Due to the lack of a comma in the last paragraph, I was seriously confused for a moment. Lol. I thought it said, "Dentist's office is a tooth cult temple cellphone store".
Clearly, that dentist is an economic genius & is trying to corner multiple markets by tackling all four in one establishment! Genius, I say!
Honestly sounds like a Brookstone product. "Here's a combo alarm clock, beer cooler, golf ball cleaner, massage chair you never knew you wanted until now!"
Those are the kinds of serendipitous misunderstandings I like!
Apparently a line break in the text box on Connect isn't recognized as such when posting.
Postmates/Doordash/Uber Eats: a divination-based courier service - "The crystal ball said I'm supposed to look for you. Got something I'm supposed to deliver. Let's see here..."
Software engineer: wizard creating thousands of castings of magic mouth to create a machine as a lab assistant - "One of the mouths keeps repeating 'syntax error' every time i active the first. Well there goes the last month's worth of castings..."
Tech support: warlocks in the employ of a kingdom that gains it power from eldritch beings - "Have you tried turning the ether blood connection off and back on again?"
Birds as pilots? Either as in you're riding on their back or in some sort of carrier that they can hold, which is a concept I have played around with. Or as what I envisioned for the modern age of my animals world, birds are more likely to pilot aircrafts than other animals because their brains are already adapted to flight and can pick up the training on flying aircraft really quickly.
I like “[insert magic-user class] is a stage magician,” whatever that means in the particular setting. IMO it works best when “stage magician” is well-defined and distinct from authentic magic (again, consistent with setting, like “Vegas entertainer” in the late 20th century, “spiritual medium” for early 20th, “medicine show [salesperson]” for the 19th, “alchemist with patrons” for Medieval to early enlightenment, and so on, though inauthenticity or bad reputation are usually an important part of the fun for me). It can drive some excellent dramatic irony.
