Internet gets wind that author of the markview.nvim plugin is student from Bangladesh who wrote it entirely on a phone, now everybody is trying to get them a laptop. (Links in post body)
Granted, I am not a software engineer, but in my personal experience I find simply using my smart phone to be convenient enough these days that transitioning into a different paradigm to accomplish a task almost always feels more inconvenient. Even when I want to or need to do a little bit of programming.
I guess I’m kind of wondering if anybody actually asked him why he doesn’t use a laptop, because it sort of seems like people are assuming that because he’s from Bangladesh, it must be because he can’t afford one and I think that’s extremely presumptuous and potentially hurtful.
Nah, all good. The question was asked and answered on Github. They also mentioned on Reddit that hardware is very overpriced in Bangladesh and they are too young to have an ID and thus bank account.
Interesting! I wonder if it's an age thing or just personality or what. I feel the exact opposite, having to do anything outside the few routine things for which I use my phone feels horrible. Like there's this noticeable "blocked" or "constrained" feeling in my head, often before I even start, like I'm pre-annoyed.
Then again I feel limited even by a laptop when really working on a project, so maybe I just have some baked-in preference for "interface sprawl", maybe you'd call it.
It's the keyboard that gets me. Symbols are in weird places on most software keyboards, and the lack of physical feedback really destroys my typing accuracy. My fat fingers can't type the correct keys it seems, so I rely heavily on autocorrect, which doesn't translate well to code. It's simply tedious to write more than a couple of sentences.
