as I'm sure you're all aware, the sensational 'owl of the year 2023' competition is currently ongoing, and one of today's second round matchups sees the gigantic snowy owl facing off against the titanic short eared owl (making them both seem normal sized - joke by D. Mitchell & R. Webb, 2004)
I would like to take a moment to thank the short eared owl for having a schedule that lines up with when it's possible to photograph it. So many owls hunt only at night which is very inconsiderate, especially when you consider the weight of camera equipment and the price of train tickets in this economy. The short eared owl is a true Owl of the People (OOP) and as such, deserves your vote.
Please consider some of the following points when casting your vote today:
Short eared owl:
very nice fellow
considerate (see above)
useful sleep schedule
lovely colouration (looks good in evening light - see photo)
definitely wide awake at all times
flat at the front, surprising it is still so aerodynamic
long wings mean this chap is easily identified as an owl at a distance (misidentification as plump seagul possible)
often comes in pairs (friendly)
charming
thank you for your attention & for looking at the first (somewhat) successful photograph of an owl i have taken peace lads and lasses x
this is unironically one of my favourite photographs: you can make out the owl in the field just to the right of the bottom centre. I think he / she found a mouse or something and made a catch. I love the sense of scale you get with the tiny owl in the foreground and the massive wind turbines behind.
Most owls will sit around up high and listen or watch for food, but Shorty will fly low over the ground scanning for tasty voles and other little yummy things.
Oof! SEO definitely needs some propaganda! They need to overcome a 20 point gap right now! But who knows, the day is still long. Thanks for helping the OOP in getting some well-deserved attention, to stop the hegemony of the Snowy Owl.
