Sites to Discover Lemmy/Fediverse Communities, Instances and Stats
  • Yeah the community search on Lemmy leaves a lot to be desired. There's no sort function and I'd like to be able to list them in order of activity. At this point I don't know what to do other than scroll through pages and pages of listings. I'll give those searches a try, very helpful.

  • POLL: Decide on the future of /r/Piracy!
  • I'm done with Reddit. This latest debacle prompted me to look into Reddit's history, had no idea before. What an awful company. Also a community not subject to corporate interest is better for everyone. Anyway, I'm not going back there so if the sub gets closed down, no skin off my nose. Yeah do what you will.

  • My /r/piracy troll post just hit reddit frontpage!
  • Guess Reddit is going to be taken over by alt-right trolls too.

Haha, that worked for Fox News in the USA.

Lots of “you don’t understand, Reddit is a COMPANY!

That's the problem, corporate interest. We'd all be better served by a community open source platform like the Fediverse, politics aside.

  • Why are some of my subscriptions Pending?
  • Same problem here. Lemmy.ml is the root instance, as mentioned it may be overloaded and not responding to requests. Or it could be some kind of bug, in any case you can still select it and see the community.

  • Not joking, I've looked into VMs myself and most are about twice that rate.

  • Man that is cheap, 80 USD a year, what a deal.

  • Though honestly the more I see about Reddit, the more glad I am to get away from them. I usually don't care much about politics especially when it comes to entertainment and media, but I just watched a video that was rather shocking about the antics that go on there.

  • let's cut the "Reddit" circle jerk and start actually making content
  • Yeah the internet is abuzz with Spez's antics, don't expect that to die down for a while. If they follow through with the deadline it will be even worse.

Still we can add other stuff, maybe drown out the roar a bit. Can always use more communities, I have some good ones now, but I still need a couple I'm lacking.

  • someone told me that we can see stuff from Beehaw, but Beehaw can’t see stuff from us.

Admins of an instance can block other instances. If you scroll to the bottom of the front page on your instance you see an "Instances" link that shows which are linked and which are blocked. The instance you log into may have a few blocked, but most should be linked.

Evidently Beehaw has decided not to participate with a good number of outside instances. This is a toxic approach and defeats the whole point of the Fediverse. They have the right to operate how they want, but they should be avoided in protest.

Join a Lemmy instance in your country for best internet performance. Here's a list that provides a sort on country; https://the-federation.info/platform/73

  • I'm getting older and don't pick up new tech the way I used to. It's not terribly complicated though. I really don't like learning new tech anymore, but I got it figured out. Some of the instances have user guides that are quick and helpful, try this one; https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/2212

  • It's like a mass exodus. I read on one instance how their workload jumped twenty times almost overnight. They'll get it sorted out I'm sure. With more subscribers comes more opportunity for help. Just going to be some lag there.

  • Same for me, grew up on message boards in the 90's. Used classic internet forums for a long time. Then finally Reddit. Ready to move on to the Fediverse now. Totally has that 90's feel of Usenet groups, old is new again.

  • Reddit refugee here. I've had Lemmy bookmarked for some time, but I'm now getting active, have an instance, subscribed to some communities. I think I'll be happy to leave Reddit behind, I mean really, FOSS versus corporate BS.

  • Can't choose a secure email provider!
  • I'm using fastmail.com as my email provider in the USA. They're a small company based out of Australia with global servers. They pride themselves on privacy and security. Been using them for several years now. They're not the cheapest game in town, but they have an impressive feature set. They actually host a domain and web site for me that's included with my mid-tier account fees. I have zero complaints with them.

Even paid accounts with companies like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo do not guarantee privacy. Yahoo has been known to scan email content for targeted advertising. Discovering that is what actually motivated me to use a paid service.

  • Mates, today without warning, the reddit royal navy attacked. I've been demoded by the admins.
  • Good point, I doubt many other subs have escape plans. So yeah we'd be the first to jump ship. Not a good control group for an experiment.

  • Doing a reverse lookup on the IP shows a German (.de) registrar and nameserver so I would guess Germany, but it's entirely possible to have registration and server locations in different countries. Maybe our Captain could tell us, but I don't know if that's sensitive information.

  • I'm new to the fediverse as well. I checked out a few other ones, Kbin, Mastadon, etc. I definitely like Lemmy the best. It's the most "Reddit like." Say what you may about Reddit, but it has some nice features.

  • Reddit built their whole business on unpaid janitors. That's the thanks people get for working free. Anyway they just keep doubling down, has to be a conspiracy.

  • Looks like this one is in Germany (lemmy.dbzer0.com). I'm in the USA and I was getting big lags and sluggish response. I found one in my region and it's very snappy (lemmy.one). When you find a close instance, you can search for non-local communities and subscribe to them that way, just select the "all" button next to the communities search box.

  • I just got my authorization for lemmy.one. It's close to me so it's super fast, was having real problems with the local instance here, not the operator's fault, just my relative location. Anyway I'm all set to browse the fediverse with Lemmy, reminds me of the old days of the internet, before everything was monetized. Reddit did me a favor by blowing me out.
