The notion that the U.S. could produce all of its food domestically is nice, but very far from reality.

My kid had this idea in high school to turn our yard into a garden so we could be self sustaining without having to buy food.
I explained that in order to feed 3 people, 3 meals a day, we would need approximately 1 acre per person, or 43,560 square feet.
So for three people, 130,680 square feet.
Our yard is approximately 1,900 square feet.
