Israel rescues four hostages in operation Palestinian officials say killed more than 200 people
  • Yes, that's true. I don't like BB, his far-right party, or his politics in limiting Israelis' freedom of speech and supporting the expansion of illegal Jewish settlements. Similarly, I despise Trump, evangelicals, and gun lobbyists in the US. However, that does not make me bosom buddies with Islamic terrorists or the pro-Islam and pro-Russia idiots on the left.

  • Israel rescues four hostages in operation Palestinian officials say killed more than 200 people
  • Palestinian Officials in Gaza = Hamas = Terrorists However, welcome to 2024! Where the new norm is to trust Hamas's propaganda. Gone are the days when groups like Al-Qaeda, ISIS, the Proud Boys, neo-Nazis, and other Islamist or far-right groups were considered pure evil. Now, we respect and accept their hatred-filled doctrines! Also, I am so glad that these 4 hostages were freed without harm and returned to their loved ones.

  • www.sportsnet.ca Canada soundly beaten by the Netherlands in Jesse Marsch's debut as Canadian coach

Jeremie Frimpong scored a goal and set up another as the Netherlands showed its class, blanking Canada 4-0 Thursday to spoil Jesse Marsch's debut as Canadian men's soccer coach.

Canada soundly beaten by the Netherlands in Jesse Marsch's debut as Canadian coach

The Netherlands defeated Canada 4-0 in a soccer friendly, with three of the goals scored in a 13-minute span during the second half. Jesse Marsch made his debut as Canada's head coach. The goals were scored by:

    • Memphis Depay (50th minute)
    • Jeremie Frimpong (57th minute)
    • Wout Weghorst (63rd minute)
    • Virgil van Dijk (83rd minute)

Canada started strong but struggled as the match progressed, with the Dutch dominating possession (61%) and outshooting Canada 20-6 (11-2 in shots on target). Alphonso Davies, making his debut as captain, played a key role but faced challenges defensively.

The Canadian lineup featured several changes from their last match and had an average age of 25. Despite the loss, Marsch emphasized that playing against top-tier teams like the Netherlands and France, whom they face next, is crucial for the team's growth and preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

Key defensive plays in the first half by Eustaquio, Johnston, and Cornelius prevented early Dutch goals, and a close shot by Larin marked Canada's best offensive effort. Canada is preparing for its Copa America campaign, while the Netherlands and France are gearing up for Euro 2024.

Israel calls on Canada to list Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as terrorist group
  • Iranian-Canadians have been asking the Liberal government of Canada to do this countless times, especially in recent years and following the shooting down of Ukrainian flight PS752 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in January 2020. So far, sadly, the government has ignored the calls. Perhaps a foreign government can put pressure on them!

  • Canada's women's soccer team falls to U.S. on penalty kicks in rain-soaked Gold Cup semifinal

Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher stopped three penalties and scored one herself to help the U.S. win a shootout after Canada rallied twice to tie it 2-2 after extra time in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup semifinals on a dramatic, soggy night in San Diego.

Lindsey Horan, Sophia Smith and Naeher scored from the spot for the second-ranked Americans. Quinn, who goes by one name, was the lone Canadian to score from the spot with Naeher denying Adriana Leon, Jordyn Huitema and Jessie Fleming.

American Korbin Albert sent her kick over the crossbar.

Canada came back twice with goals in the 82nd minute from Huitema and the 127th minute from Leon, also from the penalty spot.

Smith gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead with a 99th-minute goal. American Emily Sonnett pumped the ball forward and Rose Lavelle outjumped Canadian defenders Jade Rose and Vanessa Gilles to head it towards an unmarked Smith in the penalty box to hammer home.

Canada pressed in the dying moments and there was more late drama when Naeher took out Gilles as they both contested a high ball in the box, sending Mexican referee Katia Garcia to the pitchside monitor.

Garcia pointed to the penalty spot and Leon beat Naeher to tie it up for her sixth goal of the tournament

It had seemed like Canada's tournament would end in a 1-0 loss on a rain-drenched pitch at Snapdragon Stadium, thanks to teenager Jaedyn Shaw's 20th-minute goal.

But Huitema rescued Canada, heading home an Ashley Lawrence cross after some dogged work by Leon on the edge of the U.S. penalty box. It was Huitema's 21st goal in 78 appearance for Canada.

The Canadians kept coming and the U.S. was hanging on in second-half stoppage time.

Just moving the ball was an adventure, especially in the first half. Conditions improved as the rain subsided after halftime, which saw stadium workers use squeegees to reduce the surface water.

But the damage was done for Canada early as the 19-year-old Shaw became the first U.S. woman to score in her first four starts.

  • This is a great feature. I just enabled it, and it works just fine. However, I was a bit confused when I didn't see any backup codes generated until I realized that the SMS/Call method is, in this case, the backup method. So, while it is more convenient to use an MFA app, I'm not sure about the security if the SMS method is still an option.

Toronto Public Library still trying to determine if cardholder data was stolen in cyberattack

The Toronto Public Library it is still working to determine the full impact of a crippling cyberattack that disabled the library’s website for months, including whether the personal data of cardholders was accessed.

In the final report to the library board on the Oct. 28 cyberattack, City Librarian Vickery Bowles confirmed that the full extent of the data breach is still under investigation.

The library previously indicated that the personal information of employees, including social insurance numbers and copies of government-issued identification, was stolen during the incident. Further investigation revealed that some information involving dependents and family members of staff was also impacted.

“Although cardholder, volunteer, and donor databases were not affected, some data about these groups likely resided on the compromised file server,” the report notes.

“The larger e-discovery process to investigate whether customer, donor or volunteer data has been taken from the affected file server is underway and will take more time to complete.”

