Miami Mayor Francis Suarez files to run for president in 2024 | CNN Politics
  • Pence is a religious zealot, and I think he believes God is calling him to run, so he doesn't care what the polls or common sense seem to say. He believes that somehow God's plan will work out. We'll see how that goes for him...

  • Going back to Reddit feels bad
  • What's sad is that back in the old days of Reddit, Reddiquette was actually a thing and people followed that rule more. In recent years, though, it feels like Reddiquette is completely dead.

Post any kind of dissenting opinion and you'll get downvoted into absolute oblivion. And I'm not just speaking about politics. You can write a well thought out comment in any sub that goes against the grain, and the culture is just totally to downvote for disagreement. I think my most downvoted comment of all time on Reddit was on r/juicing when I questioned whether carrot juice was actually effective for depression lol.

  • Can anyone tell me what the "196" community is? If I sort my feed by All, it gives me a ton of memes from there but I can't tell what it is.

  • Yeah, the niche subreddits are what I really hate to leave behind. I could care less about leaving r/politics, r/AskReddit, etc. But I'll miss r/EtrianOdyssey (niche video game series).

But we'll just have to create these communities on Lemmy. I'm in it for the long haul.

  • What is your favorite niche game GENRA ? Give a reason and examples too !
  • I love the Mystery Dungeon games. Most people know about the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon ones, but there are also Etrian Mystery Dungeon I & II, Shiren the Wanderer titles, Taloon's Great Adventure, Chocobo Mystery Dungeon, and more!

I like them because they are pretty casual games you can pick up and put down easily, but if you want to get deeper into the strategy, you can. We didn't get these games in the West until the Nintendo DS era, but they started with the SNES in Japan.

  • A helpful list of logical fallacies
  • Ad hominem is, I think, the most prevalent and harmful fallacy on the whole internet and society at large. In fact, not to make everything about the Reddit situation, but we saw u/spez recently employ it by evading questions and trying to impugn developers.

And of course, in the political space, we see it all the time to try and dismiss any pro-worker arguments. In the United States, labeling someone as a socialist has been used as a Q.E.D. in itself for decades. I hope that's changing.

  • reddit refugee here! wondering if this community is still active
  • I've subscribed to several Xbox communities on different Lemmy instances. Hoping that one of them emerges as the "main" one.

  • Yeah, I didn't understand that either. Its not like video games are some sort of resource that lives may depend on, like r/ukraine which is more understandable. Oh God we wouldn't want to miss a Nintendo Direct or something, would we? 🙄

  • Disturbingly, there is really no way to know who actually owns a private company like Reddit. Once it goes public, then the owners will be the shareholders (and in reality, the owners are the major shareholders who have a controlling stake).

The only clue to the current ownership is whatever management wishes to disclose. Spez wrote a blog post in 2021 indicating that they issued $250M in "series E funding" to existing and new investors.

If there are any finance bros around here, they may be able to dig up some sort of disclosures from bond auctions to try and see who bought it.

The only confirmed investor I know about is Tencent. They invested in 2019. Its possible they were also some of the "existing investors" Spez referred to in 2021.

Bottom line: nobody knows who owns Reddit. But apparently the owners think this guy Spez is a good fit to run their company, somehow.

  • Are we blocked from seeing NSFW communities on Beehaw? (Not an issue, I would create an alt for that anyway. Just curious)

  • Gamepass vs Physical games

I just got an XSX today and I'm excited to get playing some games!

This might be a stupid question, but do you guys find that Gamepass is worth it? My main concern is what if I start playing a game and then they take it away; does that happen often?

I want to play MS Flight Sim 2020 and can't decide whether to buy the game or just get GamePass.

Also, is GamePass Ultimate worth the premium? Seems like the main difference is that you also get the catalog of EA games, is that basically the difference?

welcome, new Beehaw users and lurkers. an FAQ and introduction to Beehaw
  • So I've started to get familiar with some of the other instances that show up in my "all" feed. Lemmy.ml, lemmy.world are the main two. But what is blahaj.zone? I see that one quite a bit but no one has ever talked about it.

  • The Last Page Of The Internet [defector.com]
  • Even if it weren't nonprofit, it would be better run as a worker cooperative where the employees of Reddit made the decisions. Instead, its the capricious whims of Mr. u/spez

  • FTC to file injunction seeking to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard
  • Me too. Honestly, Microsoft seems to be in a pretty distant third place in the console wars, so the antitrust concerns don't make a lot of sense to me. Even if Microsoft did make CoD Xbox exclusive, I don't think that would be that big of a deal for Sony and Nintendo, as they have countless other draws.

Additionally, I too think Blizzard is a shit company and there's nowhere to go but up under new ownership.

  • Jerboa 0.0.33-alpha
  • I'm not even joking when I say that this app, despite being in alpha, is a more pleasant experience than the official Reddit app.

    • Jerboa has not begged me to turn on notifications
    • Jerboa has not yelled at me for taking a screenshot or begged me to send it as a link to the site instead
    • Jerboa has not warned me that I am "low on coins"
    • Jerboa has not tried to make me create an NFT avatar
    • Jerboa contains more formatting options in comments than the Reddit app (!)
    • Jerboa is smart enough to autopopulate the link title when I highlight text to be converted to a link. Reddit app still lacks this feature (!)
  • r/linux is private now
  • Awesome. The Linux community should be among the vanguard of this whole effort given our philosophy.

Honestly I've only been on Lemmy for a few days and I don't anticipate going back to Reddit. I'll probably use Reddit for IT help queries periodically but that's it. I like Lemmy quite a bit more.
