Community rules & banner update

It’s somehow been three months since @[email protected] and I agreed to take over moderation of this community, and we’ve not really had to do anything other than keep an eye out for reports. It’s not exactly been a taxing job, so firstly thank you stitchers for being so undramatic!

But that all happened while I was still super ill and to be honest most of November and December is like a weird fever dream. So I kind of did not do the one thing I said I’d do at the time: post some prospective community rules.

Basically what I’m thinking is we want to have something written down that we can point to just on the off-chance of misbehaviour, but at the same time we don’t need anything draconian or super specific while we’re so small.

Since I’ve already been through this process with [email protected] and there are even quite a lot of people here who are in there too, I think it makes sense to maybe start off with similar rules to the ones the knitters agreed and then diverge if we need to.

Main concerns over there were:

  • encouraging people to add pattern info to their posts and
  • making sure we have a rule in place to allow removal of ads

On that second point, it was generally agreed that active members of the community should be free to advertise their shops and products in context, but a complete stranger barging in to post a straight-up ad and then leave should be removed. Basically kind of vibe-based, depending on if you look like a spammer or not, which works fine for a small community tbh.

I’d love to hear from community members on this. Are you ok just following the template from /c/knitting for now? Is there something more specific to us you’d also like to see included in the official rules? Or do you maybe disagree with one of those two things above and want us to rethink?

Input very much welcome, thank you!

And for a bit more of a fun thing, we have a random community banner and icon that I guess the original owner just googled on the day and never thought about again. In /c/knitting I made a banner featuring some recent FOs that had been posted by the most active members, and that was pretty popular.

I’d be happy to knock up something similar for here, but also want to throw it open in case anyone else would like to give banner design a go! Maybe we’ll say if nobody else comes up with something by the end of March I’ll go full collage mode with our FOs, that gives time for a few entries if you fancy it?

We'll also need an icon and I did not make the knitting one so am officially looking for ideas of what we could use. Actual images, vague concepts, all assistance welcome!

Thank you for bearing with this wall of text. Now get back to stitching!

Useful links to related craft communities

Stitchy friends! Since makers tend to make more than one sort of thing, and we crafters need to stick together, here's a list of fellow creative communities for your navigation pleasure.

For each craft I'll include the current most active community first as well as alternatives, and add each with their full URL as well as local links for Lemmy and Kbin users respectively.

Just in time for our best friends' wedding!

I love cheeky cross stitch, this was a free pattern found on the DMC website, then I chose a font I liked for the words. I think it came out great!

#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem

\#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem I got this one off of a #FlossTube video on YouTube awhile back-- Steering wheel covers repurposed as #GrimeGuards for #CrossStitch or #Embroidery! Probably for small #Quilting projects, too. These came from #DollarTree & only cost a few dollars. They fit pretty snuggly around my largest Q-Snap frame, too. 😄 @lemmy\_stitch @crossstitch @christianstitchers @embroidery @quilting @charitystitchers #GrimeGuard

WIP Wednesday! Trying out a homemade pattern for the first time!

I can't call this one fully original because I did use the Bing Image Creator AI website to generate the initial artwork.

After generating the image I converted it into a pattern on Floss Cross

If you hadn't already guessed, this is a Prince pattern! I'm making it as a custom piece for a friend, but it's also a good chance to test out a homemade pattern before I try a bigger completely original pattern after this!

\#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem I guess this may be more of a #Hack than anything, but it helps keep #Embroidery scissors from being quite so easily lost. Mini split rings can b found in the #Jewelry making section of most department & #Craft stores. Attach one 2 one loop on your scissors & attach a key chain (I found mine in the jewelry making section 2) with a larger split ring 2 the mini split ring. Voila! Scissors that are far less likely to walk off! @lemmy\_stitch @crossstitch

\#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem An after market cup holder/console organizer that normally would fit between your vehicle's console & one of your seats. BUT those who #CrossStitch, #Sew, #Quilt, #Knit, etc, can fit it between the arm of their couch or recliner & their seat cushion 2 organize small things or 2 use as on #ORT collector! Normally costs $10 or less & can b found in most automotive accessories sections of department or automotive tools stores @lemmy\_stitch @crossstitch

We have only just begun

And new project started. That thumbnail has seen some things... First time using yellow Aida. Kinda like it. Much easier to work with than black. And this is another pretty big stitch so I'm glad I won't need the light under the project.

I have a HUGE favor to ask of all my #StitchyFriends...

