After the astronomical pricing debacle with Sync for Lemmy... I instantly bought Boost ad free! Thanks @[email protected] <3 Loved Boost for Reddit and I'm excited to keep using your app for Lemmy!
Oh BEYOND out of their minds. Sync is certainly a great app. But like, I can buy a game for what they wanted. I was a Boost user on Reddit, had that labour of love feel to it.
I paid $1 for Reddit Sync Pro and used it for hours a day for 13 years. In that time the developer provided dozens of updates, multiple major overhauls, and continual usage of functionality that requires the developer to pay ongoing API fees to provide.
Sync for Lemmy pricing is exactly as much as it should be.
$29 CAD to remove ads in Sync, while Boost is $4.39 CAD.
I'd rather pay $4.39 and donate when I can. Overall Boost will end up getting more money from me in the end. It's hard to justify nearly $30 on a platform that may not survive, but easier to justify less than $5 with frequent donations.
I've legit already "boosted the rocket" in Boost for Lemmy. My issue with Sync was the fucking audacity to ask for 30$. My google opinion rewards will slowly funnel their way into rocket fuel out of mere respect for him being humble.
Lemmy is fairly shit, but I spend a lot of time here nonetheless. I've probably got more than 30 euro worth of value from it. But, that said I cant bring myself to pay that kind of money for an app.
Again the other other side of that is subscription fees but we all hate them so I think the pricing is justifiable but not for me personally
Sorry I'm out of the loop, but just searched it. Looks like Sync is $2/month or $17/year, is that the pricing people were upset about or? Because that hardly seems like anything to bulk at, but I don't know the whole situation either.
People were far more upset at the one time fee to remove ads being 30$. The monthly subscriptions include extra features. I used sync with an adblock so I never saw the ads anyway. I wouldn't have seen them on boost either but it's the principle behind it.
Seems like a pretty standard privacy policy, almost identical to Sync, Relay, etc. Of course not everyone wants that, but I don't see how it's "really unsettling"
The app is nice, but you get the Google ads in the free version. Personally I think you can have mostly the same experience without Ads on some other app like Connect.
It should be a price upfront. Instead it bakes ads into the app, ads which aren't even present on the instances. I find it a bit disrespectful towards the hosts who maintain their instances for free and only ask for donations.
As a long time Sync user I guess I already knew Sync was my long term client, and $20 for an ad free version for the lifetime of the app doesn't sound so bad. The developer is great with adding things the community wants and updates frequently. But having a choices is always a good thing!
