I am looking at creating my backpacking kit. I just wanted to know what people consider their top items in their backpacking kit that might not be considered "essential" (tent, clothes, cookware, etc) or what they'd recommend looking into to improve the (already great) backpacking/camping experience.

it's a multi-usage tablet : you can cut bread, play pingpong, put your butts on it, an umbrella for sun, a mirror.... amazing what you can do with a 12 inch tablet 😁
backpacker can be also a long-term travellers who just want a backpack, hike from time to time, but have also a kind of entertainement when hostel hopping. Depends on your priority indeed
an alternative to the laptop for backpacker ?
i don't want to make advertising, but i found an affordable product for backpacker : a 12 inch tablet with a weight of 520g. When a 10 inch tablet is 400g, and a 13.3 inch laptop is nearly 1kg, a 12 inch/520g is a good screen size weight/ratio. What do you think ? (Note : no direct advertising for a product, only features and why it could be a good product for backpacker)

a good community should always have a mascot : our mascot will be this little girl with her backpack, just because a backpacker is not always a big man with beard !

I will associate hiking with mountains and nature
For me, backpacking is more general : city travelling or include electronics and more 'nomadic' way of life, not focussing only on mountains and nature.
The difference/challenge with 'travelling' is to have only a backpack when you are a long-term traveller.

my biggest mistake when choosing my backpack
we are humans, we made errors. I start a topic about what was your biggest mistake when choosing your backpack.
I beggin : i live in a town where there is only decathlon for backpack choice. My biggest error : don't understand that a backpack is like shoes : you have to try and test a lot before finding the one you are the more confortable with, whatever the weight of your gears.