BASIC #StitchingSafety states that one should refrain from holding #PinsAndNeedles in one's mouth while working.

Unfortunately, this has been a #BadHabit about 40 years old now.

If you all would be so kind, PLEASE remind me periodically that my #Embroidery needle doesn't belong in my mouth while #Stitching.

My poor, sore tongue thanks you.

\#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem I actually got this one off Facebook awhile back. Florescent #FishingLine! Great for #Gridding in #CrossStitch or #Basting in #Quilting or #Sewing. It's bright enough 2 be seen, but slippery & strong enough that your needle won't pierce it while #Stitching. If I remember correctly, it comes in more than just neon yellow, too. Can be found in almost any #SportingGoods department or store. @lemmy\_stitch @crossstitch @quilting @sewing @christianstitchers

\#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem

Mechanics normally use a #Mechanics Telescoping Magnetic Pick-Up Tool 2 pick up small bolts & other metal that have fallen as they work, but those who #CrossStitch, #Sew, #Quilt, etc., can use it to pick up lost pins & needles so they don't wind up goosing someone when they sit on the couch. 😅 Can be found in almost any automotive store or automotive tool section in Walmart. Some versions even have flashlights on the end! @lemmy\_stitch @crossstitch

\#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem This is a Monster Dual Adjustable Dashboard Car Mount - Normally for two cell phones or one large one for use in a vehicle. But I found it and immediately knew it would help me immensely when I #CrossStitch because it's compact and it takes up far less room than my tablet's case/cover stand. You can find it at Advance Auto at https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/monster-double-vision-2-in-1-foldable-dash-mount-2mncm0112b0a2/12252355 or on Amazon

I propose a new hashtag for #CrossStitchers to follow! #FantasticCrossStitchTools or #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem . (Yes, kind of a shameless take on J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts series. But better! Because it has to do with #CrossStitch!)

So, this is to share all our favorite tools & where we found them so others can search them out & enjoy them too. If it's been gifted, it's okay to share it too, but each share has to include where you got it.

I have been informed that using packing tape to somewhat "laminate" labels on my attempts to reorganize my #EmbroideryFloss #Stash is too noisy at the current hour... Therefore I have been relegated

Otterly adorable

Done! Technically finished before my sister's birthday but needs to be framed and some real life stuff got in the way so will still be belated. But! It's done. And adorable.

I know this is #Embroidery instead of #CrossStitch (for the cross stitch groups), but I found this on X (that's such an awful name, isn't it?) and thought it was really cute so I wanted to share. I know there are some out there who organize similar animations with cross stitchers, too, but I've never gotten to participate.

Enjoy!

@lemmy\_stitch @crossstitch @embroidery @textilearts @fiberarts @fibrearts

I...kinda sorta bought some more embroidery floss today. Three thread packs at Hobby Lobby. They package it as "Artiste" but it's actually manufactured in Mexico by a company that sometimes goes by "Hilo Iris" and other times simply by "Iris." I found a color list from 2011 online, and a DMC conversation chart they compiled themselves. But, being the OCD idiot I am, I decided to try to match the threads myself...

I otter remember it's Wednesday more often

Getting close to wrapping this up. Will probably miss my sister's birthday, but Christmas is around the corner. Or it'll just be a belated gift.

  • @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch @christianstitchers @textilearts @fiberarts @fibrearts Well, now it's a #Cat toy. Our #Kitty was so depressed that Husband got gifts for his birthday and she didn't have anything to open, I felt obligated to give it to her so she didn't feel left out. So now I have to make a new one for *me*. At least she likes it! And she's not depressed anymore! 😄 @christianartists #CrossStitch #Embroidery #Sewing #Ladybug #Ladybugs #Cats #Catstodon #CatsOfMastodon #Handmade

  • I have a HUGE favor to ask of all my #StitchyFriends...
  • @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch @christianstitchers @textilearts @fiberarts @fibrearts I originally started this as a solution to my #BadHabit of holding my needle in my mouth while getting more embroidery floss ready in between colors as I #CrossStitch. My idea was 2 make a #PinCusion that had Velcro on the bottom, so I could either wear it as a bracelet while stitching or use it on a table if I needed to...

  • FINISHED: My Son Goku cross stitch is complete!
  • Thanks! This one was not expensive at all! The pattern was on Etsy for $4.99! It took me about a week to finish just kind of working on it when I had time!