Bowles added that the library will “continue to be transparent” and will notify anyone else who may be affected.

  • Ontario’s top doctor says there is “a lot” of COVID-19 circulating in the province right now, and levels of both that virus and influenza are on the rise.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore says it looks like both viruses are set to peak over the holiday season and this is a key week for Ontarians to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu because immunization takes about 10 to 14 days to take effect.

Moore says just 13 per cent of the eligible population has received the updated Omicron-targeted COVID-19 vaccine, and only 40 per cent of people 65 and older – he says the latter figure is making him particularly anxious because the virus hits those people hardest.

Moore says the rate of people getting COVID-19 vaccinations peaked three weeks ago but he is not planning to implement any public health measures, saying he will continue with “risk communication.”

Ontario's new deal with Toronto involves the provincial government taking control of the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway, a move estimated to save Toronto $7.8 billion in road maintenance costs. Despite Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressing reluctance, the responsibility transfer means the province will manage and fund repairs, closures, and maintenance decisions for the two roads. The deal also includes a commitment not to toll the expressways, with funds saved redirected to address Toronto's priorities, such as pothole repairs, TTC improvements, and affordable housing projects. The agreement is set to be solidified through imminent legislation.

  • It depends on whom you're asking this question. I think different people have varying preferences based on their needs and circumstances:

If someone wants to access streaming content that's geographically locked, they would typically choose servers located in that specific territory. In democratic countries, the server choice often revolves around two key factors: speed and anonymity. Users may either select their home country for the fastest connection or opt for a country in the EU, which is not part of the 'Five Eyes' alliance, to prioritize anonymity.

However, the perspective changes when you ask this question from someone living in countries like Iran, China, or other dictatorships. In such places, users usually prioritize connecting to any server that offers a reliable and fast link to the free world.

Personally, I used to live in a country with an authoritarian regime, and back then, my primary concern was accessing the internet. Hence, I didn't pay much attention to factors like the 'Five Eyes' alliance. However, now that I live in Canada, I consider a broader range of metrics when choosing a VPN server.

In response to the conflict in Israel and Gaza, the City of Toronto and the Toronto Police Service are emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity, particularly around places of worship.

There has been a significant increase in hate-related calls to the Toronto police, with 14 hate crimes reported, most of which were anti-Semitic. The Toronto Police Service Board and city council strongly condemn all forms of hate. Measures, including community safety zones, are being put in place to protect places of worship and cultural centres.

Police Chief Myron Demkiw emphasizes a zero-tolerance policy for acts of violence and hate. Hate-motivated incidents have increased, with both Jewish and Muslim communities affected.

A spokesperson for the National Council of Canadian Muslims reports a significant spike in hostility towards the Muslim community. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs notes an increase in hate crimes against the Jewish community. Notably, there was an incident last week in which two teens and a man in his 20s were charged in a hate-crime investigation after threats were allegedly directed towards a Jewish high school in North York. Markham Public Library also apologized last week for temporarily removing Islamic Heritage Displays at their branches.

There's a concern about a surge in anti-Semitism in Canada due to the current unrest. The police chief will assist in creating an anti-hate information package for community organizations, including safety measures and how to report hate crimes.

Leylah Fernandez rallied from a set down to defeat Katerina Siniakova 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and win the Hong Kong Open for her first tennis title in 19 months.

It is the third title of the 21-year-old Canadian's career and first since winning at Monterrey in March 2022. After the win, she will also move back inside the top 50 in the rankings next week.

It was a nervy start by Fernandez and No. 85-ranked Siniakova earned two breaks to claim the opening set.

Fernandez, the Laval, Que. native who's ranked 60th, responded by building a 4-0 lead in the second before the Czech player took an off-court medical timeout and returned with her left upper leg taped.

The break appeared to help Siniakova as she worked her way back to 3-4 but Fernandez saved six break points in a 10-deuce game to hold and then took the set in her next service game.

After exchanging breaks through the deciding set, Fernandez made the decisive break to lead 5-4 and then held her nerve to serve out the win in two hours 49 minutes.

Demonstrations are expected on Monday in downtown Toronto as the war in the Middle East intensifies.

Police announced officers will be present at Mel Lastman Square and Nathan Phillips Square to ensure the crowds stay safe and the demonstrations are peaceful.

Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue will provide an update on the planned demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Drivers and pedestrians are advised to expect traffic delays and congestion in the city because of the large gatherings.

Israel formally declared war on Sunday and gave the green light for “significant military steps” to retaliate against Hamas for the surprise attack on Saturday.

More than 1,100 people have been killed and thousands wounded on both sides. Major airlines have suspended flights to Israel.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow issued a statement, saying she is aware of the unsanctioned rally at Nathan Phillips Square.

“The Government of Canada has rightly listed Hamas as a terrorist organization and we simply must not tolerate any support of terror, full stop,” Chow said. “The rally to support Hamas at Nathan Phillips Square today is unsanctioned, without a permit and I unequivocally denounce it.”

Palestinian militant groups have claimed to be holding over 130 people who were captured in Israel in the past two days.

“Glorifying this weekend’s indiscriminate violence, including murder and kidnapping of women and children, by Hamas against Israeli civilians is deplorable,” Chow added.

“I am receiving updates from the Chief of Police, who assures me they will investigate and address any suspected incidents of hate.”

However Verster said Metrolinx has a “much better schedule” now and will be providing updates on the project every two months going forward.

The update comes as Verster provides a detailed technical assessment of where the project stands. It was supposed to be substantially complete a year ago, but the consortium building the line missed the deadline. The project has been without a new target date for completion since.
