I'm just dreaming now, but what I'd love to see is the City enter a partnership with a non-profit like National Capital Freenet to set up and maintain the technical infrastructure for federated communication tools. But a) don't know if that's something NCF is interested in or even has the capacity to support, and b) it's never gonna happen anyway.
I'd love to see Mastodon take off, but until it increases its utility for journalists (and influencers) it's going to be hard to replace other microblogging apps.
