YouTube desperately need user chosen content preferences.
I am tired of getting recommendations mostly made either of corporate giants AND videos with sub 100 views from channels I haven't ever seen on topics I've never touched. I want broaders topics, but I get recommended exactly what I don't want to see: startup creators and huge entities "creators". I want medium sized ones. The ones where they're not just pumping content out for profit and/or propaganda, but have the deep polish. I get everything I don't. Users should be able to opt into what size of a creator they want to see. I bet there are people who may wish to only see tiny creators or maybe only corporate, or even all. But the current system makes it so I don't find stuff I want to see. :/

I never sign in, I delete cookies everytime my browser quits, but Youtube keeps pushing right-wing, incel bullshit at me
I guess it shouldn't bother me, after all I try my best to avoid watching anything on youtube that I didn't go there to watch in the first place but nevertheless, it's hard not to see the clickbaity thumbnails for suggested videos to the right of the one I'm watching, and also, when I'm researching something it's undeniable that sometimes it genuinely was actually useful to have another video on the topic suggested that was relevant.
But this has really started to freak me out, Youtube has gone bananas recently. I'm constantly getting suggestions decrying woke this or woke that, in particular a lot of videos of compilations of police bodycam footage with titles about various people being 'idiots' or 'entitled' or various other terms suggesting a strong pro-authority angle. Those suggestions were annoying but it's starting to get disturbing now because they're veering strongly towards incel themes. Today I've seen suggestions for: a video about catching a woman faking a rape accusation 'caught on camera', another about a 'high value' man winning in court against a woman wanting him to pay reparations because she refused a DNA test, another about why men don't approach women anymore, and on and on. They stick in my mind because I can see exactly the the world view this constellation of fucking garbage is catering to.
On the one hand, I guess I could take some comfort in the fact that if the algorithms have gotten it this far wrong then maybe Google really didn't manage to snag so much data about me as I assumed but on the other, it's definitely used something it reckons it knows about me to make these assumptions. I can't for the life of me figure out where the fuck it got the idea I would like this or why it's so persistent despite the lack of positive reinforcement. I am not signed in, so I can't even attempt to manually give negative feedback and as far as I can tell people who do that say it doesn't work anyway.
This all seems to have coincided with a dramatic change in recent viewing habits, so I'm guessing that's what has triggered this, but it's still weird as fuck that there's apparently some overlap here. I've been in the market for a new phone and so have been watching a lot of videos about various phones and I was also considering a pixel as one of the options because if I went with that, I could use GrapheneOS. This has meant watching a lot of content content on GrapheneOS as well. This does seem to have had the expected effect of a lot of suggestions along those lines but it's definitely coincided with the fucking alt-right starter kit. This is certainly a counterintuitive link. Shit makes me want to puke. Normally when I see these kinds of surveillance economy mechanisms at work I just look at them with a detached kind of wry amusement at the shitty state of things but this actually really did offend me, I mean yuck, makes my fucking skin crawl.

Have you noticed, in "Watch Later" playlist YouTube no longer remembers position in playlist when you complete or exit a video?
This was on the roku app on a TV, haven't explored other platforms yet.
I'm assuming this is to disable the ability for users to quickly start, back/exit and restart a video until an ad doesn't play. Eternally user hostile, enshitification bullshit.

Why does it take so many steps to tell Youtube "I've already watched this" ?
YouTube Video
I have soooo many videos that I've already watched.
5 clicks in a context menu is wayyyyyy to much
It should be one click.
And "I've already watched this"
Doesn't meant I don't want to see that youtuber any less of course.
It's that specific video, because I'VE ALREADY WATCHED IT !

YouTube implements "vote fuzzing," right?
I don't really care how many people see my videos or if nobody sees them at all, because they're just clips of happy moments in my life for my own memories, but a few days ago I posted a video and it got
Day one: 4 views and one thumbs up.
Day two: 1 view and no thumbs up 🤔
Day three: ZERO VIEWS and one thumbs up.
I find this hilarious. and miffed at YouTube for manipulating things for no reason.
I'm pretty sure even based on viewer response, "views" cannot go backwards LOL.

