Just a sentient pile of noodles. Things I enjoy: trying to make a game, wasting money on nostalgic crap I don't have room for, retro gaming and fiddling with devices, whining ineffectually as we slide into dystopia.

Which Anbernic device colours do you prefer?
  • I'm always a sucker for US SNES colors. Been eyeing the RG353PS, but that grey and purple 353P is mighty nice.

  • What's everyone playing?
  • ZombiU sounds pretty cool, I'll add it to the list. I might have to go back and continue OOT at some point. Feels like one of those games I should at least finish.

  • What's everyone playing?
  • Yeah, I hear you with the nostalgia bit. Definitely smooths out some of the rough parts. I actually skipped the N64 Zelda games back in the day, and my Ocarina playthrough on the 3DS stalled a while back for the reasons you listed.

I'm still early on with NC2, but I would classify it as survival horror. There hasn't been much in the way of puzzles or environmental backtracking, but health is fairly limited. I managed to accidentally overwrite my save state with 1 hit left on the old health meter, which has been fun.

It's full of 90's horror vibes and has a soundtrack by Rob Zombie. Combat is mostly melee based so far, but very clunky. It's also had a full 3d swimming section with an air meter which the controls made truly terrifying.

I haven't played ZombiU. The Steam version requiring a UPlay account has kept me from picking it up there. Is it pretty good?

  • I think it was around the GameCube era that using the right stick started being common for me. And I used to invert the vertical camera controls, I think that was a hold over from old school joysticks. Pretty crazy to see how everything's evolved.

I remember when the OG Resident Evil came out. I'd say it was one of my seminal game play experiences. Going from the likes of Super Mario World to that was pretty mind blowing at the time! Although the tank controls are now maligned, they do give you consistent directional control through viewpoint changes (up always moves you forward). It probably takes a good deal of getting used to from today's standards, but you can also get pretty good with it if you keep going.

  • What's everyone playing?
  • Been playing a bit of Nightmare Creatures 2 for the PS1. It's delightfully janky as many of these early 3D games are. I think for the question on finding these old games different, yeah being used to a second stuck for the camera it kind of feels like playing with an arm tied behind your back. But it's also a cool era where everyone was trying to figure out how to make 3D games.

  • No problem! The links were good, I just got confused since it shows the markdown in the preview and thought they weren't working.

  • Koriki for RG35XX Beta 0.8 has been released.
  • I think so. Just waiting for that 1.0.

  • It's up, but looks like I formatted the links wrong. I'll edit once I figure that out...

  • Koriki for RG35XX Beta 0.8 has been released.

Per developer acmeplus, Beta version 0.8 of Koriki for the RG35XX is now available. You can read about the changes in this latest version and find the download link posted here.

Koriki is a still in development custom firmware that combines the SimpleMenu front end with a fork of the GPU enabled firmware from Batocera (in fact, it has replaced a cancelled port of Batocera to the RG35XX). While the RG35XX ships with a Quad-core PowerVR SGX544MP GPU onboard, it is disabled in the original firmware, and thus in Garlic OS. Seeing it enabled should give the 35XX a bit more juice.

A more in depth article on Koriki is available at Retro Handheld Guides.

  • I'll give it a shot as time permits today. I haven't made a thread on kbin yet. To match the formatting of your existing threads on here is it better to do it as a post, article, or image?

  • Welcome to /m/Anbernic
  • For me, the coolest bit is that they've managed to enable the GPU, which should open the doors for all kinds of stuff (and hopefully some faster arcade emulation?).

There's a bit on it from the developer here:
    https://ko-fi.com/post/RG35XX-Getting-the-GPU-to-work-Part-1-T6T0JCHY2

I think Batocera is doing this as well, but haven't been following that one as much.

  • Just ordered some screen protectors, and it did some with a case, so there's that at least.

Have you been following the progress on Koriki? Pretty exciting stuff.

  • A starting guide to kbin.social + support thread for new users
  • Thanks for the guide! It's been really helpful so far.

After a few days here, I have a couple of questions that I don't think I've seen covered:

    1. Is there a way to view a list of the magazines I'm subscribed to so that I can view them directly? Sorting my home feed by subscribed tends to bury the less active ones, and I have to search for them manually.

    2. Is there a way to disable the sidebar completely? I don't really find the random content useful, and it shows me adult content even though I have that hidden in my settings.

  • Welcome to /m/Anbernic
  • Finished setting it up, everything seems to be working well with Garlic OS and dual cards. I love the screen on this thing, and being able to jump between games and have it save your progress automatically with the double press on the menu button feels really slick.
Was a bit nervous of the build quality going on from reading things online, but seems nice and solid so far. Came with the new 2600mAh battery, no rattling shoulder buttons or screen falling off. Kind of botched the screen protector, which ended up in the trash, but I'm maybe 50/50 with those overall, haha.

  • Welcome to /m/Anbernic
  • Nice. Yeah, this will be my first. It was a really tough choice between the RG35XX and the Mini+!

  • Welcome to /m/Anbernic
  • Thanks! What's your favorite retro handheld?

  • Glad to see this here! My 35XX should be coming in this weekend, already have the SD cards ready to go and waiting not so patiently.