I already had enough left over Aida cloth from a previous project and most of the floss I needed so I really only had to spend like $2 for the few colors I didn't already have lol

One way I've found to use the floss I already have instead of buying new floss for every project is this DMC substitution website . It's fantastic if you need a specific color that you're only going to use for like 20 stitches and you don't want to have to buy more floss for that one little part!

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem An after market cup holder/console organizer that normally would fit between your vehicle's console & one of your seats. BUT those who #CrossStitch, #Sew,
  • @DarkNightoftheSoul I'll see what aI can do. Thanks for the suggestion! 😄 I kind of tried a couple of times with a post or two, but sometimes it's harder to show if you're not *right there.* But I will try harder to do that. 😄 Thanks so much again! 😄

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem An after market cup holder/console organizer that normally would fit between your vehicle's console & one of your seats. BUT those who #CrossStitch, #Sew,
  • @DarkNightoftheSoul I'm sorry...not meaning to spam. I just love finding new "toys" to do #CrossStitch with, and I love to share the things that make me happy so others can enjoy them too! 😄

  • I have a HUGE favor to ask of all my #StitchyFriends...
  • @kat_angstrom I have some, but I normally stitch in-hand so a needle minder doesn't really work for me...but maybe I can attach one to my bobbin box! Then it doesn't HAVE to be attached to my work to work! Wow! #InspirationHasHit!!! 😄🎉😄🎉😄 What a brilliant idea! Thank you!!! 😄🎉😄🎉😄

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
  • @Stitch26 @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch I need to visit a hardware store. :) Or order from Temo - since it is almost certain to be smaller than it looks.

  • I have a HUGE favor to ask of all my #StitchyFriends...
  • @KittenBiscuits @Nima I know they make pincushion bracelets, but I would think it would be a bit awkward and I'd probably*still* forget to use it! 😅

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
  • @Sarah @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch The one my Husband has is actually REALLY SMALL. Until I actually saw it, I didn't think a grab tool could be that little and actually work! You may want to see if you can find one in a store to see for yourself if it may be the right size to help.

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
  • @Stitch26 @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch I work mostly with fingering yarn so the little plastic bits are teeny. I doubt if that would work. But that is a great price for the whole set.

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
  • @Sarah @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch
I'm sorry! Scratch that! They have a tool you might be able to use for that too! A flexible grab tool!!This pic is of a set Walmart carries for around $7. It includes the telescoping magnet tool, a magnetic bowl (also great to keep track of #PinsAndNeedles) and the flexible grab tool. You push the button on the end to open the little claw. These should also be found in most automotive tool stores. #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
  • @Sarah @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch Maybe you could get one and put double-sided tape on the end so they stick to the tape when you need to pick them up?? It *might* work! 😄

  • #FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
  • @Stitch26 @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch I am going to get one of these. Thanks for the suggestion. Just wish it would pick up plastic too (place marker circles).

  • @crossstitch @embroidery @textilearts @needlearts @fiberarts @fibrearts
  • @kerravonsen @lemmy_stitch @crochet @knitting Yes! Exactly! I usually work from a table or a TV tray, and we don't have much room, so it's perfect for me and it holds my tablet exactly where I can see it best! 😄

  • @crossstitch @embroidery @textilearts @needlearts @fiberarts @fibrearts
  • @Stitch26 @lemmy_stitch Oh that's interesting! You'd need a smooth surface for the suction cup to attach to, but yes, it does take up less space than a more common sloped stand. Not just useful for #Crosstitch but for #Crochet or #Knitting patterns as well, I think.
    @crochet @knitting

  • I have been informed that using packing tape to somewhat "laminate" labels on my attempts to reorganize my #EmbroideryFloss #Stash is too noisy at the current hour... Therefore I have been relegated
  • @verity_kindle I can imagine! Husband is trying 2 sleep in & we live in a small 1 bedroom apartment, so I don't have any other rooms 2 go in & close a door 2 keep noise down. It's a bit frustrating because I *really* want 2 get it all finished before the weekend so I can design or stitch. But...if it was me, I wouldn't be as nice as 2 simply say, "Why don't you work on #CrossStitch for awhile?" instead of having 2 apologize later for sounding like a combo of Yosemite Sam & the Tasmanian Devil...

  • @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch @embroidery @textilearts @fiberarts @fibrearts So! I've posted the Iris Color Chart, their conversions and my own conversions in case anyone else buys Hobby Lobby's thread packs and wants to have an easy(er) time of converting to DMC. They are the Primary, Pastel and Variegated Colors thread packs, and Iris apparently sells to Michael's and other retailers too. #HappyStitching! 😄
