Avelon 1.0.6 - community groups, GIF scrubbing, app themes, filtering tools, custom app icons and much more
  • I second this one. The same functionality (swipe to hide) is also on Voyager. Once you're used to it, you'll really miss it if it's not there.

  • Also, while TARDIS is an acronym for “Time And Relative Dimension In Space”, DARTIS stands for “Dimension And Relative Time In Space”, which obviously makes perfect sense.

  • I suggest DARTIS. Let me explain.

If it wasn’t trademarked by the BBC I would definitely opt for TARDIS, the hybrid of time machine and spacecraft. I am no lawyer, so I cannot tell if this is a possibility after all.

However, it ticks so many boxes:

    • Reference to space → Fediverse
    • Reference to timeline(s) → Mastodont
    • Bigger on the inside → Lemmy
    • Tribute to a crazy fun SF series
    • Cool icon

I personally have a weakness for a reference to pop culture (e.g., like the programming language Python is a tribute to the British comedy group Monty Python).

To be safe, we might use an anagram instead: DARTIS. As a bonus we will have a nice story behind the name.

  • Option to list favorites only in feed
  • This would be an equivalent of mulireddits, and something to be solved on Lemmy level, instead of Memmy level, I think. Would be awesome, indeed! The idea is there, but not implemented (yet).

  • 3 buttons next to each other
  • I disagree. I use it all the time, whenever I switch from text heavy to image heavy community, or vice versa.

  • Suggestion: swipe to hide
  • Just tried it in my inbox with your comment, and the effect is exactly what I meant. I’m not so sure though if it is that easy to implement. Internally, I guess every post should have two flags: ‘hide’ and ‘read’. It should be possible to hide unread posts and at the same time show read posts (but also hide other read posts, if that’s what you want). This might mean an extra column in the internal database of the app, or however that works.

  • Suggestion: swipe to hide
  • I agree with configurable swipe actions, but I think that’s already in the works, if I remember correctly. My suggestion here is to make ‘hide’ one of those actions (haven’t seen that mentioned before). And yes, ‘save’ would be very nice too.

  • Suggestion: swipe to hide
  • Open a community → three dots on top right → Block Community

  • Suggestion: swipe to hide

Instead of hiding all read or voted posts, I think it would be great to have a swipe option to hide individual posts. I’m coming from Narwhal for Reddit, and for me that was a killer feature.

Some posts are that good that I don’t want to hide them after I’ve read them, but rather read them again later (or follow their discussions). Other posts I want to hide right away without even reading them. Would be awesome if this was possible.

In any case, many thanks for Memmy, it is an incredibly good app already!

    Constantly having to re-enter password
  • Did you uninstall en reinstall the app again? That did the trick for me.

  • Recommend books about chess!
  • The sexist cover alone makes this book a collector’s item: it is wrong in so many ways. Nevertheless, I gained a couple of hundred elo points by analyzing the positions that are in it. If you are relatively new to chess, studying tactics will pay off big time.

As I’m not without questions myself, where to find answers from very old people?

  • What are you reading this week? [July 3-July 9, 2023]
  • I’m reading it too at this moment. In Dutch, by the way, which is funny as there are so many references to the Netherlands. Indeed a book to dive into and forget about the here and now, though it’s not particularly a walk in the park there and then. At times it feels a tiny bit slow, but I’m enjoying it so far.