Is there a way to block specific users from viewing my YouTube channel?
Seriously, I have a stalker and I CAN'T HELP posting videos about where I am and what I'm doing, and I have a feeling I'm going to need a gun to protect myself from this guy.
I'd rather just block him from ever seeing my videos.

- www.bleepingcomputer.com YouTube stops recommending videos when signed out of Google
YouTube has changed how it works for people not signed into Google account or using incoginto mode, and it's not showing suggested videos anymore. This change, which is being tested with some random users, shows a very simple YouTube homepage without any videos or tips on what to watch.

Are custom video IDs possible? Look at the URL!
YouTube Video
We've always thought that YouTube assigns a 11-character base64 video ID randomly to each upload. However, the video The ATM Glitch That Made a Millionaire by Joeseppi has the ID
m4Fi_a9QATM
that ends withATM
, which is a 1 in 262 144 chance . The first 6 characters are also kinda sus.Do you think joeseppi write a script to repeatedly start uploading the video, check the URL and abort if it didn't contain the three letters? Or found a glitch similar to the one used by bad apple but it's a QR code that links to this video? Or is it pure luck?
I could not find an official statement on that, and was unable to contact him.

Did something happen to YouTube subtitles in the past few months?
Did something happen to YouTube subtitles in the past few months?
I’ve been watching YouTube with subtitles for years and while they’ve never been perfect I’ve started to notice some very strange issues with them recently which did not used to occur.
The most recent example I’ve seen was from a woodworking video where the word size was subtitled as “siiz”. I’ve also noticed things like random capitalization happening more often, like “sorry for not Uploading recently” or “thanks For watching”.
Are they using a new algorithm for auto-subtitles maybe?

By paying for premium or watching ads, you fund Google doing this to creators
YouTube Video
Creators are getting demonetized for no fault on their own and cannot appeal. Furthermore, they're banned from making new accounts, so Google entirely cuts off their ability to prosper if they made it their full-time job. Remember to use uBlock to block off the ads (if it doesn't work on Chromium browsers, get Firefox, it works here, at least for me - might be regional) and under no circumstances pay YT or through YT. If you want to support creators, do it outside of the Google ecosystem so Google doesn't profit to further enable their abuse and life-ruining machine.

browser: how to control volume level watching youtube shorts.
When watching regular youtube vids using a web browser, you control the volume level of the video using the volume control in the bottom left of the video.
When watching youtube shorts, there's a speaker button that mutes or unmutes the video, but there seems to be no way to set the volume level. Am I missing something or does youtube just not include that feature for shorts?

Why do some videos automatically go to the mini player after about 1 second of playback?
On the website via desktop computers.
Drives me nuts as I never use the mini player function and it's a huge and frustrating disruption that I didn't ask for.
EDIT: actually I think I figured it out and it's probably nothing to do with YouTube apart from an unexpected design decision that's probably been around for a while and I never noticed. Turns out if you click and drag a video you're watching anywhere around the screen it launches the mini player. I'm not used to this kind of thing on desktops but I guess it's becoming the norm and could be helpful. I think I've been accidentally clicking and dragging just a little bit sometimes.

Can I rant about "YouTube Kids" for a second?
What is with the "made for kids" bs? I know it's about COPPA compliance, but I also think YouTube bears some responsibility for how stupid they have made their system.
Basically, any video that is "made for kids" lacks most basic features. You can't leave comments, you can't add the video to the playlist. You can't use the miniplayer in the app, which is a UI feature. Why? Because the people who wrote COPPA are a bunch of boomers who don't understand the internet.
This would all be fine, because I don't tend to watch content that is actually for children. But as someone who has helped others upload video to YouTube, I know first hand how easy Google makes it for people to want to click the "made for kids" button even when their content is targeted to the general audience. Basically, people think "well, there's nothing in this video that is unsafe for children, so I must check the box then" which effectively handicaps anyone watching their video from using the most basic features.
This shit makes me so fucking angry.

My videorant thing about getting my first copyright claim as a new youtuber.
I 100% believe my usage was fair but the YouTube appeals system is skewed so hard in favour of the copyright holder (in this case a record label) so I decided not to push it.
Has anyone out there ever fought for fair use and won?
