In Peru, discovery of ancient ruins outpaces authorities' ability to care for them
  • That's wonderful! Whereabouts are you traveling, if you don't mind me asking? I was mostly in the north around Trujillo, but I spent a couple weeks in Lima once, and a month in and around Cusco when I made the trek to Aguas Calientes, then Machu Picchu.

I've been itching to get back to Perú ever since!

  • I lived in Perú for a while on a study abroad/student exchange program and can confirm -- you can't swing a cat in Perú without hitting some archeological wonder, and it's not just Lima. I spent some time in the northern deserts, up near Chiclayo and Lambayeque, and visited so many fantastic Moche sites that they almost started to get boring by the end.

What stuck with me the most, however, as walking through the sand dunes and literally tripping over ancient pottery that was just sitting in the sand, partially exposed. Ceramics were everywhere, and it was otherwise untouched but also unprotected. Absolutely blew my mind as an American to whom anything older than 200 years feels ancient and rare.

Wonderful country, Perú. I highly recommend a visit to anyone who has the opportunity to go. There's so much more than Machu Picchu (although that site is a stunning must-see, ofc).

  • A picture you can hear.

I used WinXP for an embarrassingly long time.

I've since moved on to Win11 but sometimes I still miss XP. RIP.

    Blood Gulch, Halo: CE multiplayer
  • They're right that I grabbed a screen of the map from Halo 2 though, tbf! I was in a haze of nostalgia and got wreckless. 😂

  • Blood Gulch, Halo: CE multiplayer
  • Jesus, I forgot how simple it looked in CE! 2001 wasn't THAT long ago, right?

    ...right? 😅

  • Blood Gulch, Halo: CE multiplayer
  • Aww, my bad. I haven't played CE in ages, and just recognized the layout of the map.

  • Neopets!
  • Dude I was just thinking that if there was an OldNeopets (a la Runescape and 2007Scape) I would be all over that shit, possibly to my own detriment.

  • 🌟 Disenchantment 🌟 Season 5 Update from Josh Weinstein, July 8, 2023
  • There was definitely some well-founded speculation for a while that Disenchantment would get the axe because Netflix was canning so many other series, but apparently it survived! So now we get more Futurama AND more Disenchantment!

  • Neopets!
  • Making my shop and pet pages taught me HTML, no cap. Then I grew up to become a web developer.

  • Neopets!
  • Oh man, the feeling of grinding those games for weeks to save up for my first paintbrush and then FINALLY BUYING THE PAINTBRUSH... just... euphoric.

  • Neopets!
  • Oh man, I bet that was the shit. I couldn't ever get ANYTHING from that goddamn money tree!

I was all about Tiki Tombola.

  • Looking for 2-3 mods - put your best nostalgic post in the comments to qualify!
  • I'm posting here enough now (lol, twice, but I intend to keep em coming as a certified child of the aughts) that I should probably volunteer to mod, if you need another. 😁

  • Neopets!

I blame Neopets for making me confused about the spelling of colour and color as a US American child. 😅

    🌟 Disenchantment 🌟 Season 5 Update from Josh Weinstein, July 8, 2023

    Transcription:

[Screenshot of Tweet from Twitter user]

@joshstrangehill is the new season of disenchantment finished filming or is it still filming

[Reply Tweet from Josh Weinstein (@joshstrangehill)]

It was all written, filmed, etc before the strike (we had been scheduled to finish in May, just by chance, and had been in post since December) so we are done with the season. Because of the strike, we cannot promote the show though I believe we can talk about it on our personal social media when it comes out, which is up to Netflix.

    Dollz and online dollmakers
  • Dude I went down the dollz rabbithole and found out that a bunch of those dollmaker web pages still exist!

    Missy's Dollmaker

    Amara's Goth Dollmaker

    Desdemona's Dollmaker

    Blossom Dollmakers

  • Dollz and online dollmakers

I spent an absolutely absurd amount of time making clothes and accessories in MS Paint for Dollz in the 00s. Now they're like a time capsule of idealized fashion from the first part of the new millennium.

  • This is a great tip!

I've never dealt with it on my own home, fortunately, but I used to work in real estate purchase/sale/title litigation and the amount of fly-by-night "inspectors" that would plague my clients with this garbage is truly shocking. I always recommend that home buyers hire a structural engineer, a plumber, and an electrician, plus other experts on a case-by-case basis, not a home inspector (or other types of rando inspectors), for their pre-purchase due diligence. Yes, it is absolutely more expensive up front than a home inspector, but it's also WAY cheaper than buying a house with serious, possibly irreparable, structural issues that you don't find out about until 2 years after closing.

The worst, though, were the tree removal "experts." A huge number of them didn't seem to care whether the house was still standing after they removed the tree that fell on it, and I ran across more than a few that had some truly questionable billing practices, if not outright fraudulent. I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there, but boy it didn't feel like it.

Good on you, OP, for doing the right thing for you and your home! I hope you have many happy and structurally sound years in it!

  • You cant even avoid irrelevant results with "site:" anymore
  • Honest question from someone ignorant on this topic -- what do you recommend for a search engine other than Google?

  • pouting because of lack of attention
  • See if I ever teach him anything else.

Right?! I brought this mess on myself and I'll be damned if I make that mistake agai-- I should teach the cat to use his paws to open doors, that would be so cute!

  • His Christian name is Schrödinger, but we call him 🍊Orange Boy. 🍊 Nary a cell in this brain, but he's a handsome 14-year-old fellow.
  • I will relay this comment to him: he's a total ham and very much enjoys people fawning over him.

  • His Christian name is Schrödinger, but we call him 🍊Orange Boy. 🍊 Nary a cell in this brain, but he's a handsome 14-year-old fellow.
  • Oh he knows he's adorable, too. That's his whole game. Don't have to have two braincells to rub together if you're super cute. 😅

  • His Christian name is Schrödinger, but we call him 🍊Orange Boy. 🍊 Nary a cell in this brain, but he's a handsome 14-year-old fellow.

After we named him Schrödinger we quickly realized that orange cats have one braincell and there's no way this cat has object permanence, let alone understands quantum superposition.

Orange Boy's favorite activities include sleeping, napping, light napping, yelling for cat food, yelling for cat snacks, getting REAL high off the fresh catnip I grow outside, getting the munchies, then yelling for cat snacks, jealously guarding his sleeping basket from his younger brother, and napping with one leg hanging off the edge of the bed because he likes live dangerously.

Need I mention he's missing some teeth so sometimes he has a Clint Eastwood style snarl?

pouting because of lack of attention
  • Always, every time. He's the prince of this household, and the worst part is he knows it. 😅

  • pouting because of lack of attention
  • Sometimes I wish my Orange would do this. He doesn't accept a lack of attention; just fundamentally refuses it. No, no. He creates the attention he desires by yelling at me and waving his silly little ginger paw in my face (I once taught him how to high five and now that's his protocol for getting what he wants). And I'm a fucking simp for this ridiculous orange so it works and I carry him around like a baby, just like he wants.

  • Which upcoming S11 episode are you most excited about?

I know it's nearly impossible to pick a favorite Futurama episode, but if you held a ray gun to my head and I HAD to choose it would be Parasites Lost. When I saw "Parasites Regained" in the episode title list for season 11 the hype for new Futurama finally hit me!

So which episode are you most anticipating? Wild speculation about the episodes welcome.

Edited: to add a shameless plug for the Community I just created for another great Groening show, Disenchantment. If you're a fan of Bean and the gang come on over to /c/Disenchantment!
