The Absurdity of the Return-to-Office Movement
  • I work from home and still prefer living in the city center, despite being more expensive. Not due to the museums but due to the closeness to restaurants, pubs and clubs. How am I supposed to go back home if I am drunk and I cannot drive. The city center is for the people not for office buildings.

  • The Verge Takes on Self-Hosting for the Masses
  • I really hope so, it should be taught, because for me it was a slow learning process. First I started using Obsidian, and moving all my notes from Evernote, Notion, and others manually. After that I moved to Logseq, which is like Obsidian but open-source. And the last step was using an open-source syncing tool (Syncthing) to have my notes synced locally in all devices. And now I have been 2 years self-hosting my notes in a really easy way.

  • I also use Fitotrack app for saving locally in my Android phone my running/hiking routes.

For daily step counter, I use Paseo app. For sync weight data from my Xiaomi Mi Scale, I use OpenScale app. Both apps are FOSS available in F-Droid and store data only locally in your phone.

  • Trying out a new chorded layout
  • Thanks for your answer :) And how did you configure the chordes? Did you add them all manually in layout file and compile it in ZMK/QMK to flash your controller? Or you just mapped ASETNIOP keys in your controller and you installed a sepparated software on your PC? In that case, which one?

  • I do not use it for gamming, so I cannot answer that, but maybe you can use only the left part and the mouse for shooter games. I would need to remap AWSD because I use Colemak layout or maybe use another layer to move to Qwerty.

However, I use it everyday for working as IT consultant, I don't do programming really often anymore, but I don't have problems typing numbers or special characters (;,[]/<>...). In fact, you just need to memorize where they are and the layer, but your fingers move much less than in a full size keyboard.

  • What are your thoughts about Obsidian not being Open Source?
  • You're welcome :)

Yes, LogSeq admits standard MD format for links and also their simpler way to do links to notes, which I personally use. But all are supported:

    • Standard MD link to image: ![image name] (../assets/image.jpg)
    • Standard MD link to note: [Note Name] (Note Name.md)
    • Standard MD link to website: [Note Name] (https://website.com)
    • Logseq simpler link to note : [[Note Name]]
  • What are your thoughts about Obsidian not being Open Source?
  • Hi! I used Obsidian for several years, but the open source topic is also a concern for me, so 6 months ago, I decided to move to LogSeq.

To be honest, the migration was not that easy, but not due to the different Markdown format, but for the change of methodology of writing notes. In Obsidian I was used to work with folders, but in LogSeq, I added all my notes in the same folder and started working with links. I created a note as a list of constents to link all the other notes, and now I have a nice personal knowledge database. So I don't agree when you say that LogSeq is focus on journaling, because in my personal notetaking process I almost don't use it. But it is true that I use it a lot in my job workflow, it's really useful to start taking notes directly on the current day on the journal section and if you need to expand some topic, you just create a link to a new note using [[double brackets]] as in Obsidian.

  • My ortholinear 40%
  • Don't remerber exactly, because despite I build it some months ago, the pieces I bougot them almost a year ago. Anyways here it is an estimation:

    • 1 PCB KpRepublic BM40: 45€
    • 50 Gateron Brown Switches: 15€
    • 48 keycaps XDA: 25€
    • 1 Aluminium case for BM40: 25€
    • 1 Carbon fiber plate for BM40: 10€

So, around 120€. I mean, it is not cheap, but I am really happy with the result. But I am sure it is not toe most expensive thing you can find into this rabbithole 😂

  • My ortholinear 40%

Hi! It is my first post in this community in Lemmy. I just wanted to show my ortholinear KB. It is a KpRepublic BM40 (plank-like) with Cherry Brown switches.

I built it 8 months ago and I love it, for every day work and for working elsewhere beacause it is very easy to carry in my backpack.

    I hope you like it.

Aurora Corne low profile split keyboard wireless

Hi! I am excited to share my new build in this new community in Lemmy.

It is an Aurora Corne Low Profile keyboard. I just wanted to do a wireless split keyboard as thin as possible.

I bought all the pieces in splitkb.com:

    • Aurora Corne PCB (comes with diodes and choc hotswap sockets to be soldered)
    • 2 Nice!nano v2 USB-C controllers
    • 2 batteries 301230 3.7V 110mAh
    • Kaihl Choc low profile Orange switches.
    • Choc keycaps
    • Carbon fiber plate
    • Case (I have not bought any, I've just made a wooden panel, cutting it ad hoc), but I may buy one in the future or 3D print one, let me know what you think about it.

About the building process, I can say that I was afraid of soldering, but it was fun and easier than expected. I struggled a little more with the firmware configuration, because I was used to QMK but the nice!nano controller uses ZMK so it was a little different.

After configuring my Colemak layout and my layers on the firmware, the flashing process is pretty strait forward. Also the bluetooth connection integrated in the nice!nano was connected easily to my PC.

However, after 1 month of use, I have started feeling some issues in the left part of the keyboard, mainly with modifiers, such as Ctrl, Shift, Alt, and some letters. When I keep them pressed they are not recognized and I have to repress them. I don't think it is a firmware issue, because I have tried different configurations in ZMK and now all of them fail with the same keys, independently of whatever character I map on those keys. I am thinking that it maybe due to some diode that may be missoldered or some pin in the controller, because the first days it worked fine. And I have tested the same configuration as those days, and now I am getting these issues.

    Any suggestion?

    !
