughly 7th and 14th is more or less interchangeable. You're likely talking about teams that are only a few wings away from playoff contention, at least for a portion of the year. With variability being from a number of random uncontrollable factors. Of course not all teams in that range are created equal, but my point was mostly that I don't want us to end up that low again. It likely would mean we were 1) bad but not terrible, 2) still likely not an actual playoff contender and 3) not a lottery winner. It suggests a pretty rough middling position for us at this juncture.

Sucks not winning the lottery in a cap era rebuild.

  • On Jerboa. Probably need to give connect a shot at some point just to experience it. But I'll almost certainly switch to Boost once it drops. Absolutely hooked on that for reddit for many years and it's such an awesome client I'm sure it's dev, Ruben Mayayo, will do no less for Lemmy.

  • Way-too-early 2024 Mock Draft

theathletic.com 2024 NHL Mock Draft: Way-too-early predictions from Corey Pronman

After a 2023 NHL Draft that lacked premier defense talent, the way-too-early indicators are that 2024 will be the opposite.

Good to start getting a feel for who's got eyes on them heading into 2024. If this were reddit there'd already be 10 posts of people saying Pronman sucks. I personally really appreciate him, but also would probably end up slightly dead inside if we draft 8OA next year.

Regardless, good to start learning these talents. Imagine drafting another Eiserman...

Why all of a sudden tech companies are not being favorable to their users?
  • Yeah this is critical. These promises for money later mean that all sorts of stupid ideas were being funded, and therefore people hired, etc, but now that's coming to a close. Companies and investors will be more likely to scrutinize spending (as they should) and see how to rightsize with reality and line of sight to profit. For significantly more complex reasons, it's similar to an individual borrowing themselves into crazy debt, and banks eventually determining that they need more than credit/promises to keep seeding you cash.

Time to pay back some promises.

  • Red Wings address several needs in free agency, but are they better?
    • One thing we can't forget is that this off-season's FA crop was/is quite maligned. Everyone's been dogging it for months so we shouldn't now somehow expect to get dramatically better from it.

    • I don't mind the Holl deal at all. It's not a crazy amount of term or money and he's going to be quite serviceable. I also like that we can reduce some of the time that seider plays on the PK, bc while he's write capable it's also just hard minutes to play and there's injury risk given how winning he is to block a shot. Hell still play but Holl will eat time there.

    • I think Compher will be fine. It does feel like his deal is about 1x1m too large but I also think that's just what happens when you need to go to the market to fill gaps.

    • not discussed much yet it's that this is really our first chance to build some things with lalonde after him having a year under his belt and being able to evaluate some of our players (and us having another year with them). Zadina... we'll see...it's been ~4 years of still not quite all coming together. JFV has NHL level ability but has a long way to go to guarantee himself a nightly roster spot at C; he also doesn't have a contract yet.

At the end of the day, we have no choice but to replace Suter, erne, sundqvist, vrana, and Bert. Plus some AHL plugs. I think the signings and picks also show that the team isn't that sold on veleno long term. This off-season wasn't the one to change the trajectory of the team with moves. MAYBE getting debrincat would help that a bit, but it's no guarantee and clearly we're not the only ones with challenges getting alignment with him on contract terms. This is just the difficulty we face when not winning the lottery...elite talent isn't just available to take.

Finally, I think we're also locking up a couple of middle/depth pieces in Compher and Holl before the cap jumps slot next year and the spending increases. I'm not sure I love spending 8.5M on them combined annually, but it's really not that terrible. Again, the primary pause I have here is the term on Compher, but good luck picking up anyone to play top/middle 6 roles for less in FA. As much as I liked Suter, Compher is inarguably a better offensive option.

Hopefully berggren can take that next step for us and Ras returns with the form he had pre-injury. Maybe next year we go for big offense in FA.

  • Do you think reddit will survive this?
  • Yeah I'm with you. Core reddit has been a disaster for a long time. I happily left a long time ago and eventually came back as 3rd party apps allowed me to have s completely different experience on mobile and I could finally stop using desktop (though res always lively fondly in my heart).

I'm moving away from Reddit for a least a while too see how things begin to unfold. Will try Lemmy, too, and see if it grows enough to be worthwhile and have the momentary to build some sort of critical mass offer time. Seeing some major said move here (Boost, for me) will be awesome.

But I don't expect reddit to disappear. As was said, for a ton of people, the 3rd party so exodus is not impactful, if they're even aware of it.

I'd guess Reddit continues for a long time, but becomes even more diluted than it has since the tencent investments and the huge leave-facebook migration from a few years ago.

    Post Draft Thoughts
  • While I agree that I'd like to see us take more high-upside scoring picks in the draft, I think Yzerman has essentially resigned that they could almost come from anywhere at this point but they want to make sure our high picks are solid to build NHL depth.

I feel as though these past two years of not hitting in the lottery has left us realizing that we probably are going to free agency for top talent, or possibly a trade longer term. It's simply a lot more difficult than people think to just snag elite scoring in a draft. If the plan is to build a base around solid NHL centers and defense, and then acquire elite scoring wings, I'm okay with that. I'm guessing free agency next off-season will be huge for us, depending on how this year goes and how long term contracts shake out for seider and Raymond.
